Oh, why am I not surprised that these backward-thinking close-minded people are at it again. These are the same waste-of-skin idiots that give both Christiians and Midwesterns in this country a bad name.

Unfortunately, they aren't the only ones, just the loudest. Please believe me that we, meaning both Christians and Midwesterners, are not all like these people.

If these people lived by the Book they quote out of context as fervently as they spout their retoric, then the world could be an amazing place with people helping each other and showing kindness to all.

Instead, we get these idiots with their small minds who want to make a lot of noise and get lots of looks. Yes, they are certainly in for a rude awakening when they get to the afterlife, in case they've forgot, "Judge not, lest ye be judged". That one will definitely jump up and bite them in the tinder parts.

My suggestion to anyone who runse into them: smile, wake, tell them to have a nice day and enjoy their visit to California.

Just my two cents.

PS. Wonder if they'll be here to protest GenCon next month.

What really amuses me about religious "fundamentalists" - no matter what their religion - is that they all protest the same things and have the same prejudices!

It all boils down to they want conformity - with themselves in charge, and no forms of progress at all.

Which is why I have made sure that the last couple of churchs I attended accepted me as the fanfic writer and the fangirl I am. When I felt that attitude changing at the last church I was at, not the one I'm going to now, was when I left.

I didn't appreciate my daughter being told she would go to hell for reading, and enjoying Twilight and other books about vampires. I tried to have a conversation with the youth minister about it, but all he wanted to see was a kid not conforming. I'm many things, but a conformist is not one of them. Smile

The entire 'congregation' is Fred Phelps's relatives and the twits who married them.

Methinks the reverend enjoys the attention he gets, and the feeling of power he has over his followers. They feel besieged and oppressed, which makes them feel righteous.

And you know a man is an obnoxious jerk when military veterans on motorcycles show up to ensure he and his pack of losers don't disrupt funerals. I don't think those bikers are wearing 'Have a Nice Day' buttons and giving out friendly hugs.

(Death Note is on Hulu as I type this. Yes, that was deliberate.)

Whats scary is that people sometimes think that all Christians are like them...and think like them....shivers up my spine... you will never see me holding a sign with words printed on it like "God hates you". (I feel sorry for them, they should try reading the bible sometimes.)

Controlling people- Thats all they are, with no compassion that has nothing to do with being a Christian.

I bet there are a lot of Christians attending the comic-con this year who just enjoy their comic books/characters and wanna have fun...

We had Rev Fred Nile...(Extreme church pastor, dunno where he is now.) the gay community of Sydney now thanks him for his protests against them because it gave the mardigras so much media attention its now an annual event that brings in millions of dollars! Way to go Fred! LOL!

Garnet- My church has single parents and anyone can come... a few bikies. I'm not religious, I have a faith though, I see religion and faith as two different things...(not going into stuff like that here, thats enough information from me.)

Most of the women loved the Twilight series! (I'm yet to see the second movie,) And Harry Potter, its up to the person what they read and take on board I feel.... you sound a lot like us.

As far as I can tell, these kind of religious people never read more than a few pages of the Bible.

I've read the Bible (New World Translation and New International Version) through at least four times in the past 7-8 years. Every word. I also have a King James Version. And what the Bible preaches is kindness. Yes, people are persuaded to join Christ and told what rules need to followed. But if they say, "No," give a big sigh, ask if they wouldn't mind talking again somewhere down the line, and politely leave. No screaming, no sign-waving, no forcing to conform, no violence. Just gentle persuasion and accepting if it doesn't work.

And from the Spanish Inquisition to people like this, so many get the wrong idea of Christianity. It's very sad.

I have a friend who is gay and brought up by very Catholic parents. The type that live their religion.

He debated for years before coming out to them. Not knowing how they would react when they had reacted so badly to friend's children who had done the same.

Needless to say, they were fine about it....

I remember a conversation I had with his mother only hours after he sat them down. I asked how she could be so supportive and understanding - didn't it go against her religion?

Her answer gave me faith.

"Religion is superstition at it's core, a bunch of people getting together to share their love of their faith, their interpretation of their faith, and to learn more about their faith - nothing more... I know my son. He is as God made him - kind, strong, smart, beautiful in every way. God would be proud of his creation as I am proud of my son. I have learned more about my faith today than I thought possible. Faith is important, religion is not. Not when it corrupts your belief in God's heart and my heart had been corrupted by the teachings of men who have lost sight of what God intended."

They are still very involved in their church, moving an hour out of the city to become caretakers at a smaller chapter. And they are still very strong in their faith and proud of their son. He has not been kept a secret from the rest of the congretation (sp?) and his partner is as well known as he is.

This friend of yours knows well what she's saying, Green, and I cannot agree more with her, especially with this particular quotation. She literally speaks my mind, as that's how I feel about religion! IMHO, so many teachings have been remoulded and distorted by the human being ... I guess even God isn't that happy with how things are being interpreted!

Our island is mostly Catholic and we do also have extremists. What I dislike most is that some of these people dictate what is right and what is wrong, but then they're the first to backstab you! You find people who attend mass every single day and the first thing they do after the ceremony is speaking behind the back of others the very moment they exit to the church's courtyard. I have a couple of friends who are members of the "Community" ... they're good friends, but I so feel uncomfortable in their company as I don't know how to speak to them, or how to react in front of them, because I feel that they're scrutinising ever single action and word of mine! But, then, they're the ones who do not think twice to speak prejudice or to treat you as you're in the wrong when, indeed, they could be!

At the end, everyone knows what's good and what's bad ... these are the fundamentals of every religion and, deep inside, everyone feels and is aware of their significance, even when not following any religion! It's the way you think about things and do them that makes the difference!

It's interesting and scary how words can be twisted from any religious book to suite the means and end of those preaching and even scarier are those who blindly beleive those words and run with it and demand that others beleive blindly that they are saying the right thing and that others are wrong.

Such horrible things have been done in the name of religion and are still being done (some people are slow to learn from history)
protesting a funeral (that is just plain WRONG and disrespectful on so many levels, a con that's just silly, Mardigras - it's been proven peoples sexuality is determined before birth, go for it I'd love to have that much moxi to express myself, me I enjoy from the side lines.)

The pope and his views on ordaining women comes to mind and the reference to pedafelia (hello pope have you had a good look at what some priest have been accused of lately), you can't stay in the dark ages forever the world is changing and religion, while keeping it FUNDAMENTAL truths need to adapt to the changing times.

and on that...
God/Deity of choosing - gave us the power of choice a very important thing,
and
He/She is the final judge.. not anyone else

some people...well I have a fair Idear were they will be going when they die...eveyone in the end is accountable for their actions
