I'd forgotten that he's an android in this comic series too. I wonder if explaining him as "grown from a single cell in a lab" was considered too complicated or too ethically controversial -ie. suggesting some kind of eugenics- or if having him be flesh & blood at all at such an apparently young age (regardless of whether he was lab-created) was just deemed too unsuitable?

Clearly Zoltar's people have done their intel very well if they don't know that one of the G-Force members is an android though!

Now, if only he'd added some kind of EMF pulse to the numbing ray...

IIRC, the first Test Tube Baby was born in 1977 or so, so the idea of 'growing an embryo in a lab' wasn't completely foreign in the news.

Possible, but it is funny, I usually associate that kinds of censorship with the US (First Amendment doesn't apply to kids stuff, we must protect our young from the perverse, the radical, and the offensive). Of course, how many had already been exposed to that through Star Trek reruns or would have no clue what a clone or genetically modified person would be at that time. Now, I think kids have as much knowledge on that sort of thing as adults do. Silly censors, they try to forbid knowledge and just make it more desirable. You'd really think they'd have learned the lesson from Gensis in that Bible they love to thump.

And for having flesh and blood, many cultures use children in warfare, sometimes willingly, sometimes not. I'd rather see it portrayed like it was in Gatch or BotP with training and purpose and more fantasy than reality, than it is in real life, where they usually fulfill the role of suicide bomber or worse, just pick up a gun and start shooting soldiers are then persecuted for shooting children.

You've got that right! My kids spent a few years being addicted to the computer game Spore, so they know all about DNA and evolution and genetic manipulation... in fact, DD wants to be a geneticist wen she grows up and invent new kinds of plants!

Maybe I'm too progressive, but I believe that we cannot impose morality on scientific innovation, morality comes into play with how we use that innovation.

We condemn too many scientific possibilities because they offend moral or religious sensibilities even with practical applications that help people.

I wish your daughter luck and hope she is able to shake up the scientific community and the world.

Born in England, if I recall -and there was a lot of controversy at the time that such a thing was "immoral" and all that. I suppose it might have still seemed like a potentially touchy issue there even by the early 80s when this comic was made. But then, Gold Key made him an android too. Maybe it just seemed like a fun idea and a way to add an extra "sci-fi" element.

Amethyst, you make a good point. After all, isn't that what Gatchaman is all about? We have technology, and we can use it for good (clean energy, farming, schools, cities) or for evil (pollution, killing, world domination). I'm being serious here. The entire message of Gatchaman is that technology can be used for multiple purposes, and it is the responsibility of the person who wields to to do so responsibly.
