I don't mind Pimer (the Gatch II autopilot). As you say, LB, he served an appropriate purpose (flying the ship, to allow Ryu to get off and go on missions and have his own G-machine) and didnt' talk too often. And when he did talk, it was very 'mechanical' and impersonal... NO personality quirks!

Trying to recall what Pimer looks like, and coming across a bit where Jinpei kicks him, led to some gif-making.

If only they could have kicked Zark!

LB, that's great.

I'd forgotten Pimer looks like a big gumball machine.

I just want to know what nutcase actually agreed to those demands of Zark's!

Thanks a lot for the neat info, Jason!

I too grew up watching Gatchaman, having had the fortunate possibility to see all the series one after the other! I just saw a couple of BotP episodes before Gatchaman took over and I almost completely forgot all about Zark until I've joined this site as a grownup! Must say that I really have to be honest and admit that I don't regret having had Zark out of my childhood at all! I remember Rover not being a burden at all, and Pimer in Gatch II being likewise as it only fulfilled its duties without any annoying additions like Zark's!

Great gif, LB!

I'd guess someone(s) who correctly realized the necessity of a narrator to fill in the exposition gaps and explain that "everyone is evacuated," "those planes are flown by robots," or "he/she escaped at the last minute and is just fine now!" but who didn't have a good grasp at all of how to give said narrator a personality, or scenes, that would appeal to most kids!

I recall groaning in irritated impatience, as a kid, whenever the show cut to a Zark scene.

Or maybe all they would have had to do was, via some dialogue bits, make it clear that the G-Force members thought he was neurotic, controlling, patronizing, weird (re. Susan) too, instead of them gushing that he's a genius, or kissing him!

Have to say Zark might have worked if they had created him much more likeable in the first place!

Yes, I totally understand the need for a narrator, but the personality is what did me in. And I agree, LB, the fact that the Team were always going on about how great he was! Puke2

Not all of them. I don't remember Jason ever saying anything good about him. Zark implied Jason contacted him in the Strike on Spectra, but that still wasn't Jason saying anything good about him.

But he didn't say anything bad, that I can recall.

I think it was mostly Mark and Princess who complimented Zark, especially in the scenes where they were in the Ready Room with him.

Poor Mark and Princess, they really did get set up to be the "Teacher's Pets," in the show, didn't they? Kids must have been a bit confused, wondering "Do they really like him that much, or are they being suck-ups?"

Posted by Becky Rock on 20-11-2011 at 20:28:

If you don't have anything good to say, you don't say anything at all - but Jason had no problem with speaking his mind usually.

I know there were a couple fics where Anderson said to someone he regretted ever giving the okay for Zark to be built.

I like that -after all, Zark does take credit for some stuff, at Anderson's expense, that was done/developed by Nambu in the Gatch version.

I've seen fics too where the G-Force members praise and coo over Zark but only to humor him, because they really think he's irritating but realize they're stuck with him -that's always worked for me.

Posted by KT1972 on 21-11-2011 at 09:28:

Lol2
I've enjoyed the fics where he ends up in tiny bits and pieces!!! Clap Clap Clap

We did a fic exchange on the BOTP ML a couple of years ago. My request was for 'Zark gets what he truly deserves' and the author did a wonderful job of balancing those 'suck-up comments while still doing exactly what I asked. Big Grin

So I think it's possible... both can be done... you just have the be creative and stretch your mind a bit.

And since you're all dying to know what happens after G-Force realizes that they've been drugged, here's the next panel. The answer is simple: when aliens drug you, turn it into a food fight!

P.S. Who gave Mark Jason's angry pills?
