I'm not one for big eloquent anything. I'll save that for folks with a greater gift than I possess. I'll be thinking on this today and will probably try to add something later in the day.
Yes, I agree. Hard to believe how much the world has changed in those 5 years.
I'm in the office this morning and 5 of us were standing by our receptionists desk. Out of the 5, 4 of us are wearing black. I made mention of it and and a co-worker said it's such a somber day. Another abrasive co-worker said 'yeah, the Packer's lost!' I quickly shut him down when I threw him the stink eye. Totally classless, even if he thought he was beign funny. I guess I'm just in a foul mood. While driving in this morning, many businesses had their flags at half-mast. The flag at our building was flying high. Pissed me off.
I watched CNN.com streaming video of Sept 11th 2001 as it happened in real time at my desk. Interesting to see that as I was at work when it happened in 2001, so I could not see the events unfold. I mostly listened to the radio that morning.
Being seeing everything 'real time' was numbing all over again. Seeing all the images and hearing the confusion brought it all back. I felt like I needed to relive it again though.
The people who helped out at Ground Zero that day, and in the months after, are now suffering health problems from all the toxins they inhaled. Cancer and emphysema among others.
I'm adding them to my prayers for the day. It's not right that people who tried to help get penalized.

There was a fireman who was on GMTV, a telly programme on in the morning, who was there at Ground Zero on his day off but volunteered antyway. He said that people like him did get cancer and such but the government like all governments haven't done much in help.
Apparently earlier on the ITN news, I heard that there is a group of some sort that has famlies of the of the people who died in that tragedy. I only heard the last miute or so, so not too sure what kind of group this is.
I knew that from the beginning of the 21st Century that the world will go to pieces and is sad that things are looking worse. Also during the TV news story that I just caught the end of, I heard that 91 countries lost people in 9/11. NINETY ONE.
If there is a god, then he's not doing a good job protecting, teaching and helping us.
Lets hope that nothing like that can happen again.

If there is a God, maybe he's had enough of the idealogical differences in religions that are all basically supposed to believe in the same god, and he's just leaving us to get on with it.
Horrible events. While there have been plenty of other terrorist attacks worldwide before and since and almost every day still in some countries, may they never repeat on the scale of 9/11.

I had to explain what happened on 9/11 to my class today...unreal...it's just history to them. They were only 2 or 3 years old when it happened, so most of them don't remember.
I had a class meeting on my reading rug, and explained and showed a few (edited) pictures to them. They were very curious and some were very emotional. We also had a Memorial ceremony outside this morning with the entire school. It was very moving.
God bless the families who lost loved ones there.

I find it strange that if free will is a gift from whateveer God from at least 3 different religons which are so close and similar to each other (not mentioning their names), that people from those religons have and are killing people from the other 2 religons.
Most of this violence has nothing to do with religon at all, but with the culture of the regions.
Thank goodness (I nearly said Thank god) that I am an atheist.

Remember each of those 3 main religions is split into sub-sects. I don't know about judaism, but both islam and christianity have sects that have warred and killed each other on the basis of their sect differences. Who knows whether the religious differences are an excuse to wind people up for a war that's really over territory, or water?
I don't generally go with conspiracy theories. Same as I don't go with the reasoning that says people never went to the moon. If you know enough about certain aspects of conspriacy theories (ie the bits they don't mention) then you can see through them.

My general stance on religion as a controlling device is that if you use it as a tool more to control others and less as a tool to control yourself, then you are doing it wrong.
As for conspiracy theories, I agree with Meridian. The key is to take the time to educate yourself. Primarily with the topic at hand, but educating yourself on human sociology in general is always helpful in seeing through the bs.
On the topic of those who helped at Ground Zero and are now suffereing health problems, I think blaming the government is a bit too passive an approach if that is what they are doing and nothing else. However, if they are working towards setting up funds and such and generally taking a hands on approach to improving their situation for themselves and others, then they are better off. I'm probably not wording this properly. I think it all boils down to the fact that I feel it isn't the government's job to micromanage our well being. I'm probably going to be reamed for this, but it's basically how I feel.

This is my feeling towards religion as well.

As I said, I only caught a bit of the documentary. Enough to let me know that watching more of it would, rather than help me help others, totally ruin my mood and that of my family for the rest of the day. Reflection is good if it helps you improve, but that day was not the right one for it.
They were working on a class action suit. Which I'm not sure is the effective thing. As I learned it, torts are for when the injury could or should have been predicted by the defendant, and could have been prevented through reasonable measures. Which opens the questions of "how could they have prevented the attacks" and "should they have kept the helpers back".
Then again, suing may be the easiest way to get money out of the government.
I'd like to see a fund set up for all people who get injured while helping others. Supported by both government and donations.

Pardon me while I rant, having been reading up on this very topic reciently: Class action suits are a load of crap. The lawyers get most of the money, the clients typically get a token payment, time and money is wasted on years of litigation, and who are they sueing anyway? Where does the govt. money come from? Us. What kind of logic makes it a good idea to sue ourselves out of our own money so that we can give our money to the lawyers who pushed for the suit in the first place? Granted, my rant is a general statement of class action lawsuits, as I haven't looked into the details of the Firefighters suit, but the principle still stands.
Setting up a fund is much more logical. At least the money will go where it is needed.
