Hi all!
quote: | Near as those of us "Ole' Timers" in Bird Scramble have been able to determine (thanks in large part to St. James) - the Gatchaman timeline is roughly "real time" as the majority of the episodes are "one week" apart. If I recall correctly, this is because the planning notes (particularly for the key episodes - 1, 52, 103ish, Gatch II ep 1, Gatch Fighter ep 1) referenced approximate ages. |

Yes, the events of the three series happened in roughly real-time. We know this from a few time-related references in the series, such as episode #44 taking place 10 months after Katse became the leader of Gallactor, and airing 10 months after the start of the series. In episode #99, Katse says that it had been 1 year, 10 months since they began their attempt at world conquest, and aired 1 year and 10 months after the series began.
The time period between the first and second series is a little trickier, as Gatchaman II has no time references regarding this. The earliest known Planning Establishment for Gatchaman II states that it was been 2 years since the first series ended, though the final version of the Planning Establishment states only that it has been "several years" since the first series ended.
The only on-air reference to the passage of time between the two series came in episode #10 of the Gatchaman radio drama, which again stated the elapsed time as being 2 years. Because of this, it is generally accepted by fans on both sides of the Pacific that 2 years passed between the series.
In Gatchaman II, we know that the series took place ove rthe course of 1 year because episode #50 references the 1 year anniversary of sinking of the cruise ship from episode #1, which aired 51 weeks earlier (There was a rerun of episode #28 between episode #46 and 47, hence the 51 weeks instead of 50. This was the only time during the run of all three Gatchaman series that a rerun was aired).
Gatchaman Fighter doesn't have time references that I'm aware of, but it's fairly safe to assume that the pattern from the previous two series would have remained intact in the thirs series.
I hope this helps!
James
