Listen to the Classics...

I found this website that has Audiobooks (mp3 or ogg files) of Public Domain stories (free download). Click on their catalog link for their entire catalog.

Some authors of interest include L Frank Baum (many Oz books), Arthur Conan Doyle, Howard Pyle (Robin Hood), Edgar Allan Poe, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Maurice Leblanc (Arsene Lupin), etc.

I much prefer a real book over an audiobook but it depends on the book in question. I pretend that these audiobooks are like the old radio programs and I listen to them in that fashion. Some readings are better than others (naturally).

A little secret about me is that eons ago I worked in a library, so I'm a big proponent for books, and the written word. I like the idea of audiobooks and think that they are awesome for the car (or work!), etc., but if I have a choice between an old-fashioned book and audio, I would choose the book. (I wonder if I never worked in a library if I would still think this way!)

And, btw, I was never an actual librarian - you have to have an MLS for that (Master of Library Science), so please remove all those mental images of me being an old lady with gray hair and glasses from your minds! Biglaugh1

That's cool! When i was a kid I wanted to be a librarian. I just wanted to be around the books all day!

I'm with you. I'd much rather have a hard copy to read than listen to something.

Working in a library definitely had its moments! I personally always loved when someone walked in and said, "I'm looking for a book..." Animegiggle

Libraries also have their own cast of characters. The stories I could tell about that alone! And yes, I did work with your quintessential librarian. Scary how some of them really are old gray haired ladies who do nothing but shush you all day!

I preffer a book too. I have a thing for the librarians since I need to read a lot for school and they got to know me from attending the local library so much.

I have several friends who are Librarians in Georgia. I met them through one of the writer's groups I used to belong to way back in the day. Nice guys both of them.

I thought of another use for this site - play the children stories to the kids at bed time. Wink <just kidding>

I'm enjoying the Howard Pyle "Merry Adventures of Robin Hood". I plan on putting several of these audiobooks on my mp3 player so I can listen to them while commuting on the bus/subway.

I have a diploma in Library Technology. So I could work in a library. While completing my Lib. Tech programme I had a month long practise session in a school library. That is when I decided to become a Teacher Librarian, and the only way I could do that, here in Ontario, was by becoming a teacher first.

I went on and completed a Certificate of Education and have not left the classroom since. I really enjoy working with the kids. Although, on really bad days I do wonder why I don't go work in the school library, and then I can give those horrid children back to thier teacher after a period with me. Smile

I've thought about going back to school and getting my MLS (or MLIS), but once I start thinking about the tests and papers...ugh! I just don't think I have it in me anymore.

I give tons of credit to anyone who goes back for their Masters or PhD after taking time off!

I depends of your free time and motivation Hino. I'm in my terminal year and I know the pain of test papers and exams! Still if you like the object and if it holds the promise of a good job, it will worth the effort!

The one thing I like about librarianship is that you can go just about anywhere in the country (maybe internationally too??), especially if you would like to work in an academic library. But I'm not so sure I want to work in a library full-time again. Maybe a nice little part-time job in a public library. That sounds good... That way I can get my book fix but not have to deal with all the other zaniness! Looney

(I should probably mention that I've worked in both public and academic libraries, with my last job being in an academic. The public was nice and that was where I worked with the old gray haired lady who sushed you all day. The academic is where I met all the looney's. Don't get me wrong when I say all this. I enjoyed both those jobs very much!)
