It was probably one of the quarks of the BoTP pilot, like Jason's voice - which I actually still prefer.

Hi all,

They sure are! The Yoshida brothers were heavily influenced by comics they got from American soldiers as kids. Gatchaman got much its sense of style and adventure from those comics - the team was definitely conceived with the typical costumed super hero in mind.

I still enjoy super heroes to a degree. As a kid I absolutely loved them. You’ll forgive me if I borrow a little from my introduction to Age of TV Heroes… But I was born at the right time to enjoy that 1970s super hero boom. Adventures of Superman and Batman were already on TV daily. I got into comics because of them, then I found the Mego World’s Greatest Super-Hero dolls. Wow! But then Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and Doctor Strange all hit the small screen in a compact time frame. It was all just right to grab me and hook me for years (and yeah, Battle was in there too!). If all that wasn’t enough, I was one of a fortunate number able to see a live-action super hero water ski show at Sea World Ohio that featured an absolute ton of DC characters. All of that in the space of 1975 - 1980 or so. It was an overload that was just too much on a young kid… I couldn’t resist!

I think the earliest thing that I really remember catching me were the colors. Batman in particular was so colorful and fun. It was great on TV, but I also remember staring at the colors in my Batman ViewMaster reels for hours because they were just SO vivid. I tried to get my crayons to match them but they just weren’t the same. Color alone may seem like a superficial way to start enjoying TV shows and super heroes, but it had to start somewhere and that’s what happened with me.

My friends and I certainly didn’t analyze why we liked all this stuff then, but it was an absolute blast to meet up and talk about the latest TV episodes, trade the newest comics around, play with our Mego dolls or tear up the neighborhood playing G-Force, Batman, Superman and more. I’m sure that time spent enjoying super heroes with my friends was what left the biggest positive impression about them with me. Because of that time I continued enjoying hero adventures for decades after.

I had an extended break from most things super hero related from the early 90s until recently when the first Spider-Man movie rekindled my interest (he was always my favorite) - so much so that my friend and co-writer were inspired to write about our own very similar childhood hero memories.

Now I follow them through the big films. I felt well enough to go catch the Captain America - Civil War movie this week (and really enjoyed it, Cap was my second favorite hero after Spider-Man). I don’t follow all the adventures nearly as closely as I did as a kid, but I still find things to enjoy in many of the new projects. We’re squarely in the middle of another major super hero boom now with so many books, feature films, series on network TV, cable and streaming services. It doesn’t appear to be slowing down at the moment, so there must be something in them that a lot of people love. For me, it was the time spent with friends. I’m sure the next generation will have plenty to cover when they look back on this time in their childhoods.

Jason, I, too collected comics starting in the late 70s and watched the hero cartoons. I enjoyed the Spiderman cartoons in particular - they gave him such a sense of humor that I loved seeing in Capn America Civil War. I think the modern movies have finally recaptured the old Spiderman.

I also loved the Legion of Super-Heroes. The idea of a large number of teens working together (for the most part) to protect the galaxy fed my imagination. My favorite was Mon-El, until they killed him off, brought him back, so and so forth. And Timber Wolf, the ultimate moody self-destructive guy.
