Theatrical Movies
Hi all
I was wondering if anyone can tell me about the old movies? I was given a bunch of gatchaman dvd's and files from a friend, and am now going through them from start to finish for the first time. I saw the final few episodes on youtube a few years back so i know how it ends, but apart from that its all new to me Took a bit to get out of the BOTP mindset, but it's all smooth sailing now theres no zark
Anyways, with the collection is a file called 'kagaku ninja tai gatchaman' which is apparently a 1978 retelling? Unfortunately it has no english translation.
Also included is a BOTP 'movie' (presumably from the same era). I havent watched them yet; but can anybody give me any more info on them? Is the gatchaman movie just a retelling, with no new story or footage? And does the BOTP movie continue the BOTP story?
Online searches are fairly limited.
Thanks all!
sym
First, welcome Symmetry. You are very lucky to have been given all those files and DVD's and you are right about changing the mindset from BOTP to Gatch.
As for the movies, I am sure someone on this board will be able to help you. I am trying to remember what I read about them and I seem to recall they are a consolidation of episodes rather than a continuation of a story line.

There was a 1978 Gatchaman movie. This basically recapped the first episode, the episodes where Red Impulse reveals that he is Ken's father and dies, and the final episodes with Joe's illness and the ending at Cross Karakorum. The vast majority of footage was from the original episodes, although the music was new, IIRC.
This film was shown in theatres in Japan, and this was to 'remind' people about the show (since it had been 5 years since the original program had stopped airing) before Gatchaman II hit television.
I'm not sure about a 'BOTP movie'. That doesn't sound familiar to me.

Thanks for the replies. Well that explains the gatchaman 'movie,' so i dont feel bad for not having the english subs
As for the BOTP 'movie', i'm not sure yet either. I'm watching the lot in order, so it may be another month or so til i get to it. I've flicked through, and it seems to be a similar thing... a rehash of old eps. Tho it's def not just a redub from the 78 gatch movie; the scenes are different. And zarks voice is very different from the whiny immasculine voice i remember him having.
Will repost as i get through them.
Thanks again for the feedback.
Sym
I sorta know the BotP movie that you are talking about, but not the specifics. It too is a compilation of episodes. I don't think it was ever released in theaters and I don't remember watching it as a kid. In fact the only place I've ever seen it is on youtube.

Nice to meet you, Symmetry!
I remember watching that BOTP movie on youtube too. What I recall is that some of the violence had been put back into the episodes used, and that Zark had a completely different voice.
Tatsunokofan had supplied the info in this thread...

Thank you LB, for locating that info from Tatsunokofan. I was sure he would know about the movie.

Ok that explains a lot, i knew someone could help me. I looked all around and i could never find a release for sale. UK only and as a bonus feature, no wonder i couldnt find it.
Thanks again for the info.
I had an old video of the Gatchaman movie several years back. It was a 7th generation VHS, so the quality was awful. I could barely see what was happening at times, and I couldn't read the fan subtitles that were added. I could tell enough about it to recognize that it was the first episode, the Secret of Red Impulse episodes, and then the final episodes where all is wrapped up. The only new footage added was the arrival of Leader X on earth at the beginning and, if I recall correctly, the creation of berg Katse from twins. It's very short.
I have never heard of the Battle of the Planets film, but since it is apparently on Youtube, I may just have to check it out!

It sounds like you have been a fan for a long time, Solar Sailor! It's great to meet you! WHat brought you to Gatchamania?

James, who is a regular user around here, also posts on IMDb where I have an account. I see his posts on Gatchaman or Battle of the Planets boards a lot. Sadly, there is so little activity on the IMDb boards for this material. I asked James if he could recommend a site where a bit more was happening, and he recommended this site. I really like it so far. Definitely lots more to say, read, and do here in relation to Gatchaman!
Thanks for the welcome.

That's great! James has been absent for awhile and we really miss him hear, but I know he's still very active in the fandom.
Do you attend Comic Con? A number of us (including James and his wife) meet up there every year.

Well i've finally gotten through the lot. What a ride.
After watching gatchaman all the way through, i watched the BotP 'movie'. The club mix remix of the main tune is fairly obnoxious
It suprises me that up to 30years later they were still re-hashing early 70's footage. When Eagle Riders came out in the mid 90's (re-hash of late 70's gatchaman II and Gatchaman F), they were competing with shows like darkwing duck, x-men; while some were experimenting with CGI (remember voltron in the 3rd dimension in 98?). I doubt it ever had a chance of being as popular, running 20yo footage.
And then the BotP movie in 2002, which recycled footage from the original gathchaman from 72. 30 years old now, and still re-hashing!
I even went so far as to watch an episode of gatchaman II (with no english subs). Their new weapons and mechas were just a bit too corny for me.
Well, now i guess we just wait and see if Imagi's re-imagining ever gets completed. I'm not hopeful tho.
Thanks for everyones input.
It sounds like you had fun going through everything, Symmetry! I agree, it's interesting to note how long the show remained 'fresh' in its appearance. I think that's a testament to the genuine artistry of the Tatsunoko personnel, and how 'forward-looking' the show truly was in the visuals.
