Gatchaman Episode 82: “Aim at the Crescent Coral Reef!” Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator        IP Information Go to the top of this page

[Thank you, Saturn, for the screencaps!]

Gatchaman Episode 82: “Aim at the Crescent Coral Reef!”

BOTP Episode: N/A

This episode opens with a scene of a Galactor goon wielding a welding torch in what appears to be some mecha-construction labour, while a crane hoists a large panel into place on another part of this mecha-in-progress.

This is Galactor’s mecha factory, the narrator informs us (I guess this factory replaced the one on Ghost Island, destroyed in episode 59) where, per Leader X’s instructions, “all of the iron beast mecha that were used before have been reproduced at a rapid pace.”

While we’re being told all this, we see more goons overseeing the construction, a table full of white lab coat-wearing Galactor scientists studying schematics and models.

And then we see a diagram of Jun’s shoe.

“Galactor scientist, Dr. Misuno, the man who had once invented the special radar capable of detecting the electromagnetic waves the Science Ninja Team emits when transforming, has developed small locators based on the same principle.”

And we get another visual reminder of this episode’s ties to episodes 74 and 76.

The narrator also tells us that one of these locators is being installed in every Galactor vehicle, “as well as all of the other mecha.”

We see one of these devices installed in a red sports car, and into a crab tank.

The narrator explains that Galactor hopes to “zero in on Team Gatchaman’s location and destroy the ISO,” and that “the process is now in the final stages of completion and the deadly launch is imminent!”

But now we cut to Leader X and Berg Katse.

Leader X wants to know if the mecha production is on schedule, and Katse ingratiatingly assures him that it is. Leader X goes on that in order to realize their ambitions, they must get rid of the Science Ninja Team –but they still don’t know where its base is located or their true identities.

Now Katse’s looking a lot more nervous, and he’s sweating as he bows. “Please accept my deepest apologies, Sire. My inadequacy is to blame.”

Leader X refrains from commenting on his inadequacy, instructing Katse to “put the special radar developed by Dr. Misuno to work!” now that locators have been fitted on all their re-produced mechas.

Leader X points out that the radar can’t detect anything unless the Science Ninjas transform, but once that transmission has been detected, he orders Katse to then find their base, using the “pursuit radar.”

“But it’s the Science Ninja Team we’re up against,” says Katse, “I don’t know that something like this will actually really work.”

(Ooh, Katse, don’t you remember from episode 80 how Leader X reacts to defeatist whining from you?)

“The rest depends on your skill, fool! Mind your words!” yells Leader X, his eyes turning red before his face goes all haywire.

But Katse is spared the delirium beam this time. “Yes Sire, you’re absolutely right,” Katse is saying, bowing hastily, but Leader X is gone.

“I’ve upset my Leader once again,” says Katse wearily, but then he looks up and continues “That’s all right. Just you wait Gatchaman!” He chuckles evilly.

And now we cut to a view of a city, and suddenly a mecha appears in the sky –it’s a reproduced Archeo from episode 44.

“Once again, Galactor’s scientifically superior iron beast mechas have gone on a murderous ramage!” declares the narrator as we see Archeo blast a building with its shock wave and crush another with its claws.

In fact, not only has Archeo been reproduced but so has its attack from episode 44 –it’s the same footage, reused.

“They spread all over the world,” continues the narrator, as we see terrorized civilians running in the streets in panic and getting crushed by falling debris, “and simultaneously begin their destruction. The evil hand of Galactor rains terror over the oceans, cities and oil fields!”

Some UN tanks on the ground fire at this new Archeo, but just like before –just like before- Archeo destroys them and several more city buildings.

But suddenly we see a long green mecha tail bash several UN jets out of the sky and then blast a few more with lasers. It’s the King Dragon mecha from episode 22 (and the footage here of it destroying UN jets is from that episode.)

Somewhere, Katse is watching all this havoc on a view screen and laughing triumphantly. “Come out, come out, wherever you are,” he chants, clearing referring to the Science Ninjas, “If you don’t, we’ll have to drag you out by your pin feathers.”

Now, pointing imperiously, he orders “Let’s crank up the violence out there!”

So, now we see a fleet of re-produced beetle mechas from episode 17 and they attack an oil refinery, transmission towers, and cargo ships –just like they did in episode 17!

Next, terrified people run away from a large set of windows as a mecha swoops past outside –it’s a reproduced Crab-Killer mecha from episode 54. And, just like in episode 54, it bashes the building with its tail, killing people inside as it collapses and then blasting more buildings with energy beams.

Okay, did all the Tatsunoko animators want to take vacations around the time episode 82 was being made, so a storyline was devised that would allow the reuse of lots of existing footage?

At any rate, now we see that red sports car that was fitted with a locater back at Galactor’s mecha factory. Now it’s parked on a street, a few blocks away from the chaos of screaming, panicking people and burning, destroyed buildings.

Inside, its driver is smoking a cigarette and apparently waiting for something to happen, but he looks more alert when Berg Katse appears on a screen on the dashboard.

“Where is that infernal Science Ninja Team?” demands Katse.

This man, apparently a Galactor agent, has to explain that the city is in total chaos, but there’s no sign of them yet.

But Katse hasn’t run out of patience yet. “Keep your eyes on the detector –they’ll soon show their faces,” he says.

The agent salutes, and Katse vanishes from the screen. The agent turns some dials on his detecting equipment, muttering “Come out any time, Science Ninja Team brats.”

Now, out at sea somewhere, a reproduced Gezora mecha breaks the surface (in exactly the same way it did in episode 32) and proceeds to similarly destroy a fleet of UN jets that attack it by first catching the jets’ missiles and hurling them back at the jets.

It then takes to the air and separates into its tentacles and a fast-rotating head that collides with the jets and destroys more them.

Down below, pieces of flaming wreckage are falling into the sea, and onto someone who is sleeping in a boat…

At last, we see one of the Science Ninjas! But even Ryu can’t sleep through something like this, as flaming embers begin landing on him.

He wakes up suddenly, yelling “Ow! What’s going on?” and then he looks up at the sky and gasps “Gezora!” Hastily he abandons ship and dives into the sea, just as a large piece of flaming debris lands on top of his boat and obliterates it.

Ryu swims briefly underwater, before surfacing. Continuing to swim away, he curses “Damn Galactor,” but his comic relief duty is not over yet –he also gets bonked on the head by another small piece of jet wreckage.

But suddenly we cut to someplace else, where a dinner plate has just fallen on the floor and smashed.

It’s the Snack J. Music is playing loudly and Jinpei appears to be absorbed in listening to it, but it’s Jun who says “Oh no, I broke another one.”

Jinpei is oblivious but Jun snaps at him to turn the music down, saying “It makes me feel like my head is going to explode!”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, just go ahead and take it out on me, butterfingers,” snarks Jinpei, folding his arms. But he does turn the music off.

“Peace and quiet,” sighs Jun in relief. But not for long, as she and Jinpei both realize that there’s noise going on outside and they take a look.

What they see in the city around them in flames, as the King Dragon mecha flies past.

“We fought that dragon before!” says Jinpei, as an anxious looking Jun adds “It’s Galactor! Why hasn’t anyone called us yet?”

That’s a good question really –with the level of destruction we’re seeing, you’d think that Dr. Nambu would have been informed by now, and contacted the Ninjas.

But we don’t see Dr. Nambu yet. Rather we cut to an overhead view of Utoland’s race track, where cars are zooming around at high speed. You’d think that Joe’s would be one of them, but it’s not. As the “camera” pans over to a field near the race track, we see that Joe’s car is there. And so is Ken’s plane.

Joe is tinkering with something under the hood of his car, but then he stands up and says “Okay, that should be good to go.”

Ken is likewise tinkering with his plane.

Joe strolls over to Ken, with a relaxed and friendly expression on his face that we don’t see very often. “Are you finished yet, Ken? I’m done with mine.”

Ken, tightening one last bolt, announces that he’s also done and “Everything’s A-OK with the engine too.”

“Let’s go get some coffee or something,” says Joe amiably.

Aww, it’s nice to see these two just hanging out together in that classic mode of male socialization –working on their vehicles together. Unfortunately, it’s come to an abrupt end.

Joe’s eyes widen in alarm. “What’s that noise?” he says and dashes away to the crest of a ridge. There, he sees what the noise is –the city under attack.

“The city!” gasps Joe.

The Crab Killer mecha is flying by in the sky as Ken catches up to Joe and sees what’s going on too.

“Let’s go!” says Ken. “Yeah,” says Joe, and they both run to their respective vehicles and take the air and road.

From inside his plane, Ken lifts his bracelet to his mouth “This is Gatchaman here. Galactor’s been sighted.”

Jinpei, hearing this, is already on the move himself.

As is Jun.

“All members,” continues Ken, “Rendezvous at point EX and stand by.”

Ken raises his arm and cries “Bird Go!” and he and his plane transform, while Joe, Jun and Jinpei all do likewise.

And somewhere, one of Dr. Misuno’s devices is now detecting “the electromagnetic waves the Science Ninja Team emits when transforming.” The Galactor agent who’s been sitting and waiting in the red sports car is now pleased to see activity registering on his detector.

As he watches, Ken’s G-1 jet flies past.

And it’s followed in close succession by Joe’s and Jun’s G-Machines on the street, with Jinpei bringing up the rear.

They’re not exactly exhibiting Ninja stealth here, but then, they don’t know that Galactor is tracking them.

The Galactor agent contacts Katse with the good news, “The Science Ninja Team is here –I’m hot on their tail.”

“Very good,” says Katse, and then he turns and instructs a nearby goon to “Have the pursuit radar ready to activate!”

Meanwhile, everyone is now docking with the God Phoenix (though we don’t get to find out how far poor Ryu had to swim after his boat got wrecked, to get back to his marina.)

“All right, Ryu, speed up,” instructs Ken, still inside his jet, “We’ll blast the Crab Killer with a super bird missile!”

(Hey, you’re stealing Joe’s line!)

Ryu, his face set grimly for the upcoming attack suddenly looks startled. “What do mean ‘Crab Killer’? What I saw was Gezora!”

Now Ken is startled and Jinpei adds to the confusion by piping up that what he and Jun had seen was the “fire-breathing dragon.”

“If Galactor has resurrected all of their past mecha, God help us,” says Ken.

Now finally Dr. Nambu –who’s been strangely incommunicado thus far- appears on one of the screens.

“Everyone, according to reports I’ve just received, Galactor has mobilized their entire mecha fleet and they’re running wild.”

Ken concludes that splitting up to attack them all is the way to go.

But Dr. Nambu doesn’t like this plan. “Judging from the strategy they appear to be using, I think they’re plotting something big here. I believe they are trying to set some sort of trap for us again.”

Ken scowls. “What kind of trap?”

Dr. Nambu isn’t sure, but informs them that the UN army is standing by, in defense (Oh great –that’ll do a lot good!) He instructs them to come to the Crescent Coral base, and says they’ll work on figuring out Galactor’s objective then and devise a strategy.

“Understood,” says Ken, “We’ll return to base immediately.”

You do that, Ken –the plot demands it!

The God Phoenix banks and changes course now. On the ground below, the red sports car, driving through some empty terrain, suddenly brakes and changes direction too, to follow the God Phoenix. But when the God Phoenix flies out over the sea, the car cannot follow anymore.

But as the Galactor agent watches the God Phoenix heading out to sea, he contacts Berg Katse and apprises him of this.

“All right, send those electromagnetic waves over to me,” replies Katse.

The agent turns a knob…

And his car’s detecting device begins transmitting.

Wherever Berg Katse is, he’s standing in front of what appears to be a giant radar screen.

“Excellent,” says Katse, as his equipment begins receiving the agent’s signal, “Now transmit them repeatedly and let’s find out where the God Phoenix is heading off to.”

A goon turns a dial, and Katse’s giant radar screen now comes to life.

Katse gloats that the Ninjas have walked right into his trap, then he approaches a smaller screen that’s showing an image of Gezora. He communicates with a goon on board Gezora, informing him that the God Phoenix is heading his way and to prepare to attack.

Under water now, Gezora waves its tentacles and begins to move, and also releases a squad of little crab tanks.

The little tanks all move across the sea floor.

Elsewhere, the God Phoenix, presumably nearing the Crescent Coral base, dives below the sea’s surface.

Katse is studying his giant radar screen intently, as an orange trail makes its way across it…

They’re tracking the God Phoenix now, and Katse rubs his hands together in gleeful anticipation.

Commercial break!

Under the sea, rows of fish are peacefully swimming by (probably heading to join the daily fish parade at the base) and in the distance, the God Phoenix glides past.

But now some crab tanks emerge from hiding amidst some rocks, and follow it. Inside one, a goon is observing the God Phoenix.

The goon informs Katse that he has the God Phoenix in sight. Katse orders him to keep following and says he’ll send all the mechas in that direction.

Meanwhile, on the God Phoenix, Jun is studying one of her screens.

Sounding concerned, she suddenly informs Ken that she’s detected a radio communiqué. Ken frowns and asks if the radar or electromagnetic devices have picked up anything, but Joe studies his blank radar screens and says “Everything looks normal over here.”

But the crab tanks are still following them.

Ken, “Just to be on the safe side,” tells Joe to “expand the radar’s radius.”

Well, this causes Joe to gasp and say “What the hell is that?” Everyone dashes over to see.

“That” turns out to be a swarm of little lights now visible all over the radar screens.

“It’s just a school of dumb fish!” declares Jinpei, clenching one fist. To be fair, there are a lot of fish swimming around out there.

But Jun replies, “No, it isn’t! It looks like something metallic to me.”

Scowling more fiercely now, Jinpei wonders if Galactor’s on their tail.

“It’s worse than that, guys –we’ve got a serious problem!” interjects Ryu and everyone turns suddenly to look in his direction.

The Crescent Coral base is looming large on the main view screen.

There’s a moment of tense silence as everyone realizes they might well have led Galactor all the way to their secret base.

“Bring up the God Phoenix’s surrounding on the main screen, Ryu,” says Ken, as one steeling himself for the worst.

Ryu begins flashing a series of innocuous-looking undersea images in various directions from the God Phoenix, but in one, there’s a brief flash of light visible.

“Wait!” cries Ken, “Stop there and zoom in.”

Ryu does, and what they all see now isn’t good.

“It’s a crab-shaped tank!” snarls Jinpei. “It’s Galactor’s,” adds Jun bitterly.

Now Katse, still standing in front of his giant radar screen is broadcasting to all his mechas “We’ve located the Ninja Team’s base! Make for these coordinates at once!”

Flying through the air, Archeo heads that way, followed closely by Crab Killer, one of the beetle mechas and King Dragon.

At the Crescent Coral base, the fish on parade are oblivious to the impending danger. Dr. Nambu is not.

“What?” he cries, “Galacor’s found the location of this base?”

“Yes sir,” confirms a grim-looking Ken from a screen, “You must relocate! Iron beast mechas are poised for the attack! We’ll try to stop them here, but take action now!”

Dr. Nambu wastes no time and immediately informs some scientists or engineers “We must relocate immediately! Take us deeper –Galactor is prepared to attack!”

This announcement is met with a startled “How do they know we’re here?” but the men also act promptly and scramble to various stations. Two men push buttons, as Dr. Nambu himself pulls a lever.

This ignites some large thrusters and the base begins to move…

“The Crescent Coral reef is a giant base that’s capable of moving,” the narrator explains, “without being seen by the enemy.”

But the crab tanks are still on its tail.

“But Galactor is now just around the corner,” continues the narrator. In fact, now some of the crab tanks have caught up to the base and are swarming onto its exterior.

Inside one of the tanks, a goon is yelling “Crush it to pieces! Shut down its engines now!” as all the crab tanks hammer and grab at the base with their pincers.

Ken turns to the only Ninja (besides Ryu) with an underwater-capable vehicle, and says “Scratch off those dirty fleas, Jinpei.”

(I like the subs’ more blunt language here much better –“Jinpei, go kick those annoying bastards’ butts.”)

As Jun calls “Be careful out there, Jinpei!” he runs to his vehicle.

“Jinpei’s on the job!” he declares confidently though, as he sets forth from the God Phoenix.

“Super electro-magnet away!” he calls, as his buggy launches an orb with protruding spines in the direction of the tanks.

It turns out to be quite a handy thing! Jinpei’s electro-magnet briefly glows red and then begins pulling numerous tanks away from the base, such that they all are stuck in a cluster around the magnet itself. Then it explodes like a bomb.

“Well done!” says Ken, from the bridge of the God Phoenix, but he instructs Ryu to take them up, to battle the other mechas. Ryu tries to take them above the surface, but suddenly a swath of torpedoes coming zooming towards them. Ryu is able to get the God Phoenix behind some rock formations on the sea floor and evade the torpedoes. But more torpedoes are coming and as Ryu tries to get them away, explosions are erupting all around them.

The God Phoenix pitches suddenly and Ryu goes crashing into Ken (who cries out “aughh!” in pain) while Joe fares somewhat better (it’s Jun who crashes into him).

Now we see who’s firing on them –it’s Archeo, flying through the air just above the sea. Explosions –very near misses- are still erupting all around the God Phoenix as the bombardment continues, and Ken barks “Let’s get out of here! Topside –now!”

Ryu rallies and takes to his controls again, lip curled in determination.

It looks at first like they’re going to get away, but suddenly one of Gezora’s tentacles sweeps into view.

“Damn it, Gezora’s got us!” yells Ryu, as the God Phoenix pitches again.

“Ryu, hang in there!” calls Jun encouragingly, but Gezora does indeed have them in its clutches.

“We’ve got the God Phoenix!” exults Katse, “Now we’ll use all our other mecha to destroy their base. Go!”

The beetle mecha, Crab Killer, Archaeo and King Dragon all towards the Crescent Coral base now, and King Dragon dives below the surface and begins wrapping itself around base.

As it digs in with its claws, the base shakes and frightened scientists (and Dr. Nambu), who can see it through underwater windows, stagger and fall down.

“We did it!” Katse is shouting happily, “We finally crushed them with our own hands!” He orders King Dragon to keep at it, and the other mechas to stand by above the sea’s surface.

On the God Phoenix, still in Gezora’s clutches, the Ninjas can see that King Dragon is attaching their base. Ken realizes that they have to get away from Gezora before they can defend the base, and he orders Ryu to increase power. This does cause the God Phoenix to briefly pull away from Gezora, but Gezora’s tentacles retain their grip on the God Phoenix and pull it back again.

“It’s no use!” cries Ryu.

King Dragon now pierces fully through one place on the base’s exterior and a flood of water bursts in, washing scientists away.

“Doctor, engine room 1 is flooded!” cries one scientist, to an on-screen Dr. Nambu.

“At this rate, sir, they’ll crush us all!” he continues, but as Dr. Nambu watches helplessly, a sudden burst of water engulfs the man and sweeps him away.

“Melvin!” cries Dr. Nambu, and something about the combination of the unfortunate scientist’s nerdy name and the over-the-top anguish in Dr. Nambu’s voice gets me laughing every time here. (It’s an ADVism though –in the subs he just cries “Hey!”)

Meanwhile, Katse orders a goon on King Dragon to “Finish them off!” The goon activates the orb that King Dragon holds with one of its feet.

This sends some kind of shock waves through the base that leave everyone clutching their heads in anguish.

On board the God Phoenix, Ryu is anxiously telling Ken “We have to do something,” but Ken’s reply is “We have to trust Jinpei to handle it.”

Jinpei is now speeding along in his buggy and he fires a barrage of mini torpedoes at Gezora.

By a most convenient stroke of luck, the resulting explosion causes some goons inside Gezora to lose their balance and stagger slightly, and one of them accidently pushes a lever. This causes the tentacles that had been imprisoning the God Phoenix to suddenly release their hold on it.

“Maximum power!” yells Ken, seeing their chance for escape.

Gezora manages to get one tentacle wrapped around the God Phoenix again.

But now this isn’t enough to stop the God Phoenix, and as it tows Gezora along, Ken orders Ryu to charge the King Dragon.

Ryu complies, and as they get closer Ken is calling out “Steady… steady,” but then he abruptly cries “Pull her up!”

As the God Phoenix suddenly wrenches upward, Gezora loses its grip on it –just in time for it to go crashing into King Dragon’s head as the God Phoenix gets away.

Explosions rip through Gezora and King Dragon, followed quickly by exterior breaches and incoming floods of water.

Inside the base, Dr. Nambu sees what’s happening and orders scientists to start up the base’s engines again, as he himself reactivates one of them.

“What are you doing?” rages Katse, “All units, attack at once! You imbeciles!”

He then smashes his fists down on his console.

It’s a fine, dramatic touch, but he rather undermines its effect by then muttering “Ow, that hurt,” and clutching his wrist.

Above the sea, Archaeo is trying to hit the God Phoenix (still underwater) with its shock waves while Crab Killer fires missiles (and the beetle mecha presumably does nothing).

Ryu manages to dodge most of these attacks, though one missile does hit them. But it only jars the God Phoenix and doesn’t pierce it. Jun is startled and gasps.

However, more of these missiles are hitting the base too, even as it’s trying to move away.

Some of these missiles strike and pierce the base’s engines, causing the base to tremor and Dr. Nambu and other scientists to fall down.

Now Ken is contacting Jinpei, telling him to return to the God Phoenix, and he does.

Ken orders Ryu to “keep on rising” and resurface, and Ryu yanks on his controls grimly.

And it occurs to me now that we haven’t seen or heard Joe since Gezora first grabbed hold of the God Phoenix. Jun, what did you do to him when you crashed into him?

At last, the God Phoenix is back in the air again, but now Archaeo, the beetle mecha and Crab Killer are all closing in on it.

“After them!” yells an irate Katse (where is Katse in this episode anyway –I’m still not clear on that. The mecha factory?), “And don’t bother coming back if you fail!”

Ken is staring intently at (I think) an altimeter, and apparently sensing the opportune moment, he stands and orders everyone to man their G-Machines.

This gets him some surprised looks (but at last, we see Joe again). “What are we going to do?” asks Joe.

“We’re going to attack them with Firebird Shadow Separation!” declares Ken.

Ken dashes from the bridge and the others follow.

“I’m counting on your piloting skills, big guy,” Ken tells Ryu, via bracelets, as he enters his G-1 jet.

“Just leave it up to me, I’ve got everything in hand,” declares Ryu.

“Joe and I will attack Archaeo,” we hear Ken saying as we see Jun on her motorcycle, getting ready. Then we see Jinpei buckling his seatbelt inside his buggy as Ken’s voice continues “Jun, Jinpei, each of you attack the other mecha, one by one. Joe, just land on the island safely.”

How convenient that there’s an island out here for Joe’s car to land on.

Now we see that the God Phoenix is at a very high altitude indeed –it practically looks like high orbit- but they make a steep dive downward, and then go into firebird mode.

Everyone is doing the usual straining and suffering, except in their individual vehicles.

On board Archaeo, a goon who appears to be in charge orders an attack with its shock wave, but just then the God Phoenix separates…

And it becomes five mini firebirds. One of them slices across Archaeo, unleashing explosions inside it and sending goons flying.

We see that it was Ken who attacked them, as his jet now comes out of firebird mode.

But another mini firebird also slices across Archaeo.

This time Archaeo explodes completely. This mini firebird was Joe and now he’s back in normal mode and dropping rapidly towards the sea.

But somehow he’s able to control his descent well enough that he lands on the aforementioned island.

Another mini firebird slices across the beetle mecha’s belly, unleashing more goon-killing explosions and flames inside it –in fact, a lot of nasty, goon-killing explosions. Those guys really do have it rough…

Now we see that Jun is the one responsible, as she comes out of firebird mode and extends her motorcycle’s skis in preparation for a water landing.

That just leaves Crab Killer, and Jinpei’s mini firebird attacks it and then comes out of firebird mode.

This attack results in lots of explosions, but for some reason, much less footage of dying goons.

And then Jun, Jinpei and Ken all speed along together, hopefully dodging the pieces of mecha debris that are falling from the sky.

In fact, one piece that lands in the water is immediately grabbed by a large shark, though I don’t think the shark’s going to find it very tasty.

Katse, observing all this on a screen from… wherever he is, slumps down in a chair, fists clenched, and mutters “Damn it, we were so close but screwed the whole thing up again!”

But all is not lost. Now Katse, looking less despairing and more crafty, adds “At least I was able to find out more details about their covert operations. Slowly but surely, I’m unraveling their web of secrecy, yes…”

Meanwhile, the Crescent Coral base is still on the move, leaving its previous location far behind.

“Dr. Nambu and the Science Ninja Team somehow managed to overcome their biggest crisis yet,” says the narrator, as we see Dr. Nambu and some other base personnel staring pensively out one window.

“But Galactor’s fearsome obsession has revealed,” continues the narrator as we get a close up of a brooding, chin-holding Dr. Nambu, “the location of their critical Crescent Coral Reef base, and the fact that it’s mobile.”

But now we’re seeing that all the Ninjas have joined Joe on his island.

“How will Galactor attack them next time? Will they be prepared? As the members of the Science Ninja Team stood in silence, they could clearly hear the eerie sound of Galactor’s footsteps creeping up on them ever so treacherously…”

This episode has never been one of my particular favourites, mostly I think because of all the reused mecha footage or perhaps because it follows a run of (I think) exceptionally good episodes. But, its best aspects, in my opinion, are the continuity of Dr. Misuno’s work that it contains (I always love continuity), the details it provides about the Crescent Coral base and the important groundwork that it lays for the upcoming (and also exceptionally good, I think) episodes 91 and 92.

This is an episode that was never used in Battle of the Planets, and I suspect that could be because of the possible inherent awkwardness of the repeat appearances of various mecha (Should Zark try to pretend they’re all brand new, regardless of whether they’ve appeared previously, or be forced to admit that a Spectran ship heroically defeated by G-Force was rebuilt and is attacking again?) and because of the possibly disturbing nature of an attack on Center Neptune, G-Force’s very home, (though they figured out how to get around that when using Gatch episodes 91 and 92…)

We all know why they re-used existing animation: that work takes time. Why do all-new work for a few scenes when selected old scenes will work as well? And, in the days before VCRs, who would have noticed that the attacks were recycled?

Now that Katse knows the base is mobile, he can set technicians to tracking it. I'm sure Galactor has sub-hunting technology, and can -- uhm -- borrow the existing systems of various nations. Surely they now know about that crescent-shaped island on top, which means satellite pictures. (Or, given the technology when the show was made, aerial reconnaissance.)

And we know why it wasn't adapted for BotP: that one didn't arrive in the mail. I'm sure they would have Zarked around all the inconvenient bits.

Look at that one picture of Gezora crashing into the Dragon King. Doesn't it look like Gezora should have an 'Oh, shit' word or thought balloon? Or the Dragon King should have one saying, 'Ooh, I like squid'?

(I notice that some Crescent Coral personnel are wearing one-piece outfits. Who are they supposed to be? Do they show up in other episodes?)

Great review, LB! And great screenshots, Saturn!

LB, you really pointed out all of the interesting points and inconsistencies about this episode. I'm not quite as down on it as you are, however. IMHO, it's exciting to see the King Dragon wrapped arund the Crescent Base, and the have the God Phoenix incapacitated! And in many ways, it's actually Jinpei who saved the day, not because be was the only one on the scene, but because the others were incapacitated! You don't often see that!

I agree, reusing footage is always lame, but it wasn't that much, and if you consider that the original viewers of the show hadn't been able to 'rewatch' those episodes (heck, this is even before people had VCRs) IMHO it's reasonable.

I like your comments about the image, UW! Now go make that cartoon! Poke

I can understand why they'd reuse footage like that, and I don't feel it's a bad thing, especially in the days before VCRs and DVDs, but I do think that it's always more interesting to see a new mecha than to see ones the Ninjas have already fought and defeated.

I still find myself feeling that someone was giving some thought to the episodes' content when deciding which ones would be mailed, as so many of the hard-to-adapt ones of Joe's story arc (20, 78, 81, 102-105) or ones with some potentially disturbing deaths of non-villains (13, 19, 50, 56, 64 etc) weren't used.

True! He does play a key role here. Joe (who never got to fire a single missile) and Jun had rather less to do in this one, at least until the firebird shadow separation.

Only if they knew how truly wimpy Americans were/are about children's programming. If they had, then they would not have sent some of the episodes that were adapted (for example, no Debbie trying to pound Mark in the cemetery, no Gartz murdering Mark's father, no carnivorous flowers...).

The BotP writers knew how to edit around inconvenient images. And there really weren't that many in this episode. Just have Zark talk about everyone knowing how to swim and about the emergency hatches in Center Neptune.

Well, I think the makers of BOTP wanted 85 episodes, for syndication purposes or something like that, so only 20 episodes could be unused. Unless James has info about how the episodes that came to be used in BOTP were picked, by who, and if there was any particular rationalization or if it was random selection, then it's all speculation in the end. I mean, I think episode 66 could have made a great BOTP episode...

Hi all!

There was no real plan for which episodes would be used and which ones wouldn't. Jameson Brewer and Co. pretty much dealt with the episodes in the random and piecemeal manner in which the film prints were delivered to them. They didn't know what the content of a particular episode was until they were in the process of working on it, and as far as I know, no episodes were omitted because of their content. The 20 episodes that were skipped were apparently skipped because they arrived after the production had wrapped.

Mr. Brewer talking a little about this when he was at the 1999 GatchaCon, when he was asked, "When you started working on the show, did you have any idea how many episodes it was going to run?" He responded:

"No, because at that time, nobody knew how many episodes there were. I was told originally, I think, that there would be 75. Then we found out later that there were more of them. Somebody would call and say, 'Oh, we've got 26 more films over here.' They just kept adding and adding to them.

I never knew how many there were until it was over. In fact, I heard when we were done, that there were more over there. But we were never able to get them."

I hope that clarifies matters somewhat.

James

Thank you, James! This does clarify the situation for the makers of BOTP, but is anything known about the Tatsunoko side of things, namely who was responsible for sending the film reels to Jameson Brewer and Co. and if there was any known rationale behind which ones were sent first and which ones got left to the end (too late to be used)?

I know I'm obsessed with Joe's tragic story arc, but it just doesn't feel so "random and piecemeal" that episodes 20, 78, 81 and 102-105 were in the bunch left to the very end, that arrived after production had wrapped.

If the 20 unused episodes did arrive, albeit too late to be used, is he referring here to episodes from Gatchaman II?

It's great fun to imagine how Gatch II episodes might have been adapted and used by the makers of Battle of the Planets...

My G-Force: Animated is currently under a mountain of kitty-generated mayhem, but I recall that 85 is the number of episodes of anything for syndication.

And as Jameson Brewer recalls, the producers had no idea what they would get, or how many they would ultimately have. Which means (at least to me) that they could not leave any episode unused.

Hmm. I'm having thoughts about Ep 66 as a BotP episode. Anyone want to share the pain?

Here's one way: a can filled with little tags that have episode numbers and titles on them. The staffer tasked with sending off the episodes reaches in and pulls out X number of them (X being the number in a given mailing), makes up a list, and sends it to whoever, who then makes copies from the masters.

If they knew that American children's television didn't go for story arcs or referring to previous episodes, and so forth, they would have known it didn't matter what they sent, or when. (As it is, G-Force gets armed vehicles before the SNT.)

The 'Mortal Combat' episode could be altered. A key part of Joe's character is his parents' murder. BotP did away with that completely. I'm sure a late-night scriptwriter bull session, fueled with pizza and beer, could have generated a reason for Jason's reaction to flashing lights. That episode was no more problematic than other episodes.

(To digress: I think the out-of-order sending was one reason the BotP people eliminated every reference to Big Red being Ken's father. They had no way of knowing they would get the episode 'Farewell Red Impulse', even though they received 'The Phantom Red Impulse' and 'Gatchaman Burns With Rage'. I like to think that, no matter what the constraints, they would have done a better job with Mark and Cronus if they'd known they would use Big Red's heroic sacrifice.)

Here, they mean the unused episodes from Gatchaman. Such as the one you adapted. And the last three episodes.

Since they did send 'The Wounded G2' and 'Sniper Group Heavy Cobra', there is a possibility for why the last four episodes weren't sent:

Whoever was designated to pick the episodes knew enough about American TV animation standards to realize that the Sandy Frank people would have problems with them. There's a lot of violence in them, even if there's not that much actual blood. Joe's actions are motivated by the news that he's dying. Katse swan dives into magma. Oniishi and Masaki die.

quote:
It's great fun to imagine how Gatch II episodes might have been adapted and used by the makers of Battle of the Planets...

Uh, Zark gets a redesign and becomes Piemer?

Jason was on a 'secret mission' and they had this other guy so that Spectra would think the team was complete. Except the other guy was a Spectra robot, or a G-Force decoy robot that went bad.

Although, if Gatch II eps were adapted out of order, Jason might be there in the beginning, then go on a 'secret mission', and perhaps a really lame explanation for the G2 who got a dart in the back.

No, we really don't have much information regarding that, but the piecemeal method of delivering episodes was apparently not uncommon for Tatsunoko. When we spoke with Rita Acosta about Eagle Riders, she commented about the same thing happening with episodes from Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, with the episodes arriving out of sequence and from random sources (Some came from Tatsunoko directly, some came from Italy). From what Jason has indicated, Sandy Frank had better luck when they bought a new set of Digibeta masters of Gatchaman about 10 years ago, which were used for the ADV dubs. Those tapes came in one big, complete series chunk.

quote:

I think you're looking for a conspiracy where one doesn't exist. I'll grant that there is a chance that episode #'s 103~105 were put aside, but only because of their multi-part nature (Which is why Sky Is Falling, Fierce Flowers, and Invasion of Space Center were held till the end of the series. TV Stations hated 2-part stories in their syndicated shows, because it required them to air them in the proper order. Stations preferred to be able to air any episode at any time. This has changed with the advent of barter programming and satellite feeds, something that didn't exist when BotP was airing. Curse of the Cuttlefish is an anomaly though). Episode #51 (The actual beginning of the three part 51~53 story arc) probably arrived earlier, which is why it made its way into the series separated from its companion pieces.

quote:
If the 20 unused episodes did arrive, albeit too late to be used, is he referring here to episodes from Gatchaman II?

No. Separate series, separate contracts, no intermingling allowed.

quote:
It's great fun to imagine how Gatch II episodes might have been adapted and used by the makers of Battle of the Planets...

It could have happened. Sandy Frank did approach Tatsunoko about obtaining the rights for Gatchaman II, but the notion never went anywhere. BotP lost ground in the ratings and was being dropped by too many stations to warrant adding more episodes to the mix, and Tatsunoko wasn't too happy about what had been done with Gatchaman, so they weren't sure they wanted to let Sandy Frank have Gatchaman II as well.

quote:
I recall that 85 is the number of episodes of anything for syndication.

At the time, yes it was. 100 episodes was (And still is) the ideal for off-network programs, but syndicated shows could get away with less. By the late 1980s, that number had dropped to 65 episodes, which is why Eagle Riders has only 65 episodes when 100 episodes of source material were available.

quote:
Uh, Zark gets a redesign and becomes Piemer?

Having Pimer become Zark in a new-and-improved body has long been the speculated notion of what they would have done with him. There are also those who have thought that Tatsunoko added Pimer to Gatchaman II for just that purpose, but the timing between the production of BotP and Gatchaman II rules out that scenario.

James

Gatch gives us an old view of automation as robots simply replacing humans and using their tools. Maybe that's what the creators of Gatch II thought would be the autopilot of the future: a robot handling the controls in place of a human.

Nowadays, the GodPhoenix would probably have an AI to help fly it, freeing Ryu for other tasks.

Thanks for another great recap and screencaps, LB and Saturn!

Adding to all the comments regarding the subject, sometimes, the usage of past footage bugs me a little, but, I can understand that it's a good way to reduce a massive amount of hard work involved, when necessary, especially in older times. This thing is also noticed in other anime, and even in more recent ones ... the most times I notice this use of common footage is when there are civilians running wild for their lives in the streets after some attack!

Another thing that wasn't quite clear for me, like you have commented on, LB, was why the SNT had not been informed immediately about the attacks! I find it rather awkward, for them, to find out what was happening because they had to see certain attacks with their own eyes, after a certain amount of damage had already been made!

And, after seeing the individual firebirds in this episode, I cannot but think again that it must have been a drawback for Jun to be the only one who was exposed on her vehicle without certain, additional protection! It must have been more difficult for her to endure, apart from any side effects that it might have caused her, due to direct radiation, etc!

I also chuckled on your "Melvin" line, LB, and, on seeing the screenshot of falling, flaming debris over Ryu ... if only the flaming piece of debris fell more to the right ...!!! ... sorry ... I think I'm so tired that my mind is making me say silly things!!

Jun gets a transparent shell for her mini-Firebird, but it must still be tough for her.

On this show, everything moves at the speed of plot.

As for Melvin! I'd have to actually hear it, but is it possible that they used that name because Alvin! might be copy-right infringement?
