No, this episode was skipped for far more practical reasons. Fred Ladd knew from the beginning that G-Force was going to run 85 episodes total. After the two pilot episodes were produced from episode #'s 18 and 87, episodes selected by Turner's people, that left 83 episodes to do for the regular series run. So, Fred started at episode #1 and went forward from there, with episode #18 fitting into that run nicely. When it came down to the final few episodes, episode #81 was skipped simply because the English translation of the script was not available (By the early 1980s, Tatsunoko could only locate about 85 of their translations. They had the same problem when ADV did their dubs and asked for Tatsunoko's translations). Once they produced episode #'s 1~80, 82~85, and 87 they had completed the 85 episode run of the series and production stopped. Nothing sinister, no forethought as to whether an episode would cause problems or was similar to something that had aired earlier, just a luck of the draw on what came next in line and had a translation available when they were working their way through the run. Like I said, it was all done for practical reasons.

Greetings James...........I believe we've talked before, you used to frequent the talker which Jason and co. frequented a couple years back, right?
I've always wondered why this episode was skipped in GoS's run. Not so much for Episode #81 of Gatchaman, which I assumed was left out due to strong content (religious overtones and whatnot). I figure if anything, it would've made it over with more cuts than usual on GoS.
Speaking of the pilot episodes, you should check out my thread on the Introductions board. I've uploaded unseen early versions of the GoS pilots, which feature a music score different from even the broadcast pilots, which themselves feature a mostly exclusive music score not featured in the other 83 episodes. Are you aware of the story behind why the rest of the GoS episode order didn't carry over that music score? I talked it over with Dean Andre itself, pretty interesting stuff!

That wasn't me. I went of Veronika's Yahoo! Groups Gatchaman Club chat a few times in the late 1990s, but that was pretty much it. I wasn't part of the more popular Neptune Center talker.

The content may have come up if Fred had ever really looked at the episode, but the lack of a script made him just skip it. The G-Force crew were almost done with the series, so skipping one episode wasn't going to be a problem.

I've seen the pilots before, and have the Australian DVD sets that included them.

I'm well aware of the details behind this, though it's certainly possible (And even likely) that the specific questions you asked Dean sparked some different memories of his work on the series.

What I'm curious about is why the music score changed between the pre-production and broadcast pilot episodes. The pre-production score was definitely more varied. Even had commercial bumpers (as crude as they were) which didn't make to any broadcasted episodes. The score would've have been left on the cutting room floor regardless. According to Dean, the production schedule for "G-Force" was pretty tight (3 months or so), so he only had time to music edit the pilot episodes, when the co-producer (the late Norm Prescott, of Filmation fame) told him that he had to ramp it up. So from them on, he simply filled in the silent parts of the Gatchaman soundtrack, unfortunately with that sole backbeat.
I also read an excerpt from Fred Ladd's semi-autobiographical book from a few years ago, where he mentioned that he selected Gatch # 18 and 87 (or rather Turner chose them) as pilots because they were "amongst the hardest" (content-wise), which I'm not sure I understand, because they weren't. Perhaps the pre-production pilots were the very same ones he submitted to Turner to show what his work on the show would look/sound like, before they gave him the greenlight.
Not sure if you've heard/read the same, any other behind the scenes details you know about "G-Force"? Always curious to hear more.
