Gatchaman Episode 31 - The Plan to Assassinate Dr. Nambu

It is a peaceful night in the city. Lights twinkle on the skyline as cars travel along a bridge.

In one of those cars, Joe is driving Dr. Nambu.

Joe notes that a 'freaky car' has been following them for awhile. Dr. Nambu wonders how this is possible.

"We'll just have to make sure that they're following us. Doctor, why don't you go ahead and put your seatbelt on?" Joe says.

So it's Dr. Nambu's habit to ride in a car without wearing his seatbelt? How reckless of him!

But before Nambu can even get his seatbelt on, Joe takes off!

See, Nambu? You need to wear your seatbelt in a car all the time! Even my six year old could tell you that!

We see the car swerving all over the road. It's interesting to note that this is some kind of funky-colored sports car, and not the G-2.

"Yep, I knew we were being followed." Joe notes, as he sees the other car in his sideview mirror, even after his little display.

The Galactor car looks like a rocket ship on wheels. I kid you not.

Of course, no one notices this rocket ship driving through nighttime traffic in the city. Noooo... just another normal day in Utoland...

The rocket pulls up alongside Joe's car.

The side window on the rocket ship lowers, and Joe is shocked by what he sees!

It's a lady with a strange blue face, and she's holding a rose in her teeth.

Yes, I know it's a Devilstar, you know it's a Devilstar, but the 'audience' doesn't. This is the first time they have seen a Devilstar.

A spinning saw blade emerges from the rocket ship. Joe pulls ahead, but it come up again.

"Doctor, take cover. This could get real ugly." Joe warns.

Joe turns the wheel, and suddenly the car is flying! It leaps into the air, right over the spinning blade rocket ship!

The Devilstar is shocked, but the rocket ship manages to pull up along Joe's other side. Of course, now the spinning blade is on the wrong side of the rocket.

But another spinning blade emerges. Shades of Grease! She's going to slice them up while they drag race!

Joe grimly contemplates the situation.

"Damn it, they've already caught up with us!" Joe curses. "That's some killer set of wheels she's got!"

The spinning blade connects with the car's rear tire, sending it rolling away.

"Get lost!" Joe shouts, as he fights for control of the disabled car.

Somehow, Joe manages to drive the car on only three wheels. But the rocket ship starts bumping into his vehicle, knocking him around again, to say nothing of Dr. Nambu in the backseat!

Joe is far from pleased by this development.

"She's lucky I'm not in my car." he thinks grimly to himself.

Finally, the rocket bumps the car enough that it nearly turns over. Joe recovers enough that it only flies through the air...

And coming to meet it is the rocket, which has now dropped its wheels and become a real rocket ship/jet plane.

Just don't ask me what happened to the Devilstar's face. I don't want to know what the transformation to 'jet plane' did to her!

Joe, driving his own flying car, is shocked to see the rocket ship coming straight at him.

The two vehicles collide, and the car goes spinning out of control, tumbling through the air...

And Joe, still manages to recover and go driving away down the bridge! What a driver!

Then Joe goes driving up the suspension cables on the bridge.

The car goes over the edge, and loses all of its other tires along the way, before it plunges into the water.

The Devilstar surveys the scene from her rocket ship.

She takes the rose from her teeth and tosses it into the water where the car disappeared.

The car is floating in the water upside down, and Joe's eyes bug out when he sees the rose approaching.

Joe presses a button, and the car turns around, transforming into a submarine. Shades of James Bond!

The rose lands on the car and explodes. The rocket ship watches from above.

But the submarine is safe! Dr. Nambu (obviously out of his seatbelt again, tsk, tsk...) moves forward to talk to Joe.

"How did you know that rose was a bomb, Joe?" Nambu asks.

"Just a lucky guess, that's all." Joe replies smoothly.

But I sense there's more to it... Wink

The rocket ship flies away, joining up with a strange circular aircraft.

Joe and Nambu arrive safely back at Nambu's villa...

Where everyone else is waiting for them.

"I'm sorry to have worried you all." Nambu says. "Thanks to Joe, I'm alive and well."

Call me crazy, but I didn't think the others looked too worried in that previous shot.

"I just wish I'd bee in G-2, 'cause I could have taken out that Galactor scum! " Joe says, as he practices his dance moves.

No, he's kicking the door shut. But he looked good, didn't he? Wink

"I can't believe they've got the cahones to come after the Doctor now too!" Joe grumbles.

"Well now we know, so we'd better keep an eye on the Doctor." Ken says.

"We'll have to try and strengthen our defenses to keep the Doctor safe!" Jun adds.

"That's a waste of time! We should attack while we can!" Joe disagrees.

But Ken thinks that they should stick close to Nambu to guarantee his safety. Joe can understand that, but he points out that the enemy is free to do more damage.

Why are his teeth so... peach?

"Or do you plan to wait around until they finally give up? 'Cause let's face it, that's not going to happen." Joe continues.

"What you talking 'bout, Joe?" Jinpei says, in his best Gary Coleman impersonation. Ryu adds that they can't leave Nambu in danger.

Joe insists that if they attack the enemy then Nambu won't be in danger, and they'll be doing more than just wasting time, sitting around. Before Ken can respond, Joe leaves the room.

"Know something? Old Joe's kind of testy here, lately." Ryu observes.

"So much for being a part of the Team!" Jinpei complains.

At that very moment, somewhere deep in the Himalayas, X is telling Katse that Nambu still lives.

Katse can't believe it. X ignores Katse's protests and tells him that Nambu is 'not only a hindrance to Galactor, but also the coordinator of the Science Ninja Team'.

"Use the Devilstars to assassinate him, if you must!" Sosai orders. And now, we finally have a name for those creepy women with the blue faces...

Katse bows and accepts his orders.

The circular ship we saw before is housed in some Galactor base. We see other women like the one who flew the rocket ship.

The women are taking orders from another woman. We cannot see her, only the back of her chair.

"As you have heard, we have been gathered to assassinate Dr. Nambu." the woman says.

"But Ma'am, he is a difficult target, because we don't know the whereabouts of his base, and even if we knew that, we don't know what kind of traps it might have." The Devilstar who flew the rocket replies.

We see a partial shot of the leader woman playing with long, blonde hair. She muses that they have to lure Nambu out of his base. In fact, the woman has already taken care of it. She turns her chair around and stands up.

"We will destroy both Nambu and the Science Ninja Team." she declares.

Back at Nambu's villa, Ken is observing the Doctor as he talks on the phone.

Perhaps Ken's afraid that the phone will somehow electrocute Nambu? Wink

Nambu tells Ken that he must go to District D on urgent business. Director Anderson just informed Nambu that there is a 'red tide' occurring at the underwater farm there. The cause is unknown, so Nambu must go to investigate.

Jun protests that this might be a trap. But Nambu says that it is his duty to investigate.

Ken suggests that the Team escort Nambu to District D in the God Phoenix. Jun is so shocked by this suggestion that all color drains from her lower lip.

Nambu replies that he will be on the transcontinental train, with an investigator sent by Director Anderson. Jinpei suddenly remembers that this train is a Maglev train.

Jun still wants to follow Nambu. I guess, in Joe's absence, it falls to her to be the suspicious one!

"You're right! What if the red tide was caused by Galactor, and it's just a trap to lure him out?" Ken agrees, taking credit for Jun's suspicions. "Let's make a plan!"

"Ken, shouldn't we call Joe?" Jun asks.

"Huh? Why should we call Joe?" Ken wants to know. "Joe is... on his own."

Clearly Ken resents the fact that Joe stormed out of there. Or maybe that Joe was the one who got to be the hero and save Dr. Nambu's life.

Joe is on his own. He's race at the track. So much for 'going out to attack Galactor'. The narrator informs us that Joe is 'racing G-2 around the track at high speeds' to 'ease his frustration'.

As he is racing, Joe remembers...

He sees sun sparkling on the water. The silhouettes of a man and a woman fall down as gunshots ring out. The image clears further, and Joe recalls the man and woman collapsed onto a table at the beach. There is a pistol in the man's hand. A young Joe rushes up to the table.

Joe hears something, and turns around.

It is a Devilstar, like the one who attacked Dr. Nambu. She has a rifle slung over her shoulder.
Joe grabs the gun from his dead father's hand.

He aims it at the woman.

Young Joe approaches. The woman throws a rose from her hand, into the sand nearby.

The rose explodes...

Joe is brought back to reality as he sees another explosion. This one is on the track, in front of him.

Joe really needs to brush his teeth more. They've gone all peachy again.

Unable to stop his speeding car so quickly, Joe drives by the spot, where there is now a burning car.

A young woman is lying on the ground beside the car. Joe stops and gets out of the G-2, running over to the woman.

He picks her up, asking if she is all right, then runs away from the scene, as the burning car explodes behind him.

Joe surveys the scene. There's nothing left for him to do here!

The girl is sitting in his passenger seat, somewhat dazed.

She gives a start.

"Hi there. Glad you're okay." Joe says calmly, as if this were an everyday kind of occurrence. "I'll take you home if you give me directions."

Of course, Joe doesn't stop to worry about whether or not the girl might be distressed to see her car destroyed, or be nervous to be in the car of a strange man.

"Do you race that circuit often?" Joe asks casually as he drives.

"Only when I'm really irritated. Racing always makes me feel a lot better." the girl responds.

"Yeah, me too. The best thing to do when I'm stressed is just jump in the car and drive." Joe agrees.

I guess this passes for a brief flirtation, especially since this whole 'girl who races' thing must be bringing up memories of Lucy (only 2 episodes ago) for Joe.

As Joe drops her off, the girl suggests that maybe she can race Joe at the track sometime. Of course, she doesn't mention that her car was just destroyed!

Joe agrees, and they make a 'date' to meet at the track this time tomorrow.

"Sure, Babe, but I'm not going easy on you!" is Joe's response. Is this guy smooth or what?

As the girl leaves, she approaches a strange woman standing on the step.

Okay, I'll 'give it away' in case you don't know... this is the female Katse. My son, seeing this, asked if the 'left' side was the 'boy Katse' and the 'right' side was the 'girl Katse'. Because the left side had short hair. Well... he almost has Katse's true nature down... Wink

Back to the story... the young woman apologizes, telling the woman that she's sorry, and she didn't mean to be late for work. The woman slaps the girl.

Joe is shocked to see this.

"Man, that dame is a freakshow!" Joe mutters, before he drives off.

If only he knew...

Joe drives back to Nambu's villa. He arrives to find it empty. He is so surprised by this that his eyes grow to twice their normal size!

"Looks like they all split the scene without me!" Joe says to himself.

So... he decides to take a nap.

And as he tries to sleep, he remembers the deaths of his parents again.

"You guys don't understand just how much I hate Galactor." Joe thinks to himself. "I watched them kill my parents right in front of me."

Joe looks up, and he sees a feather shuriken stuck into the map on the wall.

Joe grabs the feather, noticing that it is a rail map for the transcontinental train.

"Ken, no!" he shouts.

At the train station, Jun, Jinpei and Ryu are seeing Dr. Nambu and Ken off on the train.

Ken tells the others that he is accompanying Dr. Nambu, and he is counting on them to 'do the rest'.

A strange female voice calls Dr. Nambu's name. It's the freaky woman who slapped the girl in front of Joe!

She claims to have been sent by Director Anderson. Nambu appreciates that she will be guiding him to District D.

Jun and Jinpei goggle.

"Wow, that woman's huge!" Jinpei exclaims.

"Shhh! She can hear you!" Jun reminds him.

"We should be going, Doctor." the woman says, smiling strangely.

And we cut into a commercial break, with a blast of suspenseful music!

When we come back from the commercial break, the narrator explains to us that a Maglev train operates using super-conducting magnets to float above a solid surface. It runs long distances at speeds of over 300 miles per hour.

Jinpei and Ryu admire the train.

"Don't just stand there, you guys! It's time for us to take action!" Jun reminds them, snapping her fingers. There's no question who's in charge right now!

And off they go.

On the train, Dr. Nambu comments that it is so fast, the city seems to be 'disappearing'. The 'investigator' woman says that once they leave the city, there's not much to look at until they reach District D. That's not exciting news for Ken, who already looks bored stiff.

Nambu remarks that he didn't realize District D was so isolated. Ken thinks to himself that the isolation gives Galactor a better chance to attack Dr. Nambu. So what does Ken do?

A monkey dance!

Okay, no, he gets up and leaves. That's actually not as smart as doing the monkey dance, because he's leaving Nambu alone. But off he goes.

The 'investigator' woman asks about the 'young man' traveling with Nambu.

"Oh, he's my assistant test pilot." Nambu replies blithely.

"That's strange…" thinks Ken, who has apparently heard the exchange. "She's asking like she recognizes me."

Ken leaves and heads into the next train car. Nambu appears to be sleeping, and the woman gets up and leaves as well.

Ken is standing and looking out at the passing scenery, thinking that he has to stay 'good and frosty' for Galactor's attack.

And the attack is coming. We see the strange circular ship hovering above the train tracks.

"This is our chance, Ladies." the 'investigator' woman's voice comes over a speaker inside the ship. "I will take care of Nambu. The rest of you, go after the Science Ninja Team."

The woman's voice then specifically asks for Devilstar Number 2. It is the blonde Devilstar who piloted the rocket ship. Ooh... she's 'Number 2', just like somebody else... dun dun dun...

"You aren't comfortable being a member of Galactor yet." the woman tells Devilstar Number 2. "It's Galactor law that in order to protect our secrets, the children of our members are forbidden from leaving Galactor. You have no choice. Therefore, go forth and kill the Science Ninja Team with the techniques your mother taught you. Keep attacking until you have defeated them all."

So now we have a glimpse into the reasons why Joe's parents were killed by a Devilstar...

The woman is broadcasting from a transmitter on her coat, while she rides the train.

Five rocket ship jets (identical to the one that attacked Joe's car in the beginning) are launched from the circular ship.

Ken is startled to see these jets flying above the train.

"There they are!" he exclaims, just as...

Ken has been pistol-whipped from behind by the mysterious woman! She flips the gun around, pointing it at the unconscious Eagle...

A shot is fired...

Meanwhile, the five rocket jets land on a bridge. They jump out of their ships, lowering themselves down the supports.

They affix something to the bottom of the bridge, then climb back up to their rocket jets.

It's a bomb! Devilstar Number 2 lights the fuse.

But the G-4 appears on the horizon. Inside, Jinpei wonders why Ken was so worried. After all, the Swallow is on the lookout!

As the rocket jets take off, Jinpei moves out to the front of his mecha, throwing out his bolas.

The bolas snuff out the fuse, so that it is no longer lit. Jinpei catches his weapon in a smug fashion.

He contacts Jun, telling her that Galactor is headed her way.

So Jun is off!

Literally. She drives off of a cliff...

As she does this, the G-4 leaves the bridge, not noticing that the fuse has relit...

Oh, the suspense! Ken unconscious and shot at, Jun driving off a cliff and Jinpei leaving the bomb without seeing it relight...

Ken is lying unconscious, but there are two large holes in the floor next to him.

The holes grow wider and become a major break in the train. A third gunshot disconnects the train car from the one behind it.

Ken chooses this moment to wake up (good timing, Ken), only to feel the strange woman's boot on his back.

She shoves him between the cars, but Ken manages to grab hold of the next one, instead of falling out to the tracks rushing by below.

"It's you!" Ken exclaims.

"We have no use for you, young man." the woman sneers. "Galactor is taking Nambu into custody."

Ken reaches back, trying to grab ahold of the other part of the train...

And the fuse on the bridge is still going!

The train moves onto the bridge, and finally the last connector comes apart. The train is now split in two! Ken is holding onto the wrong side, and the Galactor woman laughs as she zooms away from him.

The second half of the train slows on the bridge... and the bomb explodes!

Think in the BOTP version Zark will have everyone evacuated in time?

The noise wakes up Dr. Nambu, who comes face to face with a gun! Three goons are surrounding him.

Notice how the rest of the train seems to be suspiciously absent of people? And who's driving this train anyhow?

"So, my assistant was really a member of Galactor!" Nambu deduces.

"That's correct, Dr. Nambu." the woman laughs, as she reenters. "We're sending you straight to Hell in this super-train!"

"All I have to do is call one of my subordinates and you're a dead man." she smirks at Nambu. "But that would be incredibly boring. Please sit down. I'll guide you to the Gates of Hell myself."

And here's a good hint that the woman is actually Katse... she's playing Before I Kill You, Mr. Bond.

"You got all of these innocent people mixed up in this, just to kill me?" Nambu asks, surprised.

Um, what innocent people? The train is deserted! Well, there are the ones who died on the other part of the train when the bridge exploded, but Nambu doesn't know about that yet.

"That was the only way we could get to you." the woman explains, as the train moves into a tunnel. Oh yes, and she almost forgot to mention that the Maglev train is running blind. So there isn't any driver!

"What? You mean you killed the conductor?" Nambu is horrified. Wait, didn't he just already mention the other 'innocent people'? I guess killing a single conductor is worse than a whole bunch of innocent people.

Without warning, the lights go out. The woman gasps in surprise.

"I guess my subordinates still haven't figured out all of the Maglev's controls." the woman says, as the train emerges back into the sunlight. But she's not speaking to Dr. Nambu anymore...

Gatchaman has taken Dr. Nambu's seat!

The woman jumps backward to the next row of seats, shouting Gatchaman's name. She recognizes him!

"Looks like you're the one riding the rails in this crazy train now, huh?" Ken says cockily.

It's a showdown!

Nambu clearly has no doubts as to who will win. He looks very cool and confident, doesn't he?

"If you shoot, you'll hit your men!" Ken warns the woman. Clearly he has no idea to whom he's speaking.

One of the goons goes after Gatchaman, using his gun as a club.

Needless to say, it only takes Ken about three seconds to beat up those three goons. Two of them are kicked to the back of the car where they fall out of the moving train and off a cliff.

Cut from BOTP:

And back to the Swan... she is riding her motorcycle down to the tracks, right where the rocket jets are passing by!

Jun chases after the Devilstars!

She somehow manages to jump up her motorcycle and ride over the wings of the rockets.

This causes the last two rockets to spin out of control, crashing and burning.

The Devilstars, seeing that Jun won't give up, race on. Two of them stop and destroy themselves, taking out the track in a fiery blaze. Jun's path is blocked!

Jun is horrified to realize that they killed themselves just to follow Galactor orders.

The Swan turns, only to see the train rushing at her!

On top of the train, Ken is facing off with the strange woman.

"Look Gatchaman, I can see the Gates of Hell from here!" the woman laughs, before flipping off of the train and onto her waiting ship.

Her escape is pretty spectacular… another thing ‘in common’ with Katse.

Jun has to zoom out of the way to avoid being hit by the train!

The train crashes off of the ruined edge of the bridge and into the burning swamp. Nambu is wishing he had a seatbelt.

The train plunges into the water, but there is no sign of Ken or Nambu.

Jun and Jinpei stare anxiously at the spot where the train disappeared.

Strangely, they do nothing.

But there's a reason for that. The God Phoenix bursts up from underneath the swamp waters, and inside the dome are Ryu, Ken and Nambu. Nambu isn't even wet!

Note that Ryu is still in his piloting chair. I don’t think I’ve seen this since the first episode!

"Made it just in the nick of time!" Ryu breathes a sigh of relief.

"Well, everything went as planned, and everyone's still okay." Jun comments.

"But what about those blockheads that got away?" Jinpei wants to know.

Blockheads? More than one?

Yes, indeed, besides the mysterious woman, one lone Devilstar is driving down the track in her rocket ship jet. It's Devilstar Number 2! She sees something up ahead.

It's Joe, waiting for her on the G-2.

“Just as Ken said." Joe thinks to himself.

Is that a drop of poison I see drooling from the corner of his mouth?

The Devilstar stands up in her moving vehicle, preparing to throw a rose at Joe.

"It's that rose... that rose that killed my mother and father!" growls Joe.

The Devilstar throws her rose, and Joe throws his shuriken. The two meet mid-flight...

The force of Joe's throw sends the rose backward, and the shuriken pins it to the Devilstar's abdomen.

Even though she is not at the controls, the Devilstar’s rocket jet takes off, flying over the G-2.

Joe's hand is still outstretched, from throwing the shuriken. It's clear from his face that he is wishing that this was the Devilstar who killed his parents.

The Devilstar's mask falls off, and we see that Devilstar Number 2 is the same girl Joe rescued at the race track earlier.

But rather than pull the soon-to-explode rose bomb from her body, the girl chooses to philosophize.

"Why? Why don't the children of Galactor have the power to escape their fate?"

"I was so looking forward to tomorrow's race, Joe. Goodbye..."

And with that, the rose bomb explodes, along with her rocket ship jet.

Interesting that her last thought should be of Joe, and not of Alan... but I'm getting a few episodes ahead of myself. Wink

Later that evening, Joe meets up with the other members of the Science Ninja Team.

"Well, I guess I'll see you guys tomorrow." Joe says nicely.

Ooh, the moonlight has turned his number 2 blue...

"What's your trip?" Jinpei harps. "Think you're too good to hang out with all of us, now?"

"No, I have a promise I've got to keep." Joe explains, as he leaves.

"He sure is acting strange." Jun comments.

"No, I think he's just fine." says clueless Ken. "The case is closed now, so Joe can do whatever he wants."

"Kind of a strange coincidence that Joe knew exactly where to find Galactor, huh?" Ryu comments.

"Ken!" Jun exclaims, figuring something out. What I don't understand is why she's so PO'd about this.

"Don't look at me, Jun!" Ken laughs. “He's a member of the Science Ninja Team, so maybe he was led there by his incredible intuition."

"Now let's split!" he declares, offering Jun his hand.

And the four ninjas go off to the God Phoenix.

The next day, Joe sits alone at the racetrack, waiting for the nameless girl who will never come. But the narrator tells us that Joe feels 'appreciated' when he thinks about Ken's reaching out to him.

So... how did Joe know that it was Ken who left the shuriken in the map?

And Joe sits there reflecting as Speed Racer goes by...

Okay, James already explained to us that it's not Speed Racer, but it still looks that way to me. Wink

Lay to rest your horrible past! Fight, Condor Joe, for the sake of world peace.

And the God Phoenix flies overhead, off into the sunrise.

BOTP Episode 71 - The Galaxy Girls

We begin the episode with a shot of Center Neptune, where Zark monitors the galaxy for signs of enemy invaders from outer space. Inside, there is a 'very irritated robot'. Zark is trying to cope with a malfunction in the 'reference voltage generator of the synchronous image amplifier'. Zark mispronounces 'synchronous'. *Snerk*

Since we're not as smart as he is, Zark dumbs it down for us. Nothing is working right, and at a time when Zark is practically alone 'here, at the Nerve Center'.

He's so nervous he's sweating. Look, a shiny drop of sweat on his forehead!

Well, I don't know if it's sweat, but it's a sparkle of some kind. Weird. I guess Zark is supposed to be all shiny...

Why is Zark alone? Well, the entire G-Force Team is heading for the 'Mountain Retreat Headquarters' for a few days, even Chief Anderson!

And everything is broken! Why, that evil fiend Zoltar could be planning... well, Zark isn't sure. But if Zoltar were up to something, Zark wouldn't know a thing about it!

1-Rover-1 barks at Zark, presumably telling the Tin Can to get his head out of his metal posterior.

Zark tells 1-Rover-1 that the dog is not programmed for electronic repairs. But now that he thinks about it, Zark wonders if Rover could be adapted to works as an 'electronic repair dog'.

"Hey, how would you like to work for a living?" Zark asks.

1-Rover-1 is so disgusted that he just walks off.

"I don't think that idea went over too big." Zark surmises. Gee, Zark, what gave you a clue?

Zark points out that he could radio Chief Anderson, but that would be an admission of weakness. Instead, Zark will handle this all by himself.

Meanwhile, Jason is driving Chief Anderson in a car. Jason has just spotted a car following them, and Anderson agrees.

"That's a strange-looking car. Hang on back there, Chief, and I'll see if I can lose it!" Jason says calmly.

Chief Anderson falls over attempting to put on his seatbelt, but they don't lose the rocket ship following them. The rocket ship pulls up alongside Jason's car, and the spinning blade comes out.

"Man, I've got to get out of here!" Jason says. But his voice doesn't sound very excited. He jumps his car over the rocket ship and speeds away, but the rocket catches up. The second spinning blade comes out.

"I feel like a can of sardines about to be opened!" Jason says. Groan...

The tire comes out, and the rocket ship rams into the side of the car.

"She's really out to finish us off!" Jason thinks. Gee, Jason, what was your first clue?

The car flips over and flies into the air. The rocket ship turns into a jet and rams it head on. Jason recovers, and drives right up the suspension cables of a bridge and into the water. Once in the water, he turns the car into a submarine and narrowly avoids a rose bomb.

Once the excitement has died down, Chief Anderson asks Jason if he got a good look at the driver.

"Yeah, and I hope I never see her again!" Jason quips.

Anderson and Jason show up at the Mountain Retreat Headquarters.

"About time!" exclaims Mark.

"Sorry we're late." Anderson says emotionlessly. "We had a slight interruption on the way here."

"Nothing to speak of." Jason says casually, kicking the door closed. "Only a masked woman in a rocket ship who tried to kill us with a magnetic exploding rose that she carried in her teeth."

"And she had six long, wavy arms, right?" Mark jokes.

"With a bunch of daisies in every hand." Princess adds. "And then, you woke up!"

"All joking aside, folks, it really happened!" Jason insists.

"Come on, Jason, you've got to be kidding." Mark says. "If you're not, then we've got a real problem on our hands. And whenever there's a problem..."

"Look for Zoltar." Jason finishes for him. "He's got more tricks than an Oriental Magician's Convention." Very strange choice of words there, Jason. Erm3

"I think the Spectrans are at it again." Jason concludes. "But if we're having another invasion, why hasn't Zark picked it up?" Great. Now even Jason is convinced of Zark's infallibility! Sigh...

"Gremlins?" Keyop suggests.

"He's been complaining of problems with his image amplifier." Tiny puts in.

"Then I suggest somebody listen to Zark's complaints." Jason declares. I think I'm going to be ill...

"All we need is to have Zoltar on our necks, and no warning system." Jason says in disgust, walking out the door.

"Oh boy." Mark mutters.

"Wow, just the thought of Zoltar gets Jason." Tiny says. I don't get it... the thought of Zoltar gets Jason... what? Huh?

"Me too!" Keyop burbles.

On Spectra, the Luminous One is telling Zoltar that he doesn't question Zoltar's loyalty... but his best plans are always ruined by Zoltar's incompetent lieutenants! Zoltar replies that his own sister will lead this new mission. The Great Spirit is happy to hear that Mala will be in charge.

"She is everything I could wish for!" the Luminous One declares. "Beautiful, crafty, remorseless... and totally dedicated to the survival of Spectra!"

Wow. I think the Luminous One is in love...

"In Mala's hands, the mission cannot fail. You could not have made a choice that pleased me more!" the Great Spirit says.

Zoltar bows.

Inside the circular ship, Mala lectures the strange woman who attacked Jason's car.

"You have failed in your mission, Lana!" Mala says. "Anderson and his driver have not been eliminated!"

Mala's voice is clearly done by Janet Waldo, but unlike the other female voices on this show, it doesn't really sound like Princess. It sounds deeper, and harsher.

Lana protests. Mala must be mistaken. There's no way they could have survived the detonation of her rose.

"Do not dispute me, Lana! I am never mistaken!" Mala lectures.

So Lana apologizes.

Now that she's gotten what she wants, Mala is more forgiving.

"It is not your fault." Mala says, stroking her long, blonde hair. "But I see now that I must attend to these small details myself!"

Mala orders Lana to go and prepare the explosives for tomorrow's mission.

I have to give Sandy Frank credit here. Both Mala and Lana have names. That's more than they did in Gatch.

Back at the Mountain Retreat Headquarters, Anderson is on the phone, saying that he will be on a train, and G-Force will keep close surveillance. It seems that Zoltar has threatened to blow up the Solar Express on its maiden voyage. The Solar Express is the first monorail to circle the globe.

So... how does it go over the oceans...?

Anderson says that there are thousands of points susceptible to sabotage on the Solar Express route.

The Chief is going to make an educated guess as to where the attack will be, but Mark beats him too it. They both suspect the long bridge near Sheldlack. Anderson says that Mark will accompany him on the train while everyone else will 'cover' them.

Keyop pities Jason, who will be left behind on this mission. Princess wonders if they have time to locate him.

"Not if we have to leave right away." says Mark. 'Besides, somebody has to hold down the fort here."

"He's not going to like it." Princess points out.

"Can't be helped." Mark says.

We see a shot of a long, winding road through the mountains. Jason is driving his car through the area, and he has a passenger.

"I don't usually pick up hitchhikers, Miss...?"

"Lana Hill." the girl next to him replies. This one does sound a lot like Princess.

"I don't usually thumb, but my car broke down." Lana explains. That's a bit of a simple explanation for your car exploding because you crashed while racing... but of course, that 'didn't happen' in BOTP.

"Then it was lucky I came by when I did." Jason says. "There's not much traffic at this hour."

Um, Jason, it's broad daylight. What hour is it?

Jason pulls up at a large building and Lana gets out.

"Thanks for everything, Jason." she says. "You've been very kind."

"My pleasure." Jason says smoothly.

"I'd like to see you again, but it's impossible." Lana says.

"Goodbye then, Lanie. And good luck!" Jason says, not the least bothered by this brushoff.

And yes, he says 'Lanie', even though she clearly said her name was Lana.

Lana walks up to Mala, standing outside the building. She apologizes for being late, and explains that her car broke down. Then she walks into the building. Yep, no slap. But Mala does stare creepily at Jason.

"That's a mean-looking woman." Jason says to himself, before leaving.

Jason returns to an empty Mountain Retreat Headquarters. He realizes that something has come up, but there's no note, so he just lies down on the couch.

"I'll check with Zark. He'll know what's going on." Jason thinks to himself. Gag...

Jason spots the feather shuriken in the map, and deduces that everyone must be at the Solar Express... without him.

Everyone is gathered on the train platform.

"Wasn't there supposed to be someone from Public Relations to meet you here, Chief?" Mark asks.

"There was, and there is." says Mala, walking up. "How do you do? I'm Mala Latroise. Welcome aboard the Solar Express."

"She looks scary!" Keyop says, without a trace of burble.

Just as Jun did, Princess shushes Keyop, saying that Mala might hear him.

Mala and Anderson agree that this should be a 'very interesting trip', and as Mala turns back, the 'scary' music sounds...

After a commercial break, Zark is pacing.

Zark has just had a call from Jason. Jason is very upset, because he was left behind by G-Force.

"Now he knows how I feel, all the time!" Zark says. Groan...

Zark knows that robots aren't supposed to feel, but his cogno-capacitors pulsate furiously sometimes. Like right now, when he thinks about being aboard that fantastic Solar Train. He flies over to his control panel.

Fortunately, his image amplifier is behaving itself right now. Now he can keep an eye on the train's progress. Zark has a sensation, deep down in his trigatron, that Zoltar is about to spring one of his evil surprises. Gee, could that be because Anderson already told us that Zoltar was going to attack the train? Sheesh...

The train departs, and Princess, Keyop and Tiny run off.

On the train, Anderson comments that Mala must find her work fascinating.

"You have no idea how fascinating." Mala smirks.

So Chief Anderson... invites her to dinner. Ooh... Anderson is a player! Too bad he's trying to 'play' Zoltar's sister!

Mark is pretty uncomfortable with the idea of being Anderson's 'wing man', so he heads off without a word.

"Your young friend doesn't like me." Mala observes. Anderson assures her that she must be mistaken.

But she's not. Mark thinks to himself that she 'gives him the creeps'.

Later, Mala walks off, while Chief Anderson snoozes.

Mark thinks that Mala reminds him of someone, but he's not sure who.

Mala is remotely ordering her women on the circle ship to take the explosives to the bridge at Sheldlack, as the train is approaching it. Mala tells Lana that she will be in command. Mala has forgive her for allowing 'that young man' to bring Lana to their Headquarters.

"Be sure that you merit my forgiveness, Lanie." Mala warns. "There must be no errors!"

Mala says that she has something else to do. Dun dun dun...

The girls go out in their rocket jets to set the explosives on the bridge.

As we watch this, Zark's voice comes in, telling us that his equipment is working again, and he doesn't like Mala either. As a precaution, he has had all of the other passengers removed at the last stop. Yeah, that won't make her suspicious. Riiight...

Mark gasps as he sees the rocket planes in the sky go by. But Mala knocks him out before he can do anything about it. There is no gunshot, and we don't even see Mala holding a pistol.

As the bombs are being set on the bridge, Zark contacts Keyop and tells him to investigate.

Keyop shows up and thinks he snuffs out the fuse. Then he calls Princess and warns her that the bridge is in danger.

The fuse lights up again...

The train is cracking apart underneath Mark's unconscious body, while a gunshot unbolts the train cars. Hey, where did the gun come from? Zark's voice comes out of Mark's communicator, urging him to wake up.

And Mark does wake up (thanks to Zark, of course... bleargh...) and jumps when he sees Mala about to kick him off the train. So, did Mala just hear Zark's voice coming out of Mar's communicator? Did Mark blow his secret identity?

Not caring about his own identity, Mark asks who Mala is.

"You mean you haven't guessed? I am Zoltar's sister, Mala!" she declares proudly.

"There isn't a chance in the world you'll get away with this." says Chief Anderson's voice. But we don't see Anderson. We just see Mark hanging off the train, and trying to crawl back to the other side.

Mala begs to disagree. Everything is going exactly as she planned.

The last connector on the train breaks and Mala's train shoots off, leaving Mark behind, just as the bomb goes off.

Ooh, we get to see the full destruction of the train, probably because Zark evacuated everyone at the last stop.

Mala and Anderson are standing, surrounded by goons. Mala tells Anderson that Spectra cannot let the Solar Express go into operation. It would decrease the Earth's vulnerability to invasion and conquest.

Really? A monorail???? Decrease the Earth's susceptibility to invasion and conquest???

Can anyone explain that one to me?

Mala asks if Anderson knows why she was selected for this mission.

"Because of your great warmth, gentleness, and love of humanity." Anderson replies. Strangely, both he and Mala are sitting in the seats, now.

"Amusing." Mala notes dryly. "I believe you know my brother, the Great Zoltar of Spectra?" she asks the Chief.

"Zoltar? Like brother, like sister." Anderson mutters. Guess you won't be having that dinner date after all, Chief!

The light go out, and Mala wants to know what is wrong. But when the lights come back on, Mark is there.

One of the goons swings at Mark, but he dances around on the ceiling (not hitting anybody).

Meanwhile, Zark contacts Princess, telling her to intercept the rocket planes that are intercepting the Spectran agent on the train.

Princess drives over the wings of the planes, and 2 of them are destroyed. Yep, with actual people inside. Wow. I'm traumatized...

The other planes stop, and then there's an explosion. It's not entirely clear what happened. But the bridge is destroyed, and Princess is distressed because there's no way she can stop the train.

On the train, Mala jumps off of the roof and is picked up by the circle ship.

Zark contacts G-Force, telling everyone to take position on the bridge.

The train crashes, and sinister music plays. JMHO, but this sinister music makes the whole scene much more nerve-wracking than in Gatch.

But the Phoenix surfaces and Mark and Anderson are safe.

"You can always count on Tiny to be there when you need him." Princess says, in Birdstyle. Keyop thinks Tiny will get a medal for this one.

Suddenly, it's nighttime and Princess is standing next to Mark, and they're in civvies.

"So Zoltar wins again." Princess says sadly.

"For the moment, yes." Mark admits. "But the bridge will be replaced, and the train can be replaced. You'll see."

Tiny says he's hungry, and Mark agrees that they shouldn't 'cry over spilled milk'. They have better things to do.

And they head off to the Phoenix, although Jason is nowhere to be seen.

They must be going for a long time, because suddenly it's day again, and the Phoenix is still flying. Boy, Tiny must be ravenous now!

Zark's voice breaks in to tell us that despite what Princess said, Zoltar really didn't win. No one was injured in the attack on the train, and the evil forces of Spectra have been driven back to their home planet. And most important, Cheif Anderson and every G-Force member is well and safe.

And suddenly, badly-drawn Mark shows up!

"We're here, Zark!" Mark announces.

Badly-drawn Princess shows up too!

They're just checking in to see if Zark has all of his controls in working order.

Zark says that it's 'all ticking smoothly again' and Princess comments that she hopes Zark can do the same for the Solar Express train. Oh, it's a piece of cake for Zark. He can have it operating again in no time. Yuck...

"Mark, I really was worried about you on this last mission." Princess says, out of the blue.

"You, worried about me? Why?" Mark wants to know.

"Because, I care for you, Mark." Princess says.

"Gee, Princess, I go for you too, but you shouldn't worry about me." Mark replies. Okay, tell me, what does it mean when he says that he 'goes for her'?

"I'm quite proficient at taking care of myself." Mark adds. Then he decides to explain some more.

"I mean, I like the fact that you're thinking about me, but I don't want you to worry your pretty face!" Wow. I just don't know what to say, here.

Princess does.

"You really think I'm pretty?" she asks, in an extra-high, girlish voice.

1-Rover-1 barks.

"See there?" Mark laughs. "Even 1-Rover-1 thinks you're the best-looking girl in the whole solar system!"

And we don't get to hear Princess' response, because the episode ends.

Great recap! This, like ep 27, is one that I can actually remember well from BOTP. Seeing the Gatch version was a revelation for me -and I was shocked at just how many cool scenes Jason had been denied!

Well, she's got the same hairstyle in the first two (though not quite the same colour) and she's got the same eyes in the last two (and maybe in the first one as well -if we could see them). And, she's unusually tall and thin in every case. I can't recall if anyone except Ryu and Jinpei saw her in episode 29, but I think that if Jinpei didn't recognize her in episode 31, he (and Jun) should have recognized her by episode 32 -there was enough similarity, I think!

I'll admit that I might well spend too much time studying Joe's face, but in this episode it always seemed to me that there must have been someone new drawing him in a lot of the scenes. Another case of an "intern animator" perhaps.?

I love your son's remark about Katse's two halves -that's really a very clever suggestion!

Another thank you and great job TJ!

The similarity of the female commanders is quite noticeable especially prominent face features like the eyes and the lips which could have easily captured Jun and Jinpei's attention when they were captured.

Also did you notice the similarity of Joe's eyes to Ken's in the following pic and the third one posted by LB?

Your son's comment re Katse made meROFL 2 ! It is always a pleasure and surprise hearing such innocent and quite simple, intelligent statements come out from kids' mouths!

I too was thinking the same thing about Joe's eyes.
I think the person who was drawing them got the wrong page that shows their different features (Cloud is thinking of the examples Katsesama drew.) Wink Somebody handed over the Ken sheet when they should have passed the Joe one. Uhoh3

I think you guys are right about the different animator for Joe in this episode.

Glad you liked my son's comment! I thought it was pretty funny... straightforward, and 'almost' right!

LB, I agree that Jinpei and Jun should have been suspicious about the woman being mugged in episode 32... as they had just seen her shortly before in episode 31!

Thank you! Great recap!

This was always one of my favorite episodes. I even liked it in GOS (it had more G-2 footage than BotP).

As for Jun being pissed at Ken in the end, remember when she wanted him to include Joe before they left, Ken blew her off. Then he does it on his own. I'd say Ken's lucky she didn't smack him like she does Jinpie.

Amethyst has a good point there but, in defense of Ken, although it may seem a selfish act, as a leader he had to give an example to all other team members in order not to give them the tendency of acting like Joe in the future. His respect for Joe had then taken the supremacy but he still kept it secret from the others, even when questioned by Jun at the end, to keep his point! On the other hand, it must have been a bit frustrating to Jun ... it would have been to me!

And she had seen Jun and Jinpei at the maglev train station, albeit briefly!

I suppose it's possible that the writers were aware that this was a bit of a stretch -that could be why Ken and the lady never encounter each other in episode 32 or 33. It would be really hard to believe that, after the events in episode 31, she wouldn't recognize Dr. Nambu's assistant (in the same "1" t-shirt) or that he wouldn't recognize her -they sat across from each other on a train for awhile and spoke to each other quite a bit.

Gatchamarie, you are too generous. If Ken is going to be an effective leader, he can't be seen as 'keeping secrets' from the Team or 'manipulating' them, and that's how it come s across.

Not to say that a leader shouldn't have secrets, but it shouldn't seem as if they have secrets... I'm not sure I'm making sense here.

LB, you're right... if Ken had run into the mysterious agent, there definitely should have been some recognition. I guess having her hair put up in a bun was enough of a deception for Jun and Jinpei, though! Wink

I too have found it strange that neither the team or Katse could keep the image of the enemy showing up. I mean how many times have the team been in his presence while in civvies and suddenly they show up in bird style.

Also that the team couldn't keep Katse's different showings in their mind... even if they weren't sure it was Katse, still they should think... Hum this crazy female keeps showing up with Galactor...

I loved your sons honest comment about Katse TJ, thanks for sharing it.

Plus as far as the devil stars final thought... I like how it deals with the fact that Joe had overcome being a child of Galactor...

LB, I noticed the differences in Joe's looks too, and it did appear that Ken's facial features were getting mixed in with Joes.

You do make sense TJ. I too would have been frustrated if I were one of the other team members and kept away from secrets which should have been handled as a team. From my point of view, as the other team members saw Joe's behaviour and knew it wasn't quite right, Ken did not want to seem too easy by closing an eye over the situation but he also wanted to reintegrate Joe in the mission as part of their team at the same time, like things should have taken place in the first place. Now here is the boring part! - the fact is that, sometimes, I think being a leader is quite a tough job as every decision or action you take may reflect in various kinds of ways to other persons and, most of the time, others do not share the same opinion especially when something is imposed on them. A leader must keep a balance between his tough side and his soft side which is quite difficult at times! (Is my Eagle side prominent here? ... I may be a bit biased hmm!)

Gatchamarie I am really liking what you are saying here. A leader has to know which secrets to keep and which ones not to and also when it is the right time to let a secret that they know --- be known.

Which also reflects on Nambu's role and him keeping secrets/information from the Ken and the rest of the team.

One also has to remember as a "viewer" we see more of these secrets than the characters in the show do (or are allowed to) and like many other things in the show this is exaggerated more than may occur in RL so those who can not catch subtlety *cloud waves hand* do see it.
