What does the word Gatchaman Translate to in english?

Is it "eagle", 'white shadow" "gforce"?

Tried Google and Babel Fish but got no clear answer and now the curiosity is nibbling at me.

It doesn't translate to anything. Tatsunoko made it up because it sounded good!

My understanding is that it's a Japanese sound (like 'bam' or 'crash') that emulates the noise made when two machines (mecha) crash together.

Of course, now I can't recall where I read that...

Yes my thoughts and prayers also. NC only got the tail end of it. It has been quite a storm season thus far. I'm fearing this summer. It looks like it will be to hot, humid and stormy is what I'm thinking.

I think James may have mentioned it a few times, but yeah, I've seen it elsewhere, too, but can't think of any place specific.

Since I recall hearing it as well, I suspect it must be on one of the "Extra's" discs in the DVD collection.

I could be wrong though, I often am after a long brain draining day like today was.

Possibly Katsesama's www.gatchonline.com?

It says:

"On October 1, 1972, Tokyo's Fuji Television premiered the very first episode. Originally dubbed "Birdman," the show's creators renamed it "Gatchaman" at the last minute. To the Japanese, the title sounded a bit like mecha smashing into each other —Gatchaan!"
