I think that is good news. Hopefully we won't get any terrorist strikes in his name trying to martyr him.

I've been listening to the President on TV, talking about it.

I confess I never thought he'd be found! It's been nearly 10 years -I'd figured he die of natural causes out there, while still in hiding.

Yeah, I've often felt that he had already died of natural causes and Al queda buried him in a cave somewhere and kept us on a wild goose chase while laughing at us.

Hopefully this will bring us close to an end.

I'd have preferred capture and trial. "This is how WE do things."

And our judge would keep control of the courtroom, so that the guy couldn't bluster and posture.

Alive, he can't be a martyr. He could sit on his ass and rot.

Amethyst thats the first thing I thought of when I saw the news. It actually would have been better if he fell out of grace with his own people first, gone to trial for his crimes and faced justic for those he's harmed- then him being dead wouldn't have mattered as much to them. One goes another takes his place....

My personal preference is to see him dead. There is no point trying to bring him to justice, he is too dangerous an individual to keep alive long enough for a trial. Its fair to say you would not need one anyway since we all know what he did and he even confessed to the crimes he committed.

So whats the point?

Well done to those brave men and women who brought justice to the thousands killed in that scums name.

Good Riddance to him...I think he'd be a martyr to the terrorists no matter which way he went...I'm just glad he's gone.

I'm one who would normally opt for a just trial but, when thinking things out, apart from also taking into account all the past, and innocent bloodshed under his own will, I think he would have ended up executed just as in Saddam Hussein's case ... so, Bin Laden will always be a martyr in his followers' eyes, and I so hope, whilst echoing Amethyst's and Ebony's words, that this will not give rise to any further repurcussions! This is surely a blow for the Al Qaeda group, but he certainly wasn't alone, even if he were the mastermind! I'm just capable of continously praying for peace!

This way it is final with no drawn out trial to further upset his victims' families.

Regardless of how many people will now pray in his name as a martyr, those families will sleep better tonight knowing justice was done for their loved ones.

I'm normally not one who is joyful at the loss of a life, but last night when I heard the news, I almost broke into a chorus of "Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead". Yes, I know he was male, but he's been such an evil shadow hanging over the world for the last decade that it seemed somehow appropriate.

I am concerned that this will set off a whole new round of terrorist activity, in his name, but that is a chance we take in this post-9/11 world. I'd call it a calculated risk, and one worth taking to know that one of the worst mass-murderers of all time is permanently buried at the bottom of the sea.

Good ridance, and may he get what he truly deserves in the afterlife.

He may be dead but there are still bad people on the world who is still terrorizing and bloacking Peace

I have feeling that the death of Osama Bin Laden is to go form more violence in the Middle East
or
Can it be the first step toward world peace?

One thing I found interesting was that Obama said, "After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."

Wait a minute.... After a firefight? So... they had the firefight and THEN killed him? Maybe it was a Freudian slip? I don't know...

My guess is that he meant "During a firefight...".

Posted by Transmute Jun on 02-05-2011 at 14:14:

Although I guess now they're saying that Bin Laden was shot through the left eye. That smacks of a close range shot. Perhaps it *was* after. And they he was 'buried at sea'? No official pictures of proof that the guy is dead?

Conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day with this one.

That was my thought as well TJ. There is no absolute proof, one way or another. Only those involved with the fighting know what they saw, and I gather there was a live broadcast to some "higher" official, so that person could say they saw the body. But as we know people can be masters of disguise.

Another piece of news I heard, there will ALWAYS be another to take the firsts place, so I don't believe this is an end.

There could be a body, and it could make the rounds as if this were the 19th Century, and conspiracy theorists would still spew their crap.

I saw a headline that said DNA tests confirmed it was bin Laden.

BTW, the burial at sea was apparently in accordance with Islamic law.

I'm thankful to have woken up to no news of retaliation (not to say that it still won't happen).

I'm glad he is gone. Like Cep said, a trial would have been a waste of time and money, but it would have also open up the possibility of more people being put at risks. I don't know that any judge can control an extremist.

To echo a friend from high school, and Vodka, this is a triumph, but men and women from around the world are still putting themselves in danger fighting other terrorists and extremists. The time to celebrate will be when they are all home.

No the burial at sea was done because no country was willing to take (claim) his body.

What was done in accordance to Islamic law, was he was buried within 24 hours.

I can see that. It opens it up for extremist on both sides to go after where the body is buried/kept/stored.

As for UW's comment on conspiracy theories because of the "lack" of body, she's spot on.

Look at the Birther movement. Discounting two legal documents on Obama's birthplace, and producing as there evidence a foreign birth certificate that is more easily forged.

One piece of "evidence" they have one their websites is the fact that Obama and his sister were born in two different hospitals. That's not uncommon. My brother and I were born in two different hospitals. Same state, same town, different doctors, different hospital privileges.

Nothing can stop conspiracy theories. Although, if we could resurrect Earl Warren, I'm sure he'd give it a try.
