Ah, thanks. It's been years since I've been down that way.

The mothball fleet that I was thinking of, is old naval vessels in the Carquinez Straight just east of the Benica-Martinez Bridge.

Or more generally, about an hour east of Oakland/San Francisco.

I don't know about G-Force (I think they were humanoid opponents) but ER was the one where the Vorak were supposed to have an android army.

In the case of BOTP, besides all the UN fighter pilots, I can think of some characters that were flesh-and-blood in Gatchaman but robots in BOTP (the captain-of-the-week in "Race with Disaster" comes to mind). I'm wondering now what it might have been like if BOTP, like ER, had presented all the green-clad goons as robots...

Since they never showed anyone dieing in BotP, except the doctor friend of Mark's who fell into the earthquake chasm, they might as well have been robots.

Yes, it would have been a simple solution...but I'm guessing the 70s sensors wouldn't even go for that?

I'm guessing they probably wouldn't have gone for it

Funny, but I can remember way back, when I first saw Star Wars, being confused as to whether the Storm Troopers were robots or real people. With them all being faceless and identical, and without much personality at all, it was easy to feel pretty indifferent about them all getting shot or blown up by the heroes. If I'd been able to see expressions of fear or pain on their faces, as a little kid, I'd possibly have found it upsetting.

In the scene in "Rage of the Robotoids," where they're all fighting the female mannequin "robotoids" at the end, a lot of that fight scene got cut from the Gatch version even though it's clear the opponents aren't human -but I think some of that might have been because someone thought that mannequins who've made their legs into sharp skewers and who are about to drop from the ceiling and impale G-Force was too disturbing, although some bits where it was just the mannequins getting clobbered were cut too.

If the Spectran goons looked like real humans, albeit wearing masks, and appeared to be reacting with fear or pain in fights, then it might have been considered unsuitable for children to see, even if Zark kept reminding everyone they were all robots, just "programmed" to mimic people.

But the fact that the Spectran goons so often had names, and indications of personality, really added to the show. If they'd been nameless, and all speaking in identical, monotone voices, I think it would have made the show duller.

So, even though Jason got deprived of most of his best fight moves and scenes, I guess it's a good thing that the BOTP people didn't take the ER route of making them all robots.

You forget... in BOTP they could have been nameless goons speaking in monotone voices... had Sandy Frank et al wanted that. I agree, it would have made the show duller... or potentially more terrifying (like the Terminator's monotone, or even the monotone of the Portal robots).

Today: did you know that the G-Force Team went through a 'power up' ritual?

More evidence that the creators of this comic were clueless about the universe they were working in. That or they were trying to be the original Crack Fic.

But they did get the 24 hour idea right. If I remember one of the first comments from Zark being they will remain in Firebird mode for 24 hours - or maybe that was, recovering from Firebird mode takes 24 hours. I will have to rewatch the episode - I think it was the first one.

So the writers had the team actually linked to the Phoenix. Interesting.

I'm wondering where they got it from... did they make it up, or did they 'borrow' it from elsewhere?

Oh boy, now they're really making stuff up here!

I recogize the planets Mark's naming -is this the beginning of the episode where they each encounter the evil robot doubles of themselves?

It kind of reminds me of the way they do the tornado fighter in Gatch II, in episode 3...
