The best bike ever known

In Cricket's Bully thread, I metnioned about my Raleigh Chopper bicycle.

I thought I try and see if I could get a pic of one and I found a pic of one, but mine was red and we had to change the seat and handlebars as I didn't feel comfortable with them. Was better though than a BMX.

Wow.... Met....

When I was a kid I had a bike with really high handlebars (waist height) and I did really well riding it. Then one night without telling me my parents switched it for one of those 'adult' bikes where you perch on top and hunch over tiny handles that are lower than your bottom. I never got the hang of that bike (constantly fell off) and have have never ridden a bike since (except for one disastrous occasion better left unmentioned).

But the bike you just posted... it looks like the one I used to have... except mine had a banana seat... even the blue color... Freaky!

You had a cool bike, Metalliant. I remember the BMX craze. I never had one though -I had an old 3-speed that had previously belonged to my sister, followed by a "perch and hunch over" 10-speed that had previously belonged to my brother (can you tell I was the youngest?) To this day, I've never had a bicycle of my own; I've just inherited or borrowed other people's. The best one was a mountain bike that belonged to a grad school boyfriend, who demanded that I give it back when I broke up with him (can't really fault him there), but then I had to either walk or ride the bus to campus after that. It was a great bike -you could go over curbs, through potholes, the tires never got stuck in streetcar tracks or manhole covers...

I had a Mongoose BMX bike one time, I rode that bike so much I had it for a good four or five years but then I started wearing my tripp pants and I got tired of riding the bikes, mainly because my pants would get caught up in the bike chain very very easy lol, which is when I sold the bike for like a hundred dollars and went out and got my first pro-skateboard. After that I never rode a bike again I switched to riding skateboards, untill I moved to stroud, the only reason I quit riding then is because it is illegal to ride skateboards in town which is stupid because this town has a population of like fifteen hundred and over half of them are kids with nothing to do.

Oh man that brings back memories Met! I had the long chopper handle bars and banana seat on my bike! And I like to deck my bike out with stickers (can't remember what they were called)...but they were kind of like something you'd find in a Mad Magazine...Coffee "Choc Full of Nuts & Bolts". Funny even as a kid I loved satire comedy!

I also had sparkly handle bar tassles, and used to clothespin hockey cards in the spokes (yes those cards would have been worth a pretty penny nowadays *shudder*) so they'd make that neat clicking sound!

And no chain guard so your '70's polyester pant cuffs would get all chewed up in the gears! And no helmets, the wind in your hair...Freedom!....well until you got to the end of the block and you weren't allowed to cross the street!

Ahhh those were the days!

Because I partially sighted, I wasn't allowexd out of the cul de sac, that I was lliving on my bike, though I did sneak out for a minute or two.

Unfortuately I realised that I could have spent more time out of the Cul De Sac on my bike. Damm.

I reckon Kimiko that the bike reminds me of the Easy Rider film and wheneer I hear certain rock songs like Copperhead Road and Born To Be Wild, it kinda makes me wish I could buy another one and change the seat and handlebars again and ride everywhere this time.

I can't because I don't have a shed to put the bike and I don't realy trust to lock it up outside a shop or something in case it got nicked (stolen).

By the sounds of it, you rode a racer bike TJ, the one with the handlebars lower than the seat. Couldn't manager one of those myself.

You're not the only one TJ! Well I can ride, but only small bikes, for kids. Those are much more stable. Now I'm parcticing with my cousin's one, She's 12 old and the bike isn't reaching my waist, but I'm doing much better than on my high one!
