I'm afraid I gave up on 'A Song of Ice and Fire' after reading book 6, in which nothing happened to advance the plot. I realised that while there were some cool overarching plot hooks and hints, they were few and far between, and that 98% of the story was a bunch of horrible people doing horrible things to each other.
That was when I gave all the books away. My sister lent me the Season One DVDs, but I got bored after the first five minutes and wandered off to do housework instead.

I gave up on the books as well, but I m ok with the show. I haven’t started watching the last series yet — and unlike most fans, I have no problem with spoilers, if anyone wants to throw some my way.

I think as a TV series GOT it moves better than the later books.
At times that happens in book series that go over 4 books to complete them. (I gave up on Sword of truth- Terry Goodkind for the same reason.)
The world becomes too big, and character individual stories too big.
Well its looking like the GOT fanfiction fandoms will have plenty of avenues to do rewrites of the series ending and things they aren't happy about.

I really enjoyed the books. The TV series, while good changed a lot mid-series. I definitely wasn't happy with the way it ended, but am not surprised at the way it went. Only time will tell if we EVER get the final books. GRRM has said the books and the show will have similar endings but they ways we get there might be different - so I look forward to making the comparison if we get the chance.
I think the only other long book series I've read was "The Dark Tower" (overall I loved it, and again, didn't like the ending and KNEW SK would pull that kind of ending) and the "Wheel of Time" series, which for the love of God I TRIED to read, but didn't make it past the first book.

I really enjoyed the Wheel of Time series . . . until about book 8 or 9 when the world got a little too big. Too many characters to keep track of, and so much going on with main characters spread across the world. Still, I persevered until the end just to see how it all came together. In the end I think I was more relieved that it was finished rather than happy with how it ended!
