I was much more moved by Katharine's Defiance. Her graphic descriptions filled in everything the show was missing in those epsiodes.

I figured the goons pretty much shot around him (when he was against the wall). Besides the condition killing him, he was probably pounded by the goons when they caught him.

thank you Marie. I have watched the episode with japanese dialogue a few times, and althouth the actions and expressions can give an idea of what's going on, it's not the same when you don't understand what exactly is being said.
IMO for the sake of fanfic writers everywhere, they all survive to live happily ever after!!!

In episode 104, the expression on Joe's face was enough for me, and I could imagine the rest -the blood, the shredded flesh etc....
While I like realism, that's one scene where part of me is glad they couldn't/wouldn't show the real physical damage. As it is, the first time I saw ep. 104 I was rather -it still gets to me.
IKWYM, I cried buckets the first time I watched ep 105, when I realised they dared kill off my best character!

Having oly seen BotP until I found Wendy Dismore's site in 2001, I had no idea there was a Gatchaman. Once I learned more about that and found out Joe 'died' at the end, I was never so happy they didn't use those episodes in BotP. I'm more enamored of Jason and had had over twenty years to fantatsize about him. I would have cried for him but could watch the Gatchman episodes without being as attached to Joe.

When I first watched the Gatchaman series, my kids (ages 3 and 5 at the time) watched with me. I knew they'd be devastated to see Joe die, so the moment episode 105 was over I had to take them to Boeke's screenshot site and show them the shots from Gatchaman II episode 4, to show them that Joe didn't really die! It was very upsetting for them, even so....
A few years later, I got the Eagle Riders series, and they were able to watch those episodes where Joe comes back. They were so excited, bounding up and down on the couch, chanting, "Joe! Joe! Joe!" Too funny! But it was clear they were relieved to see him in action again.

All I had to go by was the thumbnails I found about Gatch II and Wendy's Out of the Shadows to verify Joe survived until I was able to get copies of Eagle Riders.
