Why, oh why, didn't Tatsunoko let Ken act upon his feelings?? Even an initiated embrace would have been nice. I'm guessing that since the ratings of F were going down and they had to end the series a month earlier than planned, the creators weren't able to depict that part of their relationship, though they had initially intended to do so. Wishful thinking, I know. Animetongue

I knew there had to be something intended there!!! Whoo hoo...

Here's the dialogue that goes with TJ's screen caps.Slap

Episode 37 "Gatchaman, Revive"
Written by Akira Nakahara

(Jun takes off in the jet with the equipment.)
Jun: Please be safe, Director.

Nambu: Jun, I'm counting on you. (He starts shooting.)

Goon: Sir, Nambu is not on that jet. It was a member of the KNT.

Mechandol: Is that so? That's even better. Let's go.

Jun: (Inside the jet, she holds the comlink up to her mouth.) Joe, come in. Joe!

Joe: This is Joe.

Jun: (To herself) I got through to him.

(Cut to a room in the ISO building. Ken is lying on a bed, with Joe at his side.)

Joe: (Talking to Jun on his comlink) Got it. I'm on my way.

(Ken abruptly gets up and runs out of the room.)

Joe: Wait, Ken! (Joe grabs Ken's arm.)

Joe: You promised not to fight. If you do, it'll further the cell disruption.

Ken: (Ken breaks Joe's grip) I can't do that. Director Nambu's being attacked by Galactor. I can't just stay here and do nothing! (Ken runs off.)

Joe: Wait, Ken! (Joe goes after him.)

(Ryu and Jinpei sees the two running.)

Joe: (To Ryu and Jinpei) Stop him!

(Cut to the rooftop of the ISO building, where Jun's jet is landing. Ken and the others are standing. )

(Jun gets out, walks towards Ken and slaps him.)

Jun: You call yourself a level-headed commander acting like that? Do you know who Director Nambu's fighting for right now? It's you, Ken! He's doing it because he wants you to live! What you're doing to yourself is shortening your life. You're a fool. A damned fool! Who told me, "Giving up the will to live is a foolish thing to do?" "I won't allow you to do that. When we die, we die together." You're the one who said all this!

(Tears are streaming down Jun's face. Ryu and Jinpei give them a glance, and runs off. Joe puts a hand on Ken's shoulder and also runs. Jun turns around to follow them.)

Ken: Jun...I'm sorry.

Jun: (With her back towards Ken) I hate it when you apologize like that.

(The four take off in their vehicles, as Ken watches.)

Ken: Guys...thank you. (Tears are in his eyes.)

Thanks !!! That explains a lot of what went on in that scene. I think I wrote it all wrong! I just did it recently trying to go of screen caps. I might look over it again and see if I can pick more of what they said to keep it closer to cannon. If thats okay with you Minazuki to use your translations.

Ebonyswanne,

You sure can use my translations! I'm eagerly waiting for your next fic.

The following is the "starry night" scene. Actually, it takes place at dusk, hence the orangish color of the sparkling sea in the background. But you know, Jun is so OOC in this scene, this ep doesn't make this Jun fan happy at all... But I admit that scene with Ken and Jun looking at each other is rather nice.

*******************************
From episode#37

(This is Jun's flashback)

Jun is standing at the edge of a cliff. About 15 or so goons are lined up, with guns aimed at her. She backs up a little, but realizes she can't back up much further, as part of the ground she is standing on breaks off, and falls into the ocean below. She draws out her own gun, but it's quickly shot out of her hand by one of the goons.

Jun: This is impossible... I can't win this one...

Goon: Hehehe... Die! (The goons get ready to fire.)

(Suddenly, Ken attacks the goons from behind, using kicks and punches. When all of them are down, Jun, smiling with tears of joy in her eyes, runs up to Ken.)

Jun: Ken!

(Ken slaps her. Holding a hand up to her cheek, Jun bows her head.)

Ken: Why did you give up without putting up a fight? Nothing is more foolish than giving up the will to live. I wont allow you to die on your own. When we die, we die together.

(Starry scene here)

******************************

Jun has always fought those goons with ease. I'm wondering why she didn't do anything here. The goons were just regular green goons! No Taicho of the Week or anything. And worse yet, she just stood there and watched while Ken did all the fighting. Talk about Damsel in Distress. Nono1

Posted by Springie on 10-03-2009 at 09:02:

Ken slaps her again??? UGH...this is sad...I'm hating that she doesn't fight back. I saw part of that scene on ER and wondered why she didn't fight...it didn't look like a situation she couldn't handle...and I also wondered why she stood there and watched Ken do all the work.

Was she depressed about Ken or something? Why had she given up the will to live?

Maybe thats his way of saying "You worried me and I thought I was about to lose you..."

Not very tactful of him was it! I had them fighting equally in my section of the story and the beat off the goons together... not him slapping her. He just his hand on her cheek affectionalty.

It is OOC for her to back down so easily, they only other time I can think of is when she found Joe and was cornered by some goons and the condor took them down with a shuriekn, saving her. Again a damsel in distress....

(I went back over the scene! My guess work wording was closer than I thought, just split up more. I did however justify why Jun gave up so easily, actually it worked out well.) Your translations ROCK!!!!

I agree, that's OOC for Jun, but I suppose yo could come up with some other explanation (she ahd been poisoned/drugged, she had just escaped from imprisonment and was wounded/exhausted).

But the Ken slapping her thing... I never liked that, even in Jigokillers. I'm not happy with her slapping him either.

All I can think is that the scene with Jun and all the goons is meant to mirror her later scene on the roof with Ken. In the first one, he slaps her for not fighting and tells her not to give up the will to live, and that when they die they'll die together.

I think it's meant to be ironic that later, she slaps him for wanting to fight (which will kill him), tells him not to give up the will to live and that when they die, they'll die together.

So, she uses his own words against him, and persuades him to stay behind. Unfortunately, the way the writers went about setting this up doesn't reflect so well on Jun. I've heard that Gatchaman Fighter gets pretty "dark" and depressing. I can only think that Jun is, this late in a hard war, getting depressed and starting, on some level, to feel that it might be better to just die and get it over with, and that that is why she didn't fight back against the goons after she lost her gun, or help Ken take them down.

The slap that I find the most disturbing is in Gatch II, ep. 27. It got cut out of Eagle Riders (no surprise there) but I saw it mentioned in Daniela's script, and then looked it up in Reboekah's screencaps and thought "damn."

http://reboekah.peregrine-intl.com/GatchEp/tnIndex.html?serId=KNTG%20II&epNbr=27&pgNbr=4

The look on Ken's face...

But I used it in my latest fic, though, as it served a purpose that I needed in the story.

Posted by Ebonyswanne on 10-03-2009 at 21:28:

What did she do to 'deserve' that? (I meant in Gatch II ep not in the ficcie.)

I thought of that too, that it was like a tie in. Gosh the slap each other around in Gatch don't they!

Well, here's the accompanying translation from Daniela's site. Keep in mind she's translating a translation (Japanese to Italian to English) and I don't know how accurate the Italian translation was.

[Gatchaman leave on board the Phoenix. Ken inserts Pandra's memorizer into the computer]
Ken Route X50. If Dr. Pandra is right, the base must be in that direction.
Jimpei I don't know if we can trust her. All this history of monstrous brain waves look a lot like a sci-fi plot.
Jane I believe her, Dr. Nambu would have never chosen an irresponsible assistant.
Ryu It's useless to keep discussing, we soon will find out the truth.
Ken If everything goes as planned we might locate Galactors' head quarters.
[An acoustic sound announces a communication]
Ryu What? Incoming message.
[Ken grabs the onboard telephone, being the only one to hear the message]
Ken G-Force here, speak. What?
[Ken hangs the telephone, while the others start to worry]
Jane Ken! What happened?
Ken It was a message from the hospital. Dr. Nambu... is dead!
[G-Force shows all the shock the message brought]
Jane What???
Jimpei Eh?
Ryu Oh God
Joe Damned!
[As Jane falls over her console crying, Joe runs toward the elevator without anyone noticing]
Ken I can't believe he's dead. Doctor Nambu
Jane Ken!
[Jane turns on the screen and all of them see G-2 leaving the Phoenix]
Jane Joe is gone! Look!
Ken Joe!
[Inside the G-2]
Joe I'll find out that woman's true face with any mean.
[G-2 goes away. Meanwhile, on board the Phoenix...]
Jane Ken, let's go back!
Jimpei Jane is right, let's go back!
Ryu Maybe Joe is right, Dr. Pandra might be a Galactor.
Jane Maybe if we go back we can find out the truth about that woman. Maybe she killed Nambu!
Ken I disagree.
Jane But Ken! What are you saying?
Ken Ehi. Did you forget we have an important mission to fulfil?
Jane But this is a special situation. Dr. Nambu is...
Jimpei I agree with Jane. Dr. Nambu was like a father to all of us and now he's dead. We can't stay here, we have to go back!
Jane Ken, let's go back and see Dr. Nambu for the last time, please, Ken!
[Ken slaps Jane, sending her to crash on her console]
Jane But
Ken Try not to lose your minds! Dr. Nambu left precise orders to Dr. Pandra and we have to obey them.
Jane Ken
[Jimpei and Ryu lose control and start crying desperately]
Ken Feel free to fall into despair if it helps to soothe you, but we have to finish our mission. Am I clear?
Jane Yes
Jimpei Doctor Nambu! Give me doctor Nambu back!
[Ken himself has tears in his eyes and sees Nambu's images. The Phoenix keeps its course towards the Galactor base, sans Joe.

Hello Ebony! Doh I used it too, but it feels ages since I read that translation and totally forgot about the scene in "consequences"...I'm a bit of a scatterbrain at times if you haven't noticed. LOL

No more than me! We all forget things. You have to admit that it's a scene with lots of angsty potential -no wonder we both used it!
