OK, maybe it is, but it's the first time I've seen a sentence constructed like this.

Technically, this isn't proper English. What do birds make? What is a look-see, and from what or whom are we taking it?
The part that bothers you, DT, is accepted because of the tendency of native-speakers to replace "act" with "make".
When I read that sentence, I was annoyed for a different reason -- the writer was pointing out the fact that G-Force look like birds. (What -- nobody noticed that before?)
