Gatchaman Episode 32 - The Grand Gezora Operation/BOTP Episode 59 - Curse of the Cuttlefish Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator        IP Information Go to the top of this page

Ah, yes, it might seem as if I’m doing an episode out of order. There’s a small blip in the schedule, to have episodes 32 and 33 discussed the same week, since they comprise a 2 part adventure. We’ll get to episode 31 next week, never fear! But in the meantime, sit back and enjoy…

Gatchaman Episode 32 - The Grand Gezora Operation, Part I

An explosion occurs at a Galactor base. Goons fly everywhere.

The Eagle is leaping over a pair of goons.

A hidden bomb counts down on a pipe.

The Eagle fights some more.

Apparently this includes doing a dance on a goon's butt. No, I'm not kidding. Ken danced on the goon's butt.

As if this weren't ignominious enough, the Owl comes along to play leapfrog with the goon.

And the others are apparently just leaping around in circles.

And what is with this rainbow tunnel in the Galactor base? It reminds me of this tack tunnel at Chicago O'Hare that connects terminals...

Okay, this footage was lifted from a different episode. But I can still make fun of it, can’t I? Angel1

Remotely, Katse asks a goon 'what the hell is going on'.

The goon reports that it is the Science Ninja Team, just before...

We get stock footage of the Team in Birdstyle running down a long hallway. But to make up for that, as we see their shadows flash by on the wall, they are in the form of their bird symbols.

Very cool!

Everyone leaps out of the base and onto the God Phoenix, where the dome slowly closes over them.

The God Phoenix rises over the base...

And the base explodes.

Phew! I feel like I've just watched an entire episode in 60 seconds! But I have to say, this certainly was an exciting way to begin an episode!

Needless to say, Katse isn't very pleased by any of this.

"Curses! The Science Ninja Team's foiled us again!" Katse groans.

"Berg Katse!" X cuts off the mutant's inevitable whine. "Do you understand the goals of Galactor?"

"Yes, Sire!" Katse recites like a schoolboy. "Galactor's objective is to conquer and rule over the Earth. World domination!”

"That's correct." X replies. "You were chosen as Lord of Galactor to fulfill that objective. Why do you continue to fail?"

"We're putting all our efforts into that goal, but the Science Ninja Team continues to..."

"You imbecile! No more excuses!" Sosai rants. "The Science Ninja Team can only utilize their powers when they are in Birdstyle! Otherwise they are normal human beings! You must catch them in civilian clothing and defeat them all at once!"

"But no one has ever seen the Science Ninja Team out of Birdstyle and in civilian clothes before!" Katse protests.

"You fool!" X groans. "Your mission is to figure that out! You should be ashamed of yourself!"

X is so disgusted that he just 'signs out'

"I don't think I've ever seen Leader X so angry." Katse says to himself, once Sosai is gone. But Katse thinks back upon Sosai's words, and suddenly comes up with the 'perfect plan'.

The narrator now brings us to Lawn Park City, which was constructed by the ISO, and is devoted to the research of non-polluting energy, and the development of peacetime industries.

This, of course, makes it the perfect place for Galactor to strike.

A large man smoking a cigar is watching television in his large home. The news report is talking about how successful Lawn Park City is in keeping pollution levels down. But to the man's surprise, the broadcast is suddenly interrupted by the image of Berg Katse!

"Sorry to bother you on an 'off' day, Mr. Mayor of Lawn Park City!" Katse laughs. Ah, so this fat slob is the mayor? Yikes! Or is this just Tatsunoko's statement on politicians in general? Wink

"Who the hell are you?" the Mayor demands to know.

And even though most television sets I'm familiar with do not have audio or video transmitters (perhaps in the future, it's different) Katse hears him. He introduces himself as the 'Lord of Galactor'. He goes on to tell the Mayor that Galactor has just completed its 'newest mechanical creation' and that it has 'chosen Lawn Park as our initial target'.

"We'll be annihilating the facilities of the ISO one by one, and let me assure you, when Galactor says we're going to attack, we mean it! The operation commences soon. Until then, Mr. Mayor!" Katse finishes, before fading out.

And since this was clearly too much for the poor Mayor's TV to handle, it explodes.

The Mayor cowers in fear and wonders what he can do.

Of course, the answer is obvious, and clearly that's what Katse was counting on. The Mayor calls the UN, and troops are sent in. They patrol in battleships, submarines and planes, but there is no attack. Days of 'ominous silence' pass...

Dr. Nambu receives intelligence, and the Science Ninja Team gathers at the Crescent Coral Base for a briefing.

"You mean they warned the city that they're going to attack? Those bastards are ridiculous!" huffs Joe. Jinpei is equally indignant.

Ken thinks something isn't right. He points out that the only other time Galactor gave warning, their plan failed.

Ryu wants to know why they would try something again if it failed the first time.

Jun surmises that they've come up with a new plan.

Ken just wishes that he knew what they were planning.

"Are you kidding?" Joe asks angrily. "They're not planning anything! Galactor's just trying to mock us, damn it! Screw them!"

But Nambu agrees with Ken, that Galactor must have something up its sleeve. They know the power of the Science Ninja Team, so they would never underestimate the ISO by using a failed operation. Of course, Nambu doesn't know what this new plan might be, any more than the others. He just tells the Team to 'always be prepared'. What are they, boy scouts?

"As long as the Science Ninja Team is around, Galactor cannot win!" Joe declares. And he raises his finger threateningly.

Wow, that finger is creeping me out... ooh... what do you think he's going to do with it? ROFL 2

So Nambu sends them all off to Lawn Park City.

Roger!

Stock footage again of running down the corridor and the God Phoenix launching from the Crescent Base.

Meanwhile, on a battleship outside of Lawn Park City, two naval officers talk.

"It's quiet out there." one of them says. "Do you really think Galactor's going to show up?"

"It's Galactor; they'll show up eventually." the other replies. "I just wonder what kind of new mecha monster they have."

And of course, the very fact that these guys are having this conversation at all means that they will be the first to find out, won't they? Wink

"I heard the Science Ninja Team's on their way," the first guy says, "but I'd like to get a shot at it before they get here."

Okay, such cockiness must be punished. Clearly Galactor thinks so too, because a bright pink tentacle is approaching the two men from behind.

"We'd be bigger than Gatchaman!" says the second guy, fantasizing as well.

"Yeah, and then kids all over the world would look up to us!" the first guy laughs. Both men find this amusing, and they chuckle.

Suddenly, a massive pink tentacle crashes down, just where they were standing! The boat explodes, and the men go flying.

Yep, didn't expect that at all. Nuh-uh. Angel1

The tentacles (there are more of them now) wrap themselves around the battleship and pull it over, sinking it.

The men inside drown as the water rushes in. Cut from BOTP...

But never fear! UN fighter planes are being sent out to meet this menace! Because they’ve always been so effective against Galactor in the past! Doh2

A monster squid emerges from the water...

Some of the missiles the planes shoot at the squid explode harmlessly, and the others are caught in the tentacles. The tentacles throw the missiles back at the planes and then... yep, the planes are gone.

But more planes are on their way! The squid rises up into the air, and the point on the top of its head begins to rotate. Then the entire head shoots off, and the tentacles as well, leaving only the 'face' behind.

The head and the tentacles are now each attacking as separate units, and the new pilots (who look just like, and speak like, the old pilots) are horrified.

Katse laughs while he watches this from his monitors, and he announces that the name of the mecha is the 'Great Gezora'.

The separated head and tentacles are just as impervious to the UN plane missiles as was the entire mecha. The tentacles attack the planes.

But the tentacles don't attack. They just herd the planes together into one group so the spinning head can come in and obliterate them.

The Science Ninja Team is shocked to see this from the God Phoenix.

"We were so close to getting here in time! Damn them!" Joe says in shock. Gee, there were days of warning... it's not like you guys all rushed over here!

Katse spots the God Phoenix approaching.

"They're walking straight into my trap, little Bird Brains!" he cackles.

The mecha rejoins, and Jun is horrified.

The God Phoenix chases after it, even as it dives under water. Ken orders Ryu to get within shooting range, so they can blast it with a Bird Missile. Wait a minute... this is Ken? Not Joe?

"Right!" Ryu says, before correcting himself. "Roger... sorry..."

"Wow, you're not usually the one with the itchy trigger finger. What's up, Ken?" Joe smirks. And he puts his hand on Ken's shoulder. Yaoi fans, go crazy!

"I just can't let them kill any more innocent citizens of Lawn Park City!" Ken protests, and Joe pats Ken's shoulder.

"That's our leader." Joe grins. "You'd be an even better leader if you were like this all the time!"

"He's right, Big Bro..." Jinpei teases.

"This is no time for goofing around. Man your battle stations immediately!" Ken orders.

"I'll take care of the Bird Missiles for you." Joe offers slyly.

"Then get ready!" Ken mutters grimly. Wow, he really is sounding Condor-like today!

Joe waits, his finger poised over the shiny red button...

"A little closer..." he urges Gezora.

But the giant squid chooses that moment to release a cloud of ink! The God Phoenix is flying blind! Ken orders a full stop, declaring it too dangerous to continue.

The God Phoenix shakes and rumbles in the wake of the Gezora craft!

The Team cries and moans as this shot shakes on camera. In the ADV dub, in the background, you can hear Jinpei's voice moaning, "We really should get seatbelts!" I am pound !!!!

The ink clears, and we see the God Phoenix sitting safely on the ocean floor... but Gezora is nowhere to be found. There is a massive rock in front of the God Phoenix, and it seems that the warship would have crashed into it if they hadn't stopped. The ninjas seem shocked to discover this.

Katse's laughter echoes around the Bridge. It makes Joe so mad, his wings turn dark blue!

"Hello, Kiddies! How'd you like Galactor's new mecha monster?" Katse smirks. Joe is not impressed.

"That was just a trial run." Katse goes on. "Our first real target is Lawn Park City's chemical plant. Hope you come out and play!"

"I hate the sound of his voice!" Joe shouts, after Katse’s image disappears. "It disgusts me!"

"You big coward, you should stay and fight!" yells Jinpei.

But Ken is simply wondering what 'that Galactor scum' is plotting...

After a commercial break, we learn that several days have passed since Galactor's next threatened attack. The Team has had no choice but to blend in with the citizens of the city...

Jinpei wonders where Galactor is hiding, and Jun thinks they've been tricked.

"They probably got smart, realized their plans were toast, and nixed them altogether." Joe says smugly.

"I've been thinking about it," Ryu says, "and what if this is some kind of weird plan to try and lure us out?"

"Maybe you need to stop trying to think so hard." Jinpei says insultingly, but Ken sides with Ryu.

Jun and Jinpei are surprised to hear this.

"Dig it. There's got to be a reason Galactor's keeping us here in Lawn Park. Maybe old Double Stuff figured it out!" Ken explains.

Hmmm... I don't think Ryu appreciates that nickname, Ken, so it takes something away from your support of his idea...

"But why would they do that?" Joe asks.

Cut to a shot of Katse gloating.

He is ordering goons to go out and discover the Science Ninja Team's true identities. He's sure they will have assimilated into Lawn Park City by now. Katse tells the goons to disguise themselves as citizens too.

Goons disguised as civilians. Don't they look like hot swingers? ROFL 2

But the 'hot swingers' are taken aback when they encounter this woman waiting for them...

Whoever could she be? Wink If you don't know, check out the lips...

The woman tells the men that she is in command now, because she is the 'mistress of this mansion'. The men protest at first, but the woman claims to have orders from Lord Katse, and they instantly fall into line. They are goons, after all.

The camera closes in on her face... Hmmm... Katse

The woman orders the men to search the city from top to bottom.

Back at the waterside, Ken is ordering everyone to remove their bracelets, because they are a dead giveaway to Galactor that they are members of the Science Ninja Team.

Jun removes her bracelet.

Jun tells Ken that she'll do this, but she's nervous without her bracelet on.

"Me too!" chimes Jinpei.

"Just bear with me." Ken says. "It's to defeat Galactor."

"Man, if I didn't know better, I'd think that you were being swayed by Galactor, Ken." Joe says.

Ken tells Joe not to be ridiculous. But now Ken thinks that it's too obvious if they're all together, so Ken wants them to separate to investigate.

Ken orders Jun and Jinpei to stick together, but Jun points out that without their bracelets they can't keep in contact. Ken tells everyone to rendezvous at this location at 6 pm.

Later, Jun and Jinpei are searching the city. Jinpei wonders why Galactor is looking for them anyway. Jun shushes him, reminding the Swallow that Galactor could be listening in on everything they say.

A small boy runs by, screaming that 'Galactor is here!' Jun and Jinpei dash to follow, and question the boy.

But the boy admits that he only screamed this message because an old man promised to give him money if he said this.

Jun is shocked.

She looks around fearfully, but doesn't see two of the 'swinging goons' high up in a building, spying on her and Jinpei.

Jinpei doesn't understand what's going on, but Jun senses that Galactor is getting close to them. If only they knew how close...

Suddenly, Jun and Jinpei come across a woman screaming for help. She is being attacked by three men, one of whom pulls a gun and threatens to shoot the woman.

Not thinking twice, Jun jumps in.

Jinpei does too.

The three men run away, but the woman, who is left behind, smiles slyly. Jun asks the woman if she is all right, and the woman replies that she is just a little frazzled.

The woman bends and grabs at her ankle, as if she is in pain. Jun asks if the woman would like to be escorted home, and the woman accepts.

The three of them arrive at the large mansion, and Jinpei is impressed.

The woman invites Jun and Jinpei to tea 'to express her thanks'. Jun tries to politely refuse, but the woman insists, and walks right up the stairs to her house. She shows no sign of her 'injury’, and both Jun and Jinpei notice.

Jinpei thinks this all looks 'too good to be true', but Jun thinks that makes it worthy of investigating.

The woman puts out quite a spread for 'tea'. Look, there's even sushi!

Jinpei exclaims that he's never seen so much food. He's so excited that his pants are bleached white! Or maybe that's just his napkin?

Jinpei proves that he's learned a few things from Ryu.

The woman just laughs at Jinpei's rude stuffing of his face, and then departs to 'change'. Her manservant also departs.

"Sis, I think they must be with Galactor!" Jinpei whispers. "Their eyes are evil-looking!"

Uh, yeah... evil eyes... gotcha, Jinpei. Doh2

Jun decides to monitor these people a little longer, because she agrees that they seem suspicious. But Jinpei points out that it's almost time to meet up with the others. A nearby clock shows that it's five minutes to six. Jun says that there's nothing they can do about the time, and that they're duty-bound to investigate. She tells Jinpei to act like nothing's up. So...

Jinpei starts stuffing his face again.

Meanwhile, everyone is watching them.

The 'swinger goons' don't think 'those kids' are members of the Science Ninja Team. They look like 'street urchins'. The woman points out that their fighting skills made her think that they aren't ordinary children.

Back in the tea room, Jinpei is getting sleepy... he crashes onto the table.

Jun isn't sure how to react, but quickly realizes that whatever knocked out Jinpei was in his tea.

"Wow, Jinpei, I can't believe you're so rude!" she says loudly, picking up her cup. "You're on your own, this time." And she 'drinks' her tea.

Meanwhile, it's quarter after six and the other three guys wonder what happened to Jun and Jinpei.

Ryu suggests that something might have happened, and Joe suggests that maybe they figured something out. Of course, they're both right.

Ryu says that they should go looking for Jun and Jinpei, because they might have been caught by Galactor. So... they all split up. Um, isn't this how Jun and Jinpei got into trouble into he first place?

Jun and Jinpei are apparently both asleep, back in the tea room.

The 'swinger goons' say that Jun and Jinpei are 'normal brats after all'. If they were members of the Science Ninja Team, they'd be cautious. The woman agrees that no matter who they are they could cause trouble later, so she orders them both to be killed.

The lead 'swinger goon' takes a stab at Jun with a knife, but she ducks aside just in time.

She knocks over the goon, sending him flying into Jinpei, who is still asleep.

Jun kicks another goon, who also lands on top of Jinpei (who is now on the floor).

This actually wakes Jinpei up, just in time to see Jun whack another goon with a chair.

Jun crashes the chair over the goon's head, but doesn't see another one coming up behind her.

But she simply flips the guy over her head.

By this time, Jinpei is awake enough to get in on the act.

And the same goons get bashed again.

But just as Jun is trying to extract a confession from one of the men, the woman shows up in the doorway, pointing a gun.

The woman accuses Jun and Jinpei of being on the Science Ninja Team.

Jun laughs.

"It's groovy to be mistaken as a member of the Science Ninja Team." she giggles. "Are we really that righteous?"

Jun says that she is an officer from the Lawn Park City Police, and she openly calls the woman Galactor.

The woman doesn't know if she believes Jun's story (I think it's a pretty good story, given that she had to think it up on the spur of the moment). But the woman decides to 'test' Jun and Jinpei. Our two ninjas aren't happy to hear this.

Somehow, the 'swinger goons' are now easily able to capture Jun and Jinpei, despite being easing pickings a moment before.

We cut to Katse speaking to his troops. He says that everything is proceeding as planned, so he wants Gezora to attack the chemical plants and terrorize the city. He stands in front of Gezora while giving his orders.

Katse walks onto Gezora's Bridge.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are, Gatchaman!" Katse sings, as Gezora leaves the base.

Gezora's head becomes a drill, and it begins burrowing underwater, into some rock.

Meanwhile, Jun and Jinpei are in a cell. Jinpei is screaming to be let out.

"If only I had my Team bracelet!" Jinpei complains.

"It's all because of you, Sis! I told you we shouldn't have given them up!" he whines. Like Jun was going to disobey Ken's orders? Come on now, Jinpei!

Jun refuses to answer. But Jinpei points out that the others could be in trouble.

The dreadful monster begins its reign of terror, and the evil hand of Galactor creeps toward the Science Ninja Team as well! What is the fate of our captured heroes? Is this the end for Jun and Jinpei?

Well, we won't know until Thursday, because this is the end of Part I...

BOTP Episode 59 - Curse of the Cuttlefish, Part I

Although most of Zark's work at Center Neptune consists of keeping a 'routine watch on the universe for any signs of alien invaders', now and then he gets a really exciting assignment. Like today! G-Force is off to outer space on a top secret mission. This time, they're going to 'turn the tables' on Earth's greatest enemy.

Ooh, and who could Earth's greatest enemy be? I'm in suspense!

Zark says that they have learned secretly of an impending enemy attack, so G-Force, with their cerebonic superpowers, and Zark's technical assistance, is going to attempt a raid on Spectra before they can attack Earth! Isn't it brilliant?

We cut to a shot of the Phoenix in space, '9 million miles beyond Mercury, and going faster than the speed of light: 220,000 miles a second'.

Now G-Force is in Time Warp, moving faster than the human mind can calculate. A million miles is only the blink of an eye, and a year is a second.

I'm still not sure why Time Warp doesn't make the G-Force Team go forward through time.

But now, Zark has brought them out of Time Warp, and they have powered through the alien neutron force field. Yeah, the Spectrans won't notice anyone powering through their force field. Nah...

Zark tells us that G-Force's objective is to destroy Spectra's 'key defense base for all of the evil Zoltar's armies.'

We see a few shots of the Team dancing around some goons and a few minor explosions, but no one seems to be getting hurt.

"Okay Team, let's go!" Mark says, but we don't see his lips moving as he leaps about.

"What's all the trouble over there?" Zoltar asks, via monitor.

"G-Force is raiding our secret military base!" a goon reports. There is a flash, but the scene cuts quickly, so we don't know why.

G-Force runs down the hall and out of the base, escaping to the Phoenix. They take off, and the base explodes.

Zoltar slams his hands down in frustration.

"G-Force attacking me on my own planet? What will I tell the Great Spirit?" he moans.

Too late, Zoltar, he heard you!

Zoltar quickly calls this a 'slight problem', but the Luminous One hardly calls the loss of their ‘most strategic base' a 'slight problem'. The Great Spirit declares that G-Force must be eliminated, as they have foiled all of Zoltar's efforts to conquer Earth. And he has a new plan...

The Luminous One orders Zoltar to attack Arcturus. The secret Conway Tapes, containing the defense codes for Earth and the Federation, are hidden there. If Zoltar captures the tapes and defeats G-Force, the Spectra will at last conquer Earth and the Federation.

The Great Spirit tells Zoltar to take care of this personally, because there should be no failure.

Coincidentally, Zark shows us pictures of the main city on Arcturus, which is Earth's 'sister planet', because conditions on it are so similar. Arcturus was settled by Earth pioneers two centuries ago. It is light years from Earth, but with Time Warp engines, commerce between the two planets is a matter of daily routine.

A man watches TV, where a news reporter is talking about the wonderful commerce between Earth and Arcturus. But an image of Zoltar breaks in, and Zoltar declares that Spectra will invade Arcturus. They have twenty-four hours. All in all, it's a 'news break from your friendly Spectra space station'. Groan.

Zark's voiceover tells us that all forces on Arcturus are on red alert. But it's puzzling that Zoltar announced that he was going to attack. There is the 'frightening chance' that Zoltar knows the Conway Tapes are being stored on Arcturus! Zark only hopes that the 'robot controlled Arcturian Air Force' can ward off whatever Spectra throws at them.

What... Zark isn't going to evacuate the entire planet?

Back at Center Neptune, Chief Anderson tells the G-Force Team that this may just be a false alarm. Jason also suspects that Zoltar knows about the Conway Tapes being on Arcturus. Jason's angry that they didn't just keep those tapes at Center Neptune. Anderson agrees with Jason. But he still doesn't understand why Zoltar told them in advance that he would attack. The Chief concludes that it may be a trap. But even so, the Conway Tapes must not fall into Zoltar's hands. Anderson orders the Team to go to Arcturus incognito.

Insert stock footage of the Team running down the hallway, boarding the Pheonix, and leaving Center Neptune. And now we see Earth fading in the distance. Zark is amazed that after going to Spectra and back, G-Force is headed out to deep space again. Zark doesn't know how the G-Force Team can even tell where they are, half the time.

While they're traveling (so much for being there in a second via Time Warp) Zark monitors the 'remote-controlled' military forces of Arcturus. A giant squid emerges from the water, and quickly destroys a number of planes.

Zoltar laughs as he watches.

"Fools!" he announces, even though the 'enemy' can't hear him. "Your remote-controlled forces are of little use against my cuttlefish space ship, and my new weapons!"

Okay, I'm curious. This thing clearly looks like a squid to me, which is what it was in Gatchaman. I've never heard of a cuttlefish. Let's Google...

Ooh! Here are real cuttlefish.

It really does look like the mecha! Okay, I'll go with this.

After we see all of the ‘remote-controlled' planes being destroyed, Zark announces that the Phoenix has arrived on Arcturus. Zark knows that he can do better than those robot planes. Mark immediately orders Tiny to bring the Phoenix in for a look. The Cuttlefish runs away, and Mark orders Tiny to chase it.

"We've got them dead to rights, Mark." Jason says, his hand on Mark's shoulder. "One blast from a TBX Missile..."

"Zoltar must have an underwater base somewhere." Mark thinks out loud. "He always does."

"He won't get away with it!" Jason says as he pats Mark's shoulder. "All I need is one clear shot. I won't miss."

Mark orders Princess and Keyop to arm the TBX Missiles.

"I hope we have enough firepower." Jason comments. Um, a little late for that thought, Jason.

But just as Jason is about to shoot, the Cuttlefish sends out a cloud of ink! Mark orders Tiny to cut full power, but keep moving forward,

The ship shakes, but Keyop isn't yelling out for seatbelts.

When the ink clears, the Phoenix is stopped in front of a massive rock.

"That's cutting it mighty close, Tiny!" Mark comments.

But no one knows where the Cuttlefish went. Still, Zoltar's laugh fills the Bridge.

"We've been duped." mutters Jason, with dark-colored wings.

"You look confused, G-Force!" Zoltar says, appearing on the Phoenix's monitor. Yet again, I wonder if Zoltar can just see and hear inside the Phoenix whenever he wants.

"You might even say, you've run up against a blank wall!" Zoltar taunts them. Ouch...

"While you sit there on the bottom of the Arcturian Sea, I will begin destroying the cities of your sister planet, one by one!" Zoltar threatens. "Your turn will come soon, G-Force!"

Jason and Keyop are mad, but Mark is thinking ahead. If Zoltar is really after the Conway Tapes, every planet in the Federation will be in jeopardy!

As always, we have a commercial break, from which we return to find Zark pacing in his Ready Room.

He's stressed. These pressurized situations really put a strain on his components. Zoltar said he'd invade Arcuturus, and for once he kept his word. Zark's got to keep his eye on things every second!

The G-Force Team is in civilian clothes, waiting around on Arcturus. Princess says it's too quiet, and Jason points out that it isn't like Zoltar to go into hiding after bragging about what he was going to do. Mark agrees, and says that they can't just sit around there, waiting.

Princess offers to 'snoop around' with Keyop. Mark thinks it's a good idea, and Jason thinks it might work.

Meanwhile, Zoltar is speaking to his troops. He wants every man battle ready. His Agent S-9 will contact the local spies to look for the Conway Tapes. Agent S-9 is the 'most brilliant planetary spy in their galaxy'. The agent is resourceful, cunning, and utterly cold-blooded!

Spectran swinger spies arrive to find Agent S-9. She says that she will be giving them orders now. She sounds like a Russian Military Commander. It's clearly Janet Waldo speaking, but for once not in a Princess-type voice.

The Spectra spies (all male) don't want to take orders from a woman. I guess Spectra is a pretty sexist planet.

"I have no time to argue with you! Those are Zoltar's orders!" Agent S-9 tells them. "You all know the consequences if you disobey!"

The agents agree to obey, but they appear shocked to hear that Zoltar wants them to recover the Conway Tapes. I guess they weren't paying attention during Zoltar's briefing...

Meanwhile, Mark is telling Keyop to pretend that Princess is his sister. Keyop's not so sure.

"Yeah, I know that's hard to imagine, Keyop." Mark tries to be convincing. "You'll have to do a real big acting job."

"Are you sure you want us to leave these with you?" Princess asks, taking off her communicator. "What if we should run into trouble?"

"Yell." Keyop replies. "Loud."

"They'd be dead giveaways to Spectra." Mark points out.

Mark orders Tiny to 'stand by the Phoenix'. He says that he will search the waterfront with Jason. And everyone has to rendezvous back there by sundown.

Out on the streets of Arcturus, Princess thinks she hears someone in trouble. Sure enough, a small boy comes running along, crying for help. Princess and Keyop ask the boy what's wrong.

The boy says that men are hurting a woman 'back there'. One of the men gave the boy some money and told him to 'get lost'. Very considerate muggers/rapists they have on Arcturus, don't they? Wink

Princess and Keyop go investigate, and quickly realize that the boy has slipped off. But they find the men 'hurting the woman'. There is no sign or threat of a gun. Princess' fight scene is cut to a shadow image of her kneeing a guy in the groin (Quite violent for BOTP!), and all Keyop does is grab someone's legs.

Agent S-9 says that she is not hurt, but then grabs her ankle in pain. Princess offers to call for an ambulance, but S-9 only wants to be taken home.

Once they arrive at her home, S-9 invites Princess and Keyop for dinner. Princess tries to politely refuse, but the woman insists. But Princess notices that the woman isn't hurt as she walks up the stairs.

S-9 is amused by Keyop's eagerness to stuff all of the food in his mouth. She leaves for a moment because she has 'something to attend to'. Her manservant leaves, saying that he will get them something to drink. Gee, he sounds just like Chief Anderson! I wonder if the Chief is here in disguise... Wink

Keyop burbles incomprehensibly in Princess' ear.

"Yeah, I know she's up to something. Stay on your toes!" Princess replies. This reminds me a lot of those scenes in Star Wars where R2-D2 beeps and C3-P0 apparently understood him, and answered in English.

Keyop notes that it's getting late and it's time to go. Princess tells him not to act suspicious, because they may be watching on hidden monitors. The first chance they get, they'll slip out and return to the rest of the Team.

So Keyop digs into the food again.

The Spectran Spies are watching with Agent S-9 on the cameras, and the spies don't think the two kids could be part of G-Force. But S-9 is positive.

"Watch that little fellow; he's tricky!" she says. She orders the Spectrans to 'tie them up' as soon as the drug in their drinks takes effect.

Keyop falls asleep. Princess sees the cup in front of her, and she gets suspicious.

"I'll just finish my hot chocolate, and then I'll take you home!" she says loudly, before 'drinking' from her cup.

Mark, Jason and Tiny are worried about Keyop and Princess, since they haven't shown up at the rendezvous. Tiny says he saw them 'over by the old museum'. Jason declares that 'he knew he should have gone with them'. Um, I never heard you say that, Jason.

In any case, Jason thinks the three of them should spread out and start searching.

"I know, I know." Tiny yawns. "Back to the Phoenix. You'll call me if you need me."

Princess and Keyop are now 'asleep' at the table. The Spectran spies come into the room...

And Princess throws a bowl of fruit at them. No knife, no kicking. But Princess does trip one guy, and he lands on Keyop. Then another one does too, although we don't know why. Keyop wakes up.

We actually get to see Princess throw the guy that has her in a chokehold, but she doesn't get to return the favor before S-9 is suddenly in the doorway, pointing a gun.

"Wait until I tell Zoltar how easily you fell into my trap, G-Force!" she laughs. "We've had you all under surveillance since you got here. And you'll be my bait to catch the rest of G-Force."

Princess doesn’t respond.

Cut to Zoltar, who says that it is time to deliver the first 'mighty blow' to Arcturus. They have divided G-Force, and now they shall capture the Conway Tapes and conquer the entire galaxy!

"On to victory, wealth, and power, and death to Earth and the Intergalactic Federation!" is Zoltar's rallying cry.

Zoltar launches the Cuttlefish, which begins to drill into some underwater rock.

We see Keyop and Princess in a cell, but Zark is voicing over, telling us that he has no sign of Keyop and Princess. I guess he wasn't keeping a very good eye on things, now was he?

Zark hopes that Keyop and Princess aren't in trouble.

"No radio!" exclaims Keyop, looking at his bare wrist.

Zark comes back on the voiceover, reminding us that without their wrist communicators, Keyop and Princess are unable to contact the rest of G-Force. And with G-Force split up, it will be much easier for Zoltar to steal the Conway Tapes.

Back at Center Neptune, 1-Rover-1 barks. Zark tells him that G-Force isn't coming home 'just yet'. Mark, Jason and Tiny have to stay on Arcturus until they can find Princess and Keyop.

Zoltar's giant cuttlefish has vanished, and Zark has lot all trace of it. I guess he's really slacking on the job today!

"We know Spectra is going to try and get the Conway Tapes, but when? And how?" Zark wonders.

Rover falls down in disgust.

Zark tells us not to worry. Mark is a 'brave and daring Commander', and Zark is sure Mark will find some way to stop Zoltar and get the Team back together again. Zark will keep his eyes glued to his monitor screen until he does.

"And you'll know how well he does, just as soon as I do!" Zark breaks the fourth wall as the episode fades out.

This is one of my fav eps... and you did such a great job with it! And my favorite part? Why, the Eagle "butt shot", of course!

Let's see that again...

And I love the new title for the goons..."Swinger Goons" fits so well!

A great recap -and thanks for making that animation of Ken's "butt-dancing" technique -it has to be seen to be believed!

I guess this is not only the first "to be continued" episode, but it's also the first one where Galactor makes an effort to learn the civilian identities of the Team, which becomes a recurring theme. I can see why Ken would think they should take their bracelets off, as that's the one thing that connects their birdstyle and their civilian appearances, but I've always wondered why Ken just didn't tell them to keep their bracelets in their pockets (except, that would have messed with the plot! Wink1 )

And speaking of identities, this episode would mark the third time that the "Galactor Female Commander" has made an appearance (as she was in ep 29 and 31) but neither Jun or Jinpei recognize her here. Granted, she has a different hairstyle and clothes, and is in a different setting. I wonder if viewers in 1973 realized or at least suspected that this was the same woman each time, even if no one on the Team was making the connection yet.

I've already written up the episode for next week (31) and the faces are basically identical... I think next week we can do a 'female commander montage' and see just how similar they all look.

I'm looking forward to seeing your continuation of this on Thursday, LB! Well, I'll be at Comic Con, so I won't see it until Sunday, but I'm curious to see it! How will Jun and Jinpei ever get out of this mess? Big Grin

I agree, Galactor is making a serious effort in this episode to discover their civilian identities. But remember, that's under the presumption that they're not as effective in civvies... that they're 'normal' people out of Birdstyle. While they don't have body protection, and can't fly, I'm not sure what else they're lacking out of Birdstyle. Heck, Secret of the Birdstyles demonstrated that even their civvies uniforms offer a lot of protection.

Jun also clearly demonstrated that they don't lose their 'fighting abilities' out of Birdstyle. Although she and Jinpei seemed especially cowed by the guns... perhaps Civvies Birdstyle doesnt protect as well against bullets?

And we've seen many episodes that demonstrate that the Team carry their weapons in their pockets, even in civvies. Honestly, I'm not sure why Jun and Jinpei can't just get out of the cell. Heck, Jun could do a few yo-yo strikes... Ah well, plot considerations, I guess.

Great Job, TJ!

I think this episode, more than any other, also shows how young the team is. From Ken's decision to have them hand over the bracelets (a decision that is not repeated, they are either covered or carried descreetly in future episodes) to Jun and Jinpie's reaction to the "swinger" goons and the attack (they react like the are on duty rather than infiltrating and observing). They are bit at a point where they can differentiate their roles, but I do think that this is a growing and learning point for the team as they don't tend to repeat these mistakes again (they find new ones).

You make a really good point, Amethyst. They are just kids after all, even if we tend to think of them (except maybe Jinpei) as being older/more mature. They make mistakes, just like Galactor did, and you're right that they learned and didn't repeat those mistakes in future eps.

Great Review TJ and I too especially loved the Eagle butt shot. I mean what could be better than seeing the Eagle's butt in the very first shot of the ep. Except maybe seeing the Condor's butt....

True -didn't Jun's shoe survive an incinerator unscathed in that episode? That gets me wondering... I'd like to think that that level of durability might also mean their civvies have some resistance to bullets or other extreme forms of damage but I don't recall as much evidence of that (and Joe's civvies shirt didn't protect him so well in the final few episodes), whereas I think in the "Secret" episode Jun shields herself from a hail of goons' gunfire with her wings (once she'd gotten her shoe back!) and their birdstyles sure seem to protect them from heat/explosions/gunfire in plenty of episodes. I agree, though, that they are still armed and dangerous and far from "normal" in their civilian modes! Even if Galactor wants to learn their identities because it mistakenly thinks that they'd be easy prey in civilian mode, I guess it would still be a big blow to Ken, Joe, Jun, Jinpei and Ryu if Galactor learned their names and exactly what they looked like out of their birdstyles as they would have to be constantly vigilant, give up their civilian lives and pretty much live at the Crescent Coral Base all the time, or wear disguises all the time and keep moving around.

I agree that Jun did a pretty good job thinking fast on her feet when she claimed to be a police officer to explain her fighting skills, though it sure seemed like the female commander was still too suspicious to have ever considered just letting them go. Especially after her and Jinpei's assault on the Swinger Goons!

Could it be that they had to be cautious about what weapons to use and how extensive their fighting ability was as they were probably being observed? (I like to think about it that way!) I think that at times like these, that is when the team members were made captive in their civvies, hard decisions had to be made as it was crucial for them to keep their identities secret at all times although it could have been of a detriment for them not to be protected in Birdstyle. Jinpei was surely furious regarding his missing bracelet though! Wonder if Ken's lovely butt would have then made a good target for Jinpei to unleash his fury on!

I also think that it is a good thing that their youth aspect was shown in the series. Impulsive and, sometimes, stupid reactions tend to lead to more adventurous stories! These are also good lessons for the future which the team have surely learned from their experiences. I liked to see them mature throughout the series and even the change in their characters was interesting as war took its toll on them.

TJ thanks again for your work and I don't think I thanked LB and Saturn for theirs in their last episode! I have loads of work and time is short when you have to keep up with work and family ... moreover I'm not feeling that fine nowadays! Must take a break!

It definitely seems to be a fine line to walk... the danger of allowing themselves to remain captured versdus using their weapons? And they weren't so cautious in later episodes. I'm thinking in particular of an episode where Jinpei and Ryu are captured in civvies by Galactor, then they break out and run around the base impersonating 2 goons. Hmmm...

Of course, if Galactor is too dumb to figure out that they capture two guys in number 4 and 5 shirts, and then G4 and G5 show up when they escape... and that wasn't the only episode where something like that happened. Wink
