I agree, seeing Ken's background is interesting, and adds more dimension to his character. As to where his Mom was... she was probably doing her 'face shaded in darkness'; makeup. Wink

Hi all!

quote:
I'm totally guessing here (and I suspect James will chime in here with his wonderful font of knowledge) but I would think that when the BOTP people did this episode, they weren't thinking at all of Cronus and Mark being related. SO they brushed that under the rug with Cronus 'having another family'.

That is the likely scenario. When peaks of Planet Odin was being produced, they probably had no idea that they'd be doing Sky is Falling, and didn't want to get into the entire "Cronus is Mark's father" aspect of this now-stand alone story.

quote:
I don't recall any further mention of Cronus' new wife, or Timmy, but I'm not so up on it.

No, there are no other references to his wife and Timmy.

quote:
As for Dr. Nambu rather unwise timing for this big announcement, I wonder if either he honestly thought Ken would take the news calmly and remain focused on the mission.

Honestly, I chalk this up more to poor writing than a logical decision by the character. It was the end of the episode, and the first of a 3-part story, but they didn't have the really strong hook to draw viewers back that they have in Part II. So, they threw Nambu's comment in to help build anticipation for the next episode, even though his doing so makes little sense.

quote:
And where the heck was his mom when the drowning was going on?

I do wonder if Ken's dreams of this event should be taken so literally. Yes, Kentaro dunked him underwater, but did he really hold him under for as long as it seems? Part of the point of the scene was that Ken couldn't remember what his father looked like, resulting in the long, lingering underwater shot of his shadow-faced father, but is this really meant to be a real-time demonstration of these past events? I'm not saying that they aren't, only that it is possible that they aren't supposed to be. Regardless, it's hard to watch these scenes and not wonder about young Ken's lung capacity...

Anyway, a Japanese fan did a cartoon based on this scene that I figured you might enjoy. So, here it is, conveniently translated for your English-language perusal.

Great review, TJ. I think you mentioned somewhere in here how the BotP episode viewing order differs from Gatchaman. The only episode orders I can find for BotP are the ones that coincide with the Gatch order. Do you have or can you recommend a place to find the viewing order or the original airing order?

James you're a fount of knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

And once again, what a great episode summary. I'm really enjoying starting my Mondays with a little Gatchaman fun.

Posted by clouddancer on 20-10-2009 at 12:02:

James, thanks for sharing the cartoon. I like that comment you made about that image of Ken looking up at his father from underwater is a memory from Ken's POV so it probably appears to be longer that really did occur.

When a person wants to focus on a specific point you can draw it out in your memory, or at least I do. Looking

I'm not sure where to find it online... I know it's out there, but I'll have to look. I got the order from the Jason Hofius book.

I found the viewing order by going to Wikipedia and typing in 'Battle of the Planets' and then following some links. You'll get to a site that shows the viewing order of the DVD set (which is the wrong order), followed by the Sandy Frank ordering, and then a couple of other orderings for other countries.

I also went and typed out that list, along with the accompanying 'Gatch' episodes.

They did not intend it, but the BOTP writers tossed in plenty of fic fuel.

Head on over to Veoh, try not to look at Zark (but you do have to listen to him/it Crying1 ), and you'll find out what I mean. The Veoh episodes are NOT in the Sandy Frank order.

Hi all!

To make things a little easier, here's a copy of the "Sandy Frank" order for the series. This is essentially the production order for episodes of Battle of the Planets, and is a good way to view them is you want to see how the series progressed as it was being made.

It should also be remembered that Sandy Frank produced several different suggested order lists. When Jason was going through the paperwork from Sandy Frank's archives, he came across numerous partial viewing order lists that, while often similar, did not exactly match up with each other. This list was the only one what was a complete list of all 85 episodes, so that was the one he went with.

The Cata-roller is a Galactor mecha based upon a device that has appeared in fiction before. A giant, armed and armored wheel that mows down everything around it made its appearance in pulp fiction, and has been proposed in speculations about future military vehicles. Those versions don't fly, or have grabber arms, though.

If anyone is interested, I spent far too much time making up a list of BOTP episodes (in order), with their corresponding Gatch episodes, AND the numbers of the DVD/Veoh order. So, if you're stuck at home for whatever reason, and your Internet connection is in order, you can see what's going on.

(I've already had to redo a couple of parts of my crossover, but not the plot-essential bits. I like the idea of Cronus shaking some sense into Mark's head. He didn't pound him the way RI did in the original.)

can't you just cut and paste it into a response box?

Or maybe what you have is longer than I imagine it to be.

Yes, you should be able to copy and paste. If for some reason that doesn't work, you could take a screenshot of it and then upload the image to Photobucket and post here.

Making a screenshot depends on what type of computer and software you have available.

As for Photobucket, you can open up a free account, and upload jpgs gifs. Once you do, it will host the images, and even provide you with html and message board [IMG] tags in case you want to copy and paste the links.
