Gatchaman Episode 55 – The Daring Mini-Submarine

Fish swim peacefully in the water, amongst streams of bubbles and cheerful flute music. Not to mention the many modern structures on the bottom of the ocean. The narrator tells us that the ISO has been very successful at protecting the natural resources of all of the Earth’s oceans. Hmmm… even the ones ravaged by the natural disasters of the V2 Plan?
And I am right to be doubtful. For now we see pollution on the water’s surface, and dead fish rising to the top.

Somehow, this beautiful scene has instantly been turned into one of death! Now we are faced with visions of dead coral and fish skeletons covered in filth on the bottom of the sea. Dead fish wash ashore, and the birds that eat them die as well.
Amazingly: kept for BOTP:

And cut from BOTP:

Interestingly, the flesh seems to be literally dissolving on these birds and fish.
The ocean waters are now brown, and it is clear that everything is dying. And after this scene of gruesomeness, we cut to…. triumphant brass instruments heralding the Fish Parade at the Crescent Base!
Upon hearing the news of the pollution, the ISO immediately begins searching for a cause, and a possible solution.

Dr. Nambu is chosen to lead the investigation. To signify his leadership, he holds up a beaker on a stand. It is his scientific flag.

Okay, I don’t know why he’s holding up the beaker and stand, but it sure looks weird!
“This is liquid cellulose PCB.†Nambu briefs the Science Ninja Team. “However, it contains a new pollutant.â€
“You mean, a man-made toxin, Doctor?†Ken asks.

“Yes. It was intentionally created to ruin the oceans.†Nambu replies.
“Galactor must be behind this!†Jun declares. Boy, she’s learned something these past 54 episodes, hasn’t she?

But apparently Jun has brought up something Nambu hasn’t considered, because he says ‘Hmmm….’ thoughtfully and strokes his chin.
Everyone stares at the pollutant.

“Is there any effective way that this new pollutant could be cleaned up, Doctor?†Jun asks.
“It’d take years to decontaminate.†Nambu answers. “I know that Galactor will stop at nothing to conquer the Earth, but this attempt is more horrible than I’d ever expected!â€
Even as Nambu says this, a familiar laugh comes from a communications screen on the wall. Jun is so surprised that her nose disappears!

It’s Katse, disguised as Santa Claus!

“Dr. Nambu, Gatchaman…†Katse-Claus greets them. “Is this thing on? Let me see if I can make our intentions clear to you!â€
Ken tightens his fist in a very Condor-esque manner.

“As scientists, you must realize that 70.8% of the Earth’s surface is water!†Katse says, as everyone stares in disbelief. I guess they didn’t know this scientific fact.

“So far, we’ve only released radioactive cellulose into about, ooh… 0.01%.†Katse goes on. “Just watch, Bird People! If you don’t meet our demands within the next 24 hours, we’ll begin polluting another large body of water, only this time, we’re going to make it 0.1%!â€
“I’ll never let you get away with that, you monster!†Ken shouts.

Now I’m confused. Can Katse actually hear him? And if so, does that mean that Katse can see Ken and his civilian identity has been revealed? Oh, the humanity!
But perhaps Katse can’t hear, because he goes on speaking as if Ken never said anything.
“Listen up! Here’s the deal. Doc Nambu, Gatchaman, and the Ninja Kids will all surrender to Galactor!â€
I was wondering if this means that Katse has figured out that the Science Ninja Team are ‘kids’, but according to the subs, he just wants the ‘Ninja Team’. I’m guessing this is just Edwin Neal having some fun with the dialogue. He’s certainly doing a good job in this scene! I’m !
Clearly the Team isn’t too thrilled with the idea of surrendering.

“I’d like to snap off his ears!†Ryu mutters, but his lips don’t move. Turns out in the subs he doesn’t say anything at all. I guess ADV wanted Ryu to have some input into this discussion.
“Ooh, why the long faces?†Katse asks, making me wonder if he can see them again. Or is he just a good guesser?
“Just think, you’ll be giving your lives to save everyone on Earth, and we’re giving you all the chance!†Katse tells them. “You know, you really should all be grateful!â€
“Damn you, Katse, you coward!†Joe snarls.

“Now don’t forget, you only have 24 hours.†Katse says. “Give us a ring on Frequency 007AR21 any old time and I promise I’ll pick up. Adieu, Science Ninja Team! Call me!â€

And I am still at the voice acting here! I am actually expecting Katse to put out his pinky and thumb and do the ‘call me’ hand motion!
Ken’s clenching his other fist now.
Everyone is standing in stunned silence.

“I’m afraid we have no choice if our lives will save the Earth.†Nambu says, a bead of sweat falling down his face.
“No, Dr. Nambu, we just can’t!†Jun exclaims. “If we surrender to Galactor, then they’ll finally be able to conquer the Earth!â€

Jun makes a good point here. If they surrender, they’ll save oceans from being contaminated (presuming Galactor doesn’t go back on its dubious word) but the world will be lost anyway under Galactor’s rule.
“You know, she’s right!†Ken agrees with me. “You’ve got to give us the orders to move out, Doctor! Please, Sir!â€

Everyone waits anxiously for Nambu’s decision.

“This is going to be very difficult, Ken.†Nambu says.
“Maybe so, but I won’t let Katse get away with this!†Ken vows. “Now let’s go launch the God Phoenix!â€

“Big ten, Ken!†says everyone else in unison

And yes, that’s an ADV tribute to BOTP. The subtitle says ‘Roger!’.
Insert stock footage of the God Phoenix leaving the Crescent Base, to the sound of victorious trumpets.
So where are they going in the God Phoenix? Well, they’re now surveying the oceans. Which one? Well, let’s pick any old ocean. The Earth is only 70.8% covered in water, you know.

“Jun, go ahead and tune in to Frequency 007AR21, and make the call to Berg Katse.†Ken orders. Whenever anyone says ‘007’ in this episode, I’m thinking of James Bond. But this isn’t the James Bond episode. That’s coming up later…

“Ken, do you mean…?†Joe is horrified.

“The Science Ninja Team is going to surrender to Galactor.†Ken says calmly. Now that’s a great soundbite!
“Ken!†shouts Jun in distress, but Gatchaman remains firm in his decision.

“I get it!†Joe smiles, snapping his fingers. “You plan on surrendering, and then taking Katse by surprise, right?â€

“I get the picture!†Ryu grins. “So then we’re only going to pretend to surrender to Katse!â€

Ken neither confirms nor denies their suspicions, but simply tells Jun to ‘hurry up and make that call’.
“You got it, Ken!†she says, waving at him.

So the Science Ninja Team calls, and Katse-Claus appears on a communications monitor. Jinpei is appropriately horrified.

Ken holds up a CB mic and speaks into it. Gotta love this high tech stuff!

“This is Gatchaman to Berg Katse. Gatchaman to Berg Katse. The Science Ninja Team has chosen to surrender immediately as you’ve ordered.â€
“Bravo, Gatchaman!†Katse is practically purring. More kudos to Edwin Neal here.

“You should bear in mind that the only reason we’re doing this is to save the people of the Earth.†Ken adds.
“I order you then to make way to the Tarushia Sea.†Katse instructs them.
“Terrorist!†Joe shouts. “We’re going to make you pay for this dearly later!â€

“Shhhht!†Ken hisses, covering the CB mic. “Calm down, Joe, and take a good look at Katse’s surroundings. It may come in handy later on.â€
“Ahhhh….†Joe grumbles. “Well, it looks like he’s in the control room of a submarine to me.â€

“How very satisfying,†Katse says, apparently unaware of this part of the conversation, “to have the Science Ninja Team following my orders like feathery little slaves! Now’s my chance to pay you all back for the shame and trouble you’ve caused me!†His image fades out.

No one is very happy with this situation.

“Just you wait, Berg Katse!†Ken promises grimly. “I’ll bring you down no matter what!â€

Flying over the Tarushia Sea, the God Phoenix follows a trio of ships. Jinpei appears to be bored.

“Nothing looks out of the ordinary.†notes Joe. “What do you think, Jinpei?â€
But before the Swallow can answer, Katse-Claus is back.
“So glad you could make it!†Katse greets them.
“So where are we supposed to go?†Ken asks. “Give us your co-ordinates.â€

“Dive toward the ocean floor from your current location.†Katse instructs them. “Wait for me there, and I’ll come welcome you myself! After all, you are my invited guests!†He fades out.
Interesting that Katse hasn’t mentioned the fact that Nambu isn’t surrendering as well. Wasn’t that part of the original demand?
But Jun is still too horrified at the thought of surrender to notice this.

“Ryu, go ahead and dive, just like he said.†Ken orders.

So Ryu does, and as the God Phoenix moves through the water, we get the ‘dramatic tension’ music. The area is clean and peaceful, with plants and fish.
“Why do I feel like we’re on an execution platform?†Ryu asks.
“Come on, hurry up, Katse!†Ken urges. Exactly why Ken wants Katse to hurry is unknown.
“Damn, he’s irritating!†Joe adds.
“There’s something coming through on the sonar!†Jun reports. “A submarine is approaching us.â€

And sure enough, a rocket-looking sub moves through the water.

And the Science Ninja Team waits.

“At the end of your little rope, eh?†Katse-Claus asks, as he appears on the communications screen again. “You would give your lives for the hope of world peace! I never heard of a thing so preposterous, you morons! You’re all going to die, just like that fool, Red Impulse. The greatness of Galactor will finally lord over the Earth! Your time has expired! Your destiny is right here!†Katse laughs and fades out.
And the rocket sub continues to approach. Could it be… dun, dun dun…. a missile?
The rocket sub parks itself above the God Phoenix’s position. Jun reports this fact to Ken.

“This is our chance!†Joe says.
“Right! Launch a Bird Missile at it!†Ken orders.

“Right on!†smirks Joe, only too eager to comply. He presses his favorite red button and the rocket sub explodes.
Unfortunately, it releases the radioactive cellulose. Fish instantly die, and suddenly the Science Ninja Team is staring at a polluted landscape!

“I was just testing the sincerity of your apparent surrender.†Katse-Claus laughs, appearing on the screen again. “The sub you attacked was unmanned, and designed to pollute! Now that you’ve broken your promise, I’m going to pollute the entire Tarushia Sea! Thousands will die as a result of your meddling!â€
“Aw, damn it!†Joe swears. “So this was a trap?â€

Katse’s laughter echoes throughout the Bridge of the God Phoenix, as the Team appears despondent.
The remains of the sub continue to emit pollution, and everything dies. The water turns brown and yucky-looking. The God Phoenix leaves the scene, and returns to flying over the three ships on the ocean’s surface. The Science Ninja Team doesn’t seem to be in very good shape.

“If we don’t stop Galactor from polluting the oceans, our beautiful Earth will be ruined!†says Jun, her eyes brimming with tears.

More Galactor subs spread pollution in the Sea, even as the God Phoenix flies overhead. A shark dies as the flesh melts from its bones. Katse-Claus appears back on the communications screen.
“Once again, I demand the lives of Gatchaman, Nambu, etc., etc.†Katse demands. “If you do not surrender this time, Galactor will continue to pollute all of the oceans of the world to the last drop! You’ve only got 10 hours left to decide, Gatchaman!â€
And on that dramatic note, we head off to a commercial break.
Solid Gold Ken isn’t dancing his way out of this one. We return to find everyone still despondent. So much so that Joe’s belt buckle has reversed colors!

“Isn’t there anything we can do but just sit here and wait?†Joe asks angrily. “There’s gotta be a way out of this, Ken!†Amazingly, this has caused his belt buckle to turn back to its usual colors.
“Hey, you’re right!†Ken exclaims, standing up.

“There has to be a Galactor mothership or base nearby that’s controlling these unmanned submarines via remote control!†Ken says.

“I was just thinking that those tankers look kind of suspicious.†Ryu notes. And sure enough, those three ships are still on the viewscreen.
Everyone contemplates this idea.

“That’s it!†Ken decides. “Let’s use the mini-sub to check out the bottom of the sea!†Um, what about Ryu’s idea? I think it was pretty good, myself. But what do I know?
The God Phoenix flies low over the water’s surface, and the nose of the ship opens up. Underneath the G-2 is an orange mini-sub. Where did this thing come from? Has it always been there, or is it new? Seeing as we never see it again after this episode, I’m going to suggest that it was put there for this mission only, because either Dr. Nambu or Ken had a lot of foresight.

The G-2 suddenly disappears, and the mini-sub is dropped into the water.

The mini-sub moves through the polluted ocean, with fish dying all around it. And who’s in control?
Why, it’s Ken, of course!

He’s following the pollution subs.
“I’m not going to let Galactor destroy this beautiful sea with pollution!†Ken exclaims.

The subs return to a larger ship. It’s one of the three tankers we saw on the ocean’s surface!
“I see, just as I thought.†Ken says. “That mammoth tanker is the mothership after all!†Uh, actually, it was Ryu’s idea. Let’s give credit where credit is due, Ken.
At that moment, Ken is shocked to see the pollution spraying inside of his mini-sub!

“Damn it!†he mutters, even as he tries not to breathe the toxic air.

Ken is coughing and choking.

He thinks to himself that he’s got to get inside the mothership, to avoid the pollution. And of course, he manages to sneak the sub in as the mothership’s doors are closing.
Onboard the tanker, goons are manning the controls.

“The unmanned submarine has returned. Begin the cleaning process!†says one goon.
The rocket subs are sent into a chamber where something is sprayed on them. The substance appears to be cleaning off the pollution on the ships.
“Hey, look! What’s that?†asks an observant goon. Here is what he sees on his monitor in the cleaning chamber.

“That’s strange… why are there two of them?†he asks, as his comrades come rushing to look.

The door opens, and cleaning fluid sprays out into the control room.

Everyone coughs and chokes, as Ken emerges in the doorway!

“It’s Gatchaman!†shouts a goon, raising his gun.

So Ken kicks him.

He punches another goon.

He chops a third, and slices one with his boomerang. Ken has taken over the control room!
Meanwhile, somewhere else on the tanker Katse is acting smug.

“Those idiots!†he smirks. “If they’re not going to surrender, then we’ll just attack them!†He’s looking at the God Phoenix on his monitor. Of course, if he’s observing the God Phoenix, shouldn’t he have seen the mini-sub lowered into the water? Ah well, maybe he was taking a bathroom break at the time.
“Battlestations!†Katse shouts. “Execute the God Phoenix with our Disintegration Plan now!â€
Suddenly the ‘exciting encounter’ music is playing, and the tankers move into a new formation. It’s so thrilling that Ken has joined everyone back on the God Phoenix!

Yep, they inserted the stock footage from earlier in the episode, even though Ken’s not there now. Oops…
“Hey! Why are those three tankers lining up?†Jinpei asks. “What do you think they could be up to?â€

No one answers.

Notice how Jun and Joe are at the front of the God Phoenix.
The three tankers join up to transform into a mecha.

I have to say, this is one super cool transformation! I especially like the devil head logo smokestack. Nice touch.
“Man, what is that?†Jinpei asks, apparently unconcerned about the big gun the mecha is aiming at them.
“Why don’t we get a little closer and check it out?†Ryu suggests casually. He’s not too surprised, probably because he was suspicious of the tankers all along.

“That’s it… come on down…†Katse laughs eagerly. “A little closer. Come on, come on!â€

“Just a little more…†Katse urges.

Apparently, this weapon (whatever it is) has a very short range.
“They’re in shooting range! Blast them!†Katse orders.

Yellow laser beams come out of the ship’s guns and hit the God Phoenix.

The yellow lasers seem to be some kind of tractor beams, pulling in the God Phoenix.
On the Bridge, everyone is playing musical chairs again. Now Jinpei’s up front while Joe and Jun are in back. But none of them seem to be too happy about this attack.
“They’ve got us, and they’re pulling us down!†Joe exclaims.

“It’s some kind of magnetic force!†Ryu says.
“Fire to the retros! Come on!†Joe shouts. I guess he had to come up front to do that.

The God Phoenix fires its engines, fighting back with the tractor beam.
“Where the hell is Ken?†Joe wonders.

Stress fractures appear on the God Phoenix.
“The Magneto Beams are of equal power.†Katse says, in his own command center. Of course, no one on the mecha is listening, but it’s a nice way to let the viewers know what’s going on. “They grasp their common target with perfect balance! Any object will eventually reach its limit and tear apart! Of course, the God Phoenix is no exception.†Katse cackles with his assumed victory.
Onboard the God Phoenix, no one looks very confident.

“It’s almost there!†Katse says gleefully. “Maximum power!†And the goons do his bidding. I guess they’re listening now.
“I’ll finally annihilate the Science Ninja Team!†Katse says. “Once and for all!â€

“Don’t be so sure, Berg Katse!†comes Ken’s voice. The Galactor Leader turns around in surprise.

“No, Gatchaman!†Katse cries.

“You’re the one who’s going to be destroyed!†Ken threatens. “Don’t underestimate the Science Ninja Team! Prepare to die, monster!â€

“Don’t be so sure, Eagle Boy!†Katse counters. “Look! The God Phoenix will soon meet the same fate as Red Impulse!â€
But them’s fighting words for Ken.

He approaches Berg Katse.

A goon starts shooting, but that doesn’t bother the White Shadow.

The fire from the falling gun takes out the other two goons in the room. Ken leaps over to the control panel and turns off the weapon. Katse is horrified!

The God Phoenix shoots away, and Joe falls to the floor.

Even Ryu flies up and out of his seat!

When will these people learn to put on their seatbelts?
Katse steps on a button in the floor, and a ramp is created. Katse sits and slides down the ramp.

Whoo hoo! Is this a prototype ride for the Galactor-Land Amusement Park? I can see it now, right next to the Mamothoon Ferris Wheel, the Child-Kidnapping House of Mirrors, and the Creepy Flute-Player Show.
“He’s getting away!†Ken shouts, although I’m not sure whom he thinks is going to hear him. The Eagle flies down the ramp.

Musical Chairs again… now Jun is in Ken’s seat. Everyone on the God Phoenix seems to be having a hard time recovering from their narrow escape.

And suddenly Jun is on the floor, even though the previous shot clearly showed her in her seat.

“Ryu… cut the retro rockets…†Joe groans.

And Ryu manages to do it.

And the God Phoenix is saved again!

On the tanker mecha, the devil head logo falls down to reveal an escape hatch for Katse’s escape pod.

“Once it fires, the tanker will self-destruct!†Katse says to himself, as he launches his escape pod.

And sure enough, the big gun on the tanker fires… at the tanker itself.

Cracks quickly form, and the water flows in. The ship falls apart, but various capsules land in the ocean. Rockets carrying the radioactive cellulose deploy, and the pollution spreads across the water.
A goon is caught in the pollution.

Goons scream and drown in the pollution-infested waters, and I can just imagine the flesh dissolving from their bones. They don’t shoe it, but the image is in my mind. What we do see is goon masks floating to the surface.
“Katse just left his men there to die.†Joe says in astonishment, watching the goon masks float in polluted water.

Keep in mind that as Joe says this, no one is wondering where Ken could be.
“Some kind of leader, huh?†Joe notes.

And some kind of second-in-command you are, Joe, not worrying about your missing leader! But fortunately Ken takes matters into his own hands. Jun’s bracelet lights up with a message from the Eagle.
“The pollutants were released when the tanker exploded.†Ken says calmly. “Requesting rescue.â€
“Ryu, Ken’s in trouble!†Joe repeats. “Let’s get the God Phoenix down there and rescue him!†At least he’s on it now.
“You got it, Joe!†Ryu replies.
Ken is frantically swimming to stay ahead of the polluted water. I wonder how he called on his bracelet while he was doing that?

At least now we know why we never see the mini-sub again… it was apparently destroyed with the tanker mecha!
And no one is in Ken’s seat now, although his image is on the main viewscreen.

“Disgusting…†mutters Jun. I’ll bet you never thought Jun would call Ken ‘disgusting’!
“There he is!†Joe says.
“Hurry, Ken, you can do it!†Jun cries.
A platform is lowered from the God Phoenix for Ken, and he climbs up on it, just as the pollution is reaching him.

Ken is horrified!

Ken is pulled up into the God Phoenix, as the narrator tells us that many Galactor troops perished from the pollutants that they themselves had been releasing. However, because of the cleaning capsules that Galactor had also produced, the ocean regained its original beauty.

So…. these cleaning capsules are going to bring dead fish and coral back to life? Yeah… Well apparently so, because as bubbles rise up from the cleaning capsules, we see a school of fish swimming by.
The God Phoenix flies off to the strains of happy Shupa trumpet music.
“Okay, now let’s go after Berg Katse!†Ken orders.

“You don’t ever give up, do you?†Jinpei asks.

“Gatchaman’s duty is to hunt down enemies of the Earth, like Katse.†Joe answers grimly.

“Joe…†Ken says sternly. But then the two men smile at each other, and put their hands on each other shoulders. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s a yaoi moment!

And no one else knows what to make of this.

So Jun stands up and sticks her arm out too. Maybe she’s hoping Ken or Joe will place their hands on her person?

“Commence Operation Pursuit!†she orders.
Smash down the hated Galactor! The Science Ninja Team will continue to pursue Galactor even to the ends of the universe, all in the name of world peace!

And this is the end, even though it seems like they should resolve what happens after they chase Katse’s escape pod.
JMHO, but this episode would have been perfectly followed by Gatchaman Episode 73, Pursue Katse. However that episode is another 18 down the line, and was likely not on the planning horizon of the Tatsunoko writers at the time that this episode was written. Interestingly, in that episode, they actually use footage from Gatchaman Episode 34 to start the show with the God Phoenix chasing Katse’s ship.
But I’ll let James get into that.

BOTP Episode 12 – Mammoth Shark Menace
I’d like to give Ebonyswanne a special thanks here, because if it hadn’t been for her, I wouldn’t have had access to this episode to write the review and take screenshots.
Everything looks peaceful around Center Neptune, deep beneath the sea, but something doesn’t feel right. At least, not to Zark.
Perhaps that’s because Zark is in his elevation tube. He’s not feeling anything except the air rushing around him.

“I’ve had an inkling in my reactors all morning that Zoltar is brewing up new trouble for us on the Planet Spectra.†Zark says as he rises. “But I can’t pin it down!†He arrives in his oil-changing room.
“I’ve even activated my inter-dimensional probes, but so far, nothing!†Zark complains as he walks across the room. “I’ll take a ten second oil break and try to relax, but it won’t be easy!†Oh, I’m sure you’ll manage, Zark.
Zark reaches for his can of oil.

And then next thing you know, he’s oiling himself. That brings up a disturbing mental image, doesn’t it?
“Ah! There’s nothing like an ice cold can, after grueling hours in the control room.†Zark sighs happily. See? I told you he’d relax. He’s even got his hands underneath his head.

And after oiling himself, the perfect followup is a call from Susan. Zark answers with his usual ‘Center Neptune Control’.
“7-Zark-7!†breathes Susan huskily.
“Oh, yes, Susan!†Zark’s antennae pop. “Uh, may I help you?â€
“No.†Susan replies. “May I help you?â€
“Oh, you certainly…†Zark giggles, “I mean, you should only… oh, I hope so…†This last is said in a deep, husky tone, quite unlike Zark’s usual voice, and it’s making me feel all squicky. Ewwwww……
“An emergency report is coming in from Oceanographic Research.†Susan finally gets around to the main plot of the episode. “Code classification, ‘Condition Critical’.â€
“Thank you, Susan, I’ll get right on it!†Zark says, returning to his usual ‘business-like’ manner. Susan signs out and then Zark’s thoughts go all X-rated again.
“That voice… so warm and appealing… she could drive a robot to a complete circuit meltdown!†Zark sighs.
“Now, what was I supposed to... oh yes!†Zark finally remembers that there’s something going on. “We have a Condition Critical!â€
We cut to a scene of fish swimming in the clean ocean waters.
“Everything appears peaceful on my video scanners.†Zark comments in voiceover. “I wonder why Oceanographic Research issued an alert? I’d better have a look on my surface monitors.†He looks at waves crashing onto rocks.
“No problem on the coast that I can detect.†he notes. But then brown pollution spreads across the water, and dead fish rise to the top.
“Ah, that looks like our problem!†Zark exclaims. “I’ve never seen anything quite like it! That’s really serious. It’s not just regular old pollution…†And then the fish dissolve into skeletons. Yep, we actually see this. I’m psychologically damaged now.
“Oh, poor little fish!†Zark tsks. “I’m sure this is all Zoltar’s evil doing!†That’s right, because it’s impossible that humans would ever pollute their own planet.
“Attention G-Force, red alert!†Zark says, as we see images of dead fish washed up onto rocks and beaches. “We have a condition critical! A poisonous pollution is destroying all the fish in the ocean! The birds are eating the fish, and dying too! G-Force, your mission is to collect a sample of the pollutant and report to Chief Anderson.â€
We see the birds falling over, but unlike the poor fish, the flesh doesn’t completely melt from their bones.
We see a laboratory at Center Neptune, and Zark tells us that scientists are ‘now analyzing the deadly pollutant, with Chief Anderson supervising’.
Chief Anderson holds up a beaker on a stand.
“This chemical is definitely from an alien planet.†he tells the G-Force Team. “And that, no doubt, means Spectra.†I guess they haven’t had any encounters with other hostile planets yet.
“Have you analyzed it?†Mark asks.
“No, it defies chemical analysis.†Anderson replies. Is that how they determined it was alien?
“Maybe there’s a simple answer.†Princess suggests.
“Hmmm,†says Anderson, stroking his chin, “well, Princess, at this point I’m open to any new theories or ideas.â€
“Maybe a crack opened in the ocean floor, releasing a deadly gas.†Princess suggests. That might be it, except that would not make it ‘from an alien planet’, now would it?
“It’s possible.†the Chief says. “But we’ve never found such a toxic substance before. “If the oceans are poisoned, then all life on this planet is in jeopardy.â€
“Can it be that G-Force is not able to cope with this new disaster I bring you?†Zoltar laughs as Mark clenches his fist in a Condor-like manner. He’s appeared on a wall monitor.
“Zoltar.†Mark says, but his voice sounds much calmer than his expression would indicate.
“I have reason to laugh.†Zoltar goes on. “Forget your cerebonic powers! Now I have the power! You resisted us too long! Now the entire biological chain of life on your pale little planet will be poisoned into submission!â€
“No way. It’ll never happen, Zoltar.†Mark says calmly, while his face grimaces angrily.
“Remember the first law of nature: all life was started in the sea.†Zoltar says. “Now all life will be ended by the sea!â€
A bead of sweat falls down Chief Anderson’s face as he watches Zoltar laugh on the screen before disappearing.
“Zoltar is right.†Anderson says. “Unless we find the source of his pollutant, Earth could be doomed.â€
“We’ll find it, ‘cause we’re G-Force.†Mark says grimly, doing his salute.
“G-Force!†the rest of the Team shouts and salutes.
And now we’re watching the Phoenix launch to the sounds of BOTP music. Soon they are flying over the ocean.
“Keep your eyes peeled.†Mark orders. “It’s a big ocean, and you know how tricky Zoltar is.â€
“We’ve gotta find him!†Jason replies.
“If we don’t check that pollution, there won’t be a fish left.†Mark says, his face very stern.
“Decoy Zoltar on the monitor,†Jason says suddenly, snapping his fingers with his brilliant idea, “and then get Zark to spot his location!â€
“Sounds good, Mark!†Tiny agrees. “Zoltar can’t resist teasing us on the tube.â€
“Princess, pretend to contact Base.†Mark orders.
“Gotcha!†Princess replies.
And sure enough, Zoltar-Claus appears on their communications screen.
“Yuck!†says Keyop.
“G-Force calling 7-Zark-7.†Mark says into his CB mic. “Calling 7-Zark-7. Come in, Zark! We need a directional fix.â€
“Nice try, G-Force, but you’ve had it!†Zoltar laughs.
“He’s got us jammed.†Jason explains. “Keep trying, Mark!†Jason seems extremely disappointed by this development.
“It’s no use, Jason. All channels are zonked. I can’t make contact with Center Neptune.†Mark says. Is Zoltar hearing this?
“Well anyway, we don’t have to listen to the purple creep anymore.†Jason points out the bright side of their failed plan. So Zoltar’s image goes away.
“Rudder full left, Tiny. Open forward thrusters.†Mark says, leaning over and looking grim. “Something ahead!â€
The something turns out to be three tanker ships.
“Just some tankers on their way south.†Jason says. Keyop plays with his bolas.
“Despite all your powers, you are helpless to stop the biological destruction of your oceans!†Zoltar taunts them, suddenly appearing from out of nowhere on the communications monitor. “Soon all life in the sea will succumb. But I, Zoltar, will rule Earth for Spectra!â€
“Take the Phoenix down.†Mark orders Tiny, as Zoltar fades out. “I want to look at the sea bottom.â€
“Big ten!†Tiny agrees. He dives and the Phoenix settles quietly on the ocean floor.
“Nice and peaceful here, Mark.†Tiny observes. “It reminds me… I forgot to feed my rare goldfish.â€
“Sonar reading?†Mark asks, apparently unconcerned with the fate of Tiny’s rare goldfish.
“Sonar is scanning.†Princess reports. “Wait! I think I’ve got something.†Sure enough, we see a rocket sub in the water approaching the Phoenix.

Aaaaanddddd….. we cut to Zark.
His antennae are not only popping, they’re sparking! Perhaps he’s just thrilled to be wearing his G-Force helmet and cape today.

“Calling G-Force! Red alert!†Zark says. “My sensitive probes have detected a strange object shaped like a giant shark cruising near the Phoenix!†Ugh… I shudder when I hear Zark talking about his ‘sensitive probes’.
“My receptors indicate it is not a shark, but a powerful weapon!†Zark adds. “Prepare your torpedoes! Over.â€

So yep, G-Force would never have figured out that the rocket sub was a missile if Zark hadn’t told them. Bleargh…
FWIW, I don’t think this rocket looks anything like a shark. Sheesh, you’d think a robot who spent all day staring out the windows of his underwater room would know what a shark looked like!
The shark… uh… rocket… settles on a ledge above where the Phoenix is positioned. Princess spots it.
“That blip is now parked behind us.†she informs Mark.
“Erase it.†suggests Jason.
“Release torpedoes.†Mark agrees. So Jason presses the red button and shoots a torpedo. The rocket sub/shark explodes and releases pollution into the water.
“We got it!†says Tiny.
But the pollution being released is causing fish to die. We actually see more fish disintegrate. I guess the Sandy Frank ‘no killing guidelines’ apply to humans and dogs, but not robots and fish.
Suddenly, G-Force is surrounded by a horrible landscape of fish skeletons and dead coral.
“You managed to destroy one of our carriers,†Zoltar-Claus says, appearing on the communications screen again, “but only succeeded in releasing more of our powerful pollutant into your sea!â€
“Zoltar lucked out again.†says Jason. His voice is only mildly disappointed, but his face is devastated, and he bows his head in shame. In fact, everyone has their head bowed. They’re all clearly upset.
The pollution continues to kill plants and sea life. The Phoenix flies back into the sky, but everyone is still distraught. The three tanker ships are still on the monitor.
“I can’t stand to think of all the living things in the sea dying!†says Princess, before bowing her head again.
Two more carriers/rocket subs/sharks move through the ocean waters, spreading the pollution as they go. A real shark dies in their wake.
And on that dramatic note, it’s time for a commercial break!
We return to find Zark still in his G-Force uniform, at his station. Suddenly, his station turns off and starts sparking! Zark backs away.

“Zoltar must be using a new type of electronic jamming device.†Zark says.
His monitors come back on, and then Zark turns them off again. He raises himself up on his legs to clean them.

“I thought I had a radar fix on one of those evil robot sharks.†Zark says, “But it was only a fly speck on the glass.â€
How do they get flies in an underwater complex?
“It’s embarrassing to make a silly readout boo-boo like that!†Zark says. Zark, you don’t have any idea how embarrassing you truly are.
“G-Force is depending on me to advise them, and I’ll find a way to patch through somehow.†Zark assures us.
Back on the Phoenix, everyone is so depressed by ocean pollution that they’re all hanging their heads in sorrow. Jason’s belt buckle has reversed colors.
“Even if there’s no word from Zark, we can’t just sit here!†Jason decides, as his belt buckle returns to its usual color. “We’ve gotta stop that pollution!â€
“You’re absolutely right, Jason.†Mark agrees. “Now if you’ll just tell us where Zoltar’s new base is, we’ll do it.†Gee, Mark, getting in your daily dose of sarcasm?
“I think I can.†Tiny says. “Those tankers below.â€
“That’s the answer, Tiny!†Mark instantly agrees. “They’re not flying any flags, and these aren’t regular shipping lanes. I’m going to take my rocket sub and go below for another look.†I’ll bet you didn’t know Mark had a rocket sub!
At least Mark is giving Tiny credit for his idea.
And Tiny’s idea is so good that the triumphant BOTP trumpet music plays. The nose of the Phoenix opens up and the rocket sub is seen underneath the Spacemobile. The Spacemobile suddenly disappears, and the rocket sub drops into the water.
In the ocean, the fish are still dying. The two ‘evil robot sharks’ are still spreading pollution. But Mark is on their tail, in his rocket sub!
“Those robot sharks are remote-controlled from somewhere close!†Mark says, completely forgetting about the discovery that the tankers were suspicious. Then he sees the ‘evil robot sharks’ going into the bottom of one of the tankers.
“Tiny was right.†Mark remembers. “Spectra’s newest secret base is inside the bellies of the tankers. I’ll contact the Phoenix and…â€
But Mark stops talking to himself when he sees a toxic spray entering his rocket sub. He covers his mouth, coughing and choking.
“I’d better… cough … join those robot sharks!†he says. “Okay… up!†Mark barely manages to sneaks in his rocket sub alongside an ‘evil robot shark’.
Inside the tanker, we see goons operating controls.
“Transfer carriers to decontamination tank!†says one. Sure enough, the carriers/robot sharks are sent into a special room to be cleaned.
“But we sent out only two carriers!†says one observant goon, spotting Mark’s rocket sub on the monitor. “That’s not one of ours!†Two other goons rush over to see.
The door to the control room opens, sending in a spray of cleaning fluid. The goons are blown away.
It’s Mark!
He jumps into the room, aaaaandddd….
We see the outside of the tanker, sailing on the ocean’s surface. The Phoenix flies overhead.
Back inside the tanker (in a different room) Zoltar sees the Phoenix on his monitors.
“Well! We’re going to get all of G-Force!†he exclaims happily. “They don’t realize what trouble they’ve flown into! Transform the tankers! Ready the Gravity Ran Gun!â€
And sure enough, the three tanker ships merge and form one giant tanker robot ship. It’s a cool transformation. It’s stuff like this that kept me watching the show as a kid, despite Zark.
“Up to something!†Keyop burbles. “Bad scene!â€
But no one does anything about this.
The Phoenix flies over the tanker, and Keyop (now in Mark’s seat) sees the Gravity Ray Gun pointed at them.
“Hands up!†he cries.
“Where’s Mark?†Jason wants to know.
“I’m taking her down for a closer look.†Tiny says.
“Here they come!†Zoltar says. “Gravity Ray Guns, in position! They’re in for a lovely surprise.â€
“Wait till they’re directly above.†Zoltar orders his men in a hushed whisper. Yes, the anticipation is so thick, you could cut it with a sonic boomerang!
“Ready… fire!†Zoltar shouts.
The Gravity Ray Gun hits the Phoenix, stopping it in its tracks. It begins pulling the Phoenix closer… its ‘gravity’ attack, I presume.
“Kick it over to anti-gravity thrust.†Jason instructs Tiny.
“Won’t budge!†Tiny replies.
“Try to transmute!†Jason orders. Transmute to what? Fiery Phoenix?
“Can’t!†Tiny groans, pulling on the levers.
“Switch to ram jets!†Jason suggests. You know, I find it amazing that Mark (and now Jason) is always giving Tiny instructions on how to fly the Phoenix. For goodness’ sake, he’s the pilot! You’d think that Tiny could figure all of this stuff out on his own.
The Phoenix begins showing stress fractures.
“They can’t tear away from that force.†Zoltar observes from his control room. “We’ll let them hang up there until their power is drained! G-Force has sent me home in defeat too often, and now they shall dearly pay for it!â€
The Phoenix is definitely struggling, and a brief shot of the Team onboard shows that they can barely move. The ship continues to fracture.
“They’re running out of power. Pull them in, Gorko!†Zoltar orders. Ooh, a Spectran goon with a name. How quaint.
“Stand by.†Zoltar commands. “Prepare a reception party for G-Force when they land.â€
“We’ve got a little party planned for you already, Zoltar.†comes Mark’s voice. Zoltar turns around to see the Commander standing behind him.
“How can it be?†Zoltar exclaims.
“I’ve reprogrammed your Gravity Ray to self-destruct, so call off your dogs and surrender!†Mark demands. Apparently there are no goons in the room, as no one tries to attack Mark.
“Surrender? That’s most amusing!†Zoltar smiles. But sure enough, the Gravity Ray Gun turns off, and the Phoenix gets away.
Zoltar is shocked by this development!
He presses a button on the floor, and slides down the floor panel that drops away.
“Oh no you don’t!†Mark says, quickly moving to follow.
Meanwhile, onboard the Phoenix…
“Tiny, level her out!†Jason orders with a weird squint. “Quick!â€
“I’ll try!†Tiny says, crawling up to his level. He seems to be on the floor for some reason. He pulls the lever, and the Phoenix is now fine.

Zoltar’s escape pod readies for launch.
“G-Force has won again. Abandon ship!†Zoltar orders, before taking off.
The Gravity Ray Gun suddenly starts firing at the robot tanker, and the ship quickly falls apart. We see goon masks floating in the water, but there’s no information about what happened to the men who had been wearing them.
“I hope Mark made it.†Tiny says, observing everything from the Phoenix.
“He always makes it.†says Jason confidently.
“It’s Mark! He’s okay!†shouts Princess happily, as her communicator lights up.
“Hey, Team, I could use a pickup!†Mark says. “I’m in the middle of all of this brown yuck!â€
“Can’t see him from here.†Tiny says. “We’ll have to go down and do a little surfing.†So the Phoenix flies down to the water’s surface and looks for Mark.
The Commander is rapidly swimming away from the ‘brown yuck’.
“Quick, Tiny, pick him up†Princess shouts, as she spots Mark on the main viewscreen.
“Ready the rescue platform!†Jason orders.
The rescue platform lowers, and Mark clambers onto it just as the brown sludge is reaching him.
“Phew!†he thinks.
“Well, that was a close call.†Zark voices over, as Mark is raised up into the Phoenix. “But Zoltar helped defeat his own evil scheme this time. I’d like to see the look on his face when he realizes that by blowing up his own ship, he also released the liquid to deactivate the pollutant. That’s what all those cylinders are for. And the anti-toxin is already making the water safe for undersea life once again.†And to prove this, we see fish swimming amongst the cleaning bubbles.
On the Phoenix, they spot Zoltar’s escape pod on the main viewscreen.
“That must be Zoltar up ahead.†Mark says. “We’ve still got a crack at him.â€
“Can’t do it, Mark.†Jason says. “The Phoenix took a real pounding.â€
So what does Mark do? He smiles at Jason and the two men put their hands on each other’s shoulders. Yes, it’s a BOTP yaoi moment!
“At least we stopped him from ruining our oceans.†Mark says, as the others look on in disbelief.
“One day we’ll catch Old Kinky.†Princess says, standing up and pointing at Zoltar’s ship. I don’t even want to know where she came up with that nickname for Zoltar.
Back to Zark.
“G-Force is safely on its way home again and… no, 1-Rover-1, but G-Force isn’t bringing Zoltar back with them. He got away again.â€

Rover yaps.
“Yes, I know how you’ve been looking forward to biting him.†Zark says. “Maybe you’ll get a chance one day.â€
“Rover can bite too.†Zark tells us. “Right through a steel bar.â€
Rover yaps again.
“All right, you run down below, and meet G-Force when they return.†Zark says to Rover.
“He loves to meet the Team when they come back from a successful mission.†Zark informs us.

“I’d love to meet them in person someday myself.†Zark sighs. “But until that happy day, I’ll stick right here and do my best for… G-Force!â€
And with a salute, the episode ends.

Another fun recap, TJ!

So…. these cleaning capsules are going to bring dead fish and coral back to life? Yeah… Well apparently so, because as bubbles rise up from the cleaning capsules, we see a school of fish swimming by. |
|
It's always seemed a bit too "deus ex machina" to me that the cleaning capsules would oh-so-conveniently just break open and instantly restore the sea. Then again, it was also oh-so-convenient that the God Phoenix just happened to have a mini-sub on board too for this episode. But, in episode 54, a chunk of burning Crab-killer debris bashes off one of the God Phoenix's wing pods that holds either Jinpei's buggy or Jun's motorcycle. We could assume that it was Jinpei's buggy (the only vehicle that can go underwater) that got hit and that it isn't fully repaired yet so, just this once, Dr. Nambu supplied them with a mini-sub to use if needed. Yeah, that's my theory!
quote: |
“Joe…†Ken says sternly. But then the two men smile at each other, and put their hands on each other shoulders. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s a yaoi moment!
So Jun stands up and sticks her arm out too. Maybe she’s hoping Ken or Joe will place their hands on her person? |
|
Ken/Joe yaoi might well be Jun's worst nightmare. I don't blame her for trying to get in on the embracing!

Earth has recovered remarkably from the V2 plan. What happened? Did the SNT reach the castle of the Fisher King and did Jinpei ask the rejuvenating question that heals the Waste Land? (And Jinpei would ask the question, being the blunt kid that he is. Unlike Percival, who tried so hard to be polite that he unwittingly sentenced the poor guy to remain crippled and his land unproductive.)
Here, and in the Jellyfish Lens episode, sections of ocean are treated as if they have boundaries. Pollutants stay within those boundaries, rather than dispersing from the action of tides and currents. (In the Jellyfish Lens ep., the entire city is treated as if it's encased somehow. The air and ocean pollutants should have dispersed long ago, leaving only the poisons that have contaminated the soil and city.) That pollutant must be really thick to stay in such a small area.
I can see Galactor carrying along the means to neutralize their poison. At this time, they aren't ready to destroy everything. They'd want to clean up the ocean ASAP.
